SUPPLEMENTARY

From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting 1/7/2017 – Race 3

Trainer B. Currie reported that BATTEN had pulled up following its disappointing performance with no abnormalities.  Mr Currie added he was at a loss to explain the performance and advised he would continue with the horse’s current preparation.

RACE 1: Sky Racing QTIS 3YO Fillies Maiden Plate – 1100m

FIERY DUCHESS – Slow to begin.

POET’S EDITION – Hampered soon after the start when bumped by MISHANI SEEKA.

INSTANTANEOUS – Near the 700m when overracing had to be restrained from the heels of MILLJET.

MULTICHOICE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.  When asked to explain the disappointing performance jockey M. Hellyer explained that when racing wide he was under heavy pressure from the 600m and the filly failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing.  Jockey Hellyer added that MULTICHOICE was making an abnormal respiratory noise after passing the winning post. The stable representative advised that he was also disappointed with today’s performance and advised the filly’s immediate racing campaign will be reviewed.   A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.

SWIPE RIGHT – Raced wide without cover throughout.

RACE 2: Sky Racing Colts, Geldings & Entires Maiden H’Cap – 1400m

KIRIN’S LAD – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped WHISKEY APPLE.

WHISKEY APPLE – Bumped at the start.

STAR STRUCKED – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

SIDETRIP – Jockey M. Hellyer reported at scale that his mount was inclined to hang out for a major part of the race.

DREAM MASTER – Jockey J. Lloyd reported that his mount raced very greenly and soon after straightening shifted out under pressure before being corrected.  Again inclined to shift out under pressure over the final 150m.

MEHMETO – When questioned as to the seemingly improved performance from its most previous start stable representative Mr O’Leary stated that the gelding had been pressured when leading throughout the event at its last start and as a consequence compounded badly on that occasion.  Mr O’Leary noted that the gelding was ridden to obtain a forward position today but was unable to muster sufficient speed and settled in a midfield position with cover.

RACE 3: Sky Racing Fillies & Mares Maiden H’Cap – 1400m

LUCY LE ROC – Slow to begin.

VILLA CORTONA – Slow to begin.

DYLANA – Overraced in the early stages.  Jockey B. Grylls reported at scale she was of the view that her mount had choked down during the race. Trainer D. Joice confirmed that DYLANA had returned to the enclosure with evidence that it had choked down during the race and he now intends to apply a tongue tie and step the horse up in distance in future starts.

ON A HIGH – In the early part of the home straight was inclined to lay in away from KASCATA and as a result made heavy contact with FAST SUN.

RACE 4: Sky Racing Class 2 H’Cap – 900m

REAL CUTE – Slow to begin.

POSITIVE QUEST – Slow to begin.

APOLLO HOPE – Inconvenienced at the start.

STRIVE TO SUCCEED – Inclined to hang out rounding the home turn.  Approaching the 100m App M. McGillivray dropped his whip.
MAGIC DIAMOND – When asked to explain the performance jockey J. Lloyd stated that he did not ride the horse aggressively from the barriers as it has had a tendency to overrace in the past and as a result settled towards the rear of the field.  Jockey Lloyd added that his mount did not feel entirely comfortable when placed under pressure in the home straight.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.

RACE 5: Sky Racing Class 5 H’Cap – 1400m

SAY YOU LOVE ME – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the performance jockey R. Fradd could offer no tangible explanation other than the mare was making a slight abnormal respiratory noise on pulling up. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the off fore leg. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to the mare racing again.

BIANTIC – Held up in the early part of the home straight.

BUDGET BENDER – When questioned regarding the performance App J. Guthmann-Chester stated that to comply with his instructions he was obliged to work hard in the early stages and then when entering the home straight  the gelding was reluctant to stretch out when placed under pressure and proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering from mild heat stress.

RACE 6: Sky Racing BenchMark 70 H’Cap – 1800m

As G. Colless was indisposed due to illness stewards permitted M. Cahill to be replaced as the rider of WIMPOLE STREET.

