From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting – Saturday 3 June 2017 – Race 7 1800m Class 2

Stewards interviewed M. Wilson the trainer of SIOSTRA regarding the riding instructions issued.  Mr Wilson explained that at the filly’s previous start due to circumstances the filly settled more forward than anticipated.  He further added that from the wide barrier his instructions were that if the filly began on terms with the remainder of the field it would settle towards the rear of the field.  Stewards reminded Mr Wilson of his obligation to notify stewards should the instructions change in future.

RACE 1: Clipsal And Schneider Partner Business Maiden Plate – 2200m

KING OF MONACO – Trainer M. Leitch advised the horse would be ridden further back in the field today if  circumstances permitted.  The horse was ridden accordingly.

WHAT DO YA THINK – Trainer L. Garrett advised the horse would be ridden forward today if circumstances permitted.  Began awkwardly and initially settled in a midfield position. Steadied from the heels of KUTTAMURRA AL, which shifted in passing the winning post on the first occasion. Then shifted wider on the track and improved forward to a position outsider the leader near the 1200m.

SURFERS DOLPHINS – Began awkwardly.

KUTTAMURRA AL – Shifted in under pressure in the home straight.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Good 3 retrospective.

RACE 2: Interrisk QTIS 3YO Maiden Plate – 1800m

LUCY LE ROC – Began awkwardly.  Disappointed for a run upon straightening and was held up for the remainder of the home straight.

SAFE HARBOUR – Overraced in the early stages.

AUSTRALIAN PHAROAH – Raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages.  Shifted in under pressure upon straightening.

STRIKER THOMAS – Raced wide throughout.

WINDMILL FOLLIES – Jockey G. Colless reported that it was not his intention to lead today however, after beginning well from the wide barrier and with no early speed drawn inside of him he elected to stride forward to the lead.

RACE 3: Gerard Lighting Maiden H’Cap – 1400m

The start was delayed when a barrier attendant was kicked by a horse and required the assistance of a QAS officer.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by B. Stewart the rider of BRANDO which finished third against FRENCH DESCENT (App J. Guthmann-Chester) being declared second on the grounds of alleged interference near the 400m.  After considering the evidence it was established that FRENCH DESCENT shifted out rounding the home turn causing BRANDO to be steadied and lose ground at that point.  Given the head margin and the way in which BRANDO was able to finish the race off stewards were satisfied that the interference did have a material affect on the placings and therefore upheld the objection and amended the placings to read:-

1st        Irish Vice
2nd      Brando
3rd       French Descent
4th        Vouch For Me

At a subsequent inquiry App J. Guthmann-Chester the rider of FRENCH DESCENT was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that rounding the home turn he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of BRANDO (B. Stewart) and as a consequence jockey Stewart had to take hold of his mount when tightened for room between BRANDO and SIR PLUCKA.  App Guthmann-Chester’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of ten (10) days to commence midnight 16 June 2017 and expire midnight 26 June 2017.

A TISKET A TASKET – Began awkwardly.

NO MORE HEIGHTS – Hampered at the start.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg.  Veterinary certificate required.

SIR PLUCKA – Overraced in the early stages and as a consequence raced 3 wide without cover throughout.  Hampered upon straightening.

BRANDO – Near the 400m had to be steadied when tightened for room between SIR PLUCKA and FRENCH DESCENT, which shifted out.

IRISH VICE – Momentarily held up leaving the 300m before shifting out to secure clear running.  Bumped near the 200m.

BOINGO – Bumped near the 200m.

RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARIN – Raced wide throughout.

BRICKHALL – When questioned as to the tactics and overall performance jockey R. Fradd stated that from the wide barrier he was obliged to restrain to settle at the rear of the field.  Jockey Fradd added that leaving the 1000m he was obliged to pressure the gelding to remain in contact with the field and rounding the home turn he was reluctant to shift wider, as he did not believe the gelding was travelling well enough at that point.  Upon straightening he was obliged to steady away from the heels of IRISH VICE when that runner shifted out and again leaving the 200m was obliged to steady from the heels of BRANDO and shift back to the inside of that runner to secure clear running over the concluding stages where the gelding finished the race off well.

RACE 4: Haymans Open H’Cap – 1400m

ESSAY RAIDER – Slow to begin.

MR EPIC – Slow to begin.

EL CAMPEADOR – Slow to begin.  When questioned regarding the performance jockey J. Byrne stated that the gelding failed to sprint quickly when asked to improve to the inside of runners rounding the home turn and in his opinion is better suited when afforded clear running to the outside of the field.  Trainer T. Gollan was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the performance and undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that may come to light in the days subsequent to the race.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

CHARGE MISSILE – Held up in the early stages of the home straight.

After returning to scale in excess of the permitted ½ kilo jockey L. Cassidy (MORE OF THE ZAIM) was reprimanded for changing the girth without notifying the stewards.

RACE 5: NHP Class 5 H’Cap – 1100m

PRONTEZZA – Reared as the start was effected and lost ground.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare had suffered a bleeding attack during the event.  Trainer T. Edmonds indicated the mare will now be retired from racing.

HIGH COST – Bumped at the start.  Checked and lost ground when tightened for room near the 1000m.  At a subsequent inquiry stewards were of the view that POWERFUL SAGA shifted in and away from DESTIVA despite the efforts of jockey D. Griffin (POWERFUL SAGA), which resulted in the tightening of HIGH COST.  As stewards did not believe that any one rider was careless no action was taken.  Raced wide without cover throughout.

SIR DONALD – Bumped at the start.

STAROCITY – Slow to begin.  Raced wide throughout.

MAJELLA MAGIC – Bumped near the 1000m.

LIVE FAST – Disappointed for a run upon straightening and was held up in the early stages of the home straight.  Had to be steadied when placed in restricted room near the 900m.

POWERFUL SAGA – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to its off hind leg consistent with being galloped on.

RACE 6: L&H Auslec Class 3 H’Cap – 1200m

LYRICIST – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

NILETTE – Trainer R. Heathcote reported he now intends to send the mare for a spell as it does not appreciate firm tracks.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 7: Energy Super Class 4 H’Cap – 1400m

Stewards considered an objection lodged by L. Dittman the rider of BAROQUE GIRL which finished second against LOTHARIO (P. Hammersley) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference near the 150m.  On the evidence it was established that whilst LOTHARIO did shift out leaving the 200m BAROQUE GIRL had failed to attain a run to its outside at that point.  Stewards therefore could not be satisfied that BAROQUE GIRL had suffered any interference attributable to LOTHARIO and subsequently dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored.

WHO’S YOUR DADDY – Stood flatfooted as the start was effected.

BENFICA PRINCESS – Slow to begin.

MARAU DAZE – Bumped at the start.

CHOICE PRINCESS – Bumped at the start.

RACE 8: NECA Electrical Apprenticeships Class 6 Plate – 1200m