SIDERO STAR – Slow to begin.

MANNY – Raced wide from the 800m onwards.

SKYTASTIC – Passing the 200m was obliged to alter course to secure clear running.

JACK STRIKES BACK – App J. Murphy reported that his saddle slipped forward shortly after the start placing him at a disadvantage.  As a consequence the gelding raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

RACE 7: Sky Racing Class 1 H’Cap – 1400m

RELAXED – Slow to begin.  Approaching and rounding the home turn was unable to secure clear running and near the 300m was held up when disappointed for a run to the outside of HANOVER SQUARE and was obliged to shift back to the inside by RIVER FIRE to secure clear running.

JEXERLENT – Bumped on 2 occasions soon after the start.

SAVWELL - Bumped on 2 occasions soon after the start.  Forced wider passing the 1000m.  Then raced wide without cover for the remainder. Forced wider passing the 500m. When questioned regarding the performance jockey D. Griffin stated that after being unable to obtain cover he was obliged to race wide throughout and after being inconvenienced by another runner approaching the 1000m he then continued to race wide for the remainder, which he believed had an affect on the gelding’s performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities and a routine swab sample was taken.

TRUE STEPPER – When the pace steadied passing the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of JEXERLENT.

MOBILE – Passing the 1000m hung out despite the efforts of its rider.

HANOVER SQUARE – Contacted heavily passing the 1000m and forced wider.  Bumped approaching the 500m by RIVER FIRE, which shifted out to improve.  Again bumped by RIVER FIRE upon straightening.  Raced wide without cover throughout.  Jockey J. Lloyd will be interviewed regarding the performance of HANOVER SQUARE.

PRIEST’S ROAD – When caught wide early was ridden forward to obtain a position one off the fence.

HYSHEM – Inconvenienced by RELAXED, which shifted in near the 200m.

RACE 8: Sky Racing Class 3 Plate – 1300m

MORE PATASI – Approaching the 1000m improved quickly onto the heels of WHYNOTROC, which shifted in slightly and had to be restrained.

BEARSKIN – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding was exhibiting a cough.  The stable was advised that a veterinary clearance together with the results of an endoscopic examination would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

PLUCKY GIRL – Stewards questioned jockey J. Lloyd regarding the riding tactics adopted on PLUCKY GIRL, in particular the reason for him restraining his mount passing the 1000m and losing ground on the leader and eventual winner JACKPOT.  Jockey Lloyd explained that he was instructed to ride PLUCKY GIRL in a forward position and attempt to obtain the lead if possible and dictate the tempo of the race.  Jockey Lloyd added approaching the 1000m it became evident that he would have had to do too much work to cross JACKPOT and when PLUCKY GIRL was overracing he attempted to restrain the filly to get it to settle.  Jockey Lloyd further added that approaching the 800m WHYNOTROC, which was racing fiercely to his inside, shifted out around the heels of JACKPOT, which resulted in him being forced into a 3 wide position.  Following this, rather than race 3 wide he took hold of PLUCKY GIRL to obtain cover behind WHYNOTROC, which enabled PLUCKY GIRL to race more tractably.  Jockey Lloyd added that he improved behind JACKPOT rounding the home turn and PLUCKY GIRL did not take any ground off that horse over the final 200m.  Stableforeman Mr Trent Edmonds confirmed the instructions and added that he was mindful that today’s pattern of racing has not suited on pace runners and if jockey Lloyd was unable to dictate the tempo of the race on his terms then to obtain cover if circumstances permitted.  Mr Edmonds, after viewing the patrol footage, was satisfied with jockey Lloyd’s explanation.  Stewards advised jockey Lloyd in their opinion he had erred in not maintaining a position at the girth of JACKPOT, which would have prevented WHYNOTROC from improving to his inside and dictating him outwards to a 3 wide position.  Stewards could not be satisfied his actions had had a material affect on the finishing position of PLUCKY GIRL, given the way it finished the race off comparative to the winning JACKPOT. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
