From Doomben Meeting 19 May 2018 – Race 4

Co-trainer P. Snowden advised stewards that EAWASE has now been sent for a spell following its win and will take no further part in the winter carnival.

GENERAL

As both R. Wiggins and D. Griffin were indisposed due to injury stewards permitted rider changes as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

RACE 1: Pink Ribbon Cup 22 September Maiden Plate – 1400m

CINCINNATI RED – Co-trainer L. Corstens advised the filly would be ridden back from the wide barrier if circumstances permitted. Upon return to scale App J. Murphy reported that the filly overraced with the blinkers on and despite his efforts was unable to be restrained to obtain cover at the rear of the field from the wide barrier and therefore when caught wide in the early stages he allowed it to stride forward to eventually settle outside the leader. Co-trainer L. Corstens advised that the blinkers would be removed before the fillys next start.

HAKWA – Connections advised the filly would be ridden more forward if circumstances permitted. Slow to begin and was obliged to settle at the rear of the field. Raced wide throughout.

WU LONG SHI – Slow to begin. Approaching the 1100m was steadied from heels.

BOUND TO ME – Began awkwardly.

HEZ EKCEPTIONAL – Bumped at the start.

OUR RED JET – Hampered at the start. Overraced in the middle stages. Near the 900m shifted out and bumped STRADA GRANDE and was then forced to race wide for the remainder of the event. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had bled from both nostrils and was suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer M. Dunn was advised that the gelding will incur a mandatory three month ban from racing and must compete in a 1000m gallop before racing again. Mr Dunn was also advised that the results of an ECG must be provided.

STRADA GRANDE – Overraced in the early stages. Near the 1200m was checked and blundered after being tightened for room between OUR RED JET and DITZY DARCI, which was taken in by LACEY LYNX PACK. Raced wide throughout.

DITZY DARCI – Raced wide without cover throughout.

App C. Gallagher (LACEY LYNX PACK) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that passing the 1200m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of DITZY DARCI, which was taken in onto STRADA GRANDE, which had to be checked as a consequence and blundered thereafter when tightened for room by DITZY DARCI and OUR RED JET, which was racing back to the inside. App Gallaghers licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight (8) days to commence midnight 27 May 2018 and expire midnight 4 June 2018.

RACE 2: Untold Rum QTIS 3YO Handicap – 1800m

CRUZE – Kicked out with its near hind leg as the start was effected and was slow to begin. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages jockey R. Stewart stated that the gelding overraced in the early stages and as a consequence he allowed the gelding to improve so as to make CAPTIVATOR, which was racing wide in the early stages work harder in an effort to cross forward to the fence. After CAPTIVATOR obtained the lead near the 1200m MADISON POINT elected to shift out to a one wide position. As a consequence jockey Stewart elected to ride forward in an effort to hold MADISON POINT on the fence but was unable to do so, then allowed the gelding to stride further forward to eventually obtain a position outside of CAPTIVATOR near the 900m. Jockey Stewart expressed his disappointment in the geldings overall performance and with the benefit of hindsight conceded the gelding may be better suited when ridden more conservatively with cover. Trainer B. Lockwood stated that he was satisfied with the tactics adopted by jockey Stewart and was disappointed in the geldings overall performance and as such will be sending it for an immediate spell.

FUTURE EVENT – After beginning only fairly was then hampered when tightened for room shortly after the start. Raced wide without cover over the final 800m. Stable representative advised that the gelding will now be sent for a spell.

TEDDER AVENUE – Near the 800m was steadied from the heels of MADISON POINT.

CAPTIVATOR – Raced wide in the early stages.

Jockey B. Stewart (BRAINS) will be interviewed at a later date regarding his use of the whip prior to the 100m.

RACE 3: Bacardi Rum QTIS 2YO Handicap – 1200m

PUMPS – Began awkwardly and passing the 1000m overraced.

GRAND DE LAGO – Began awkwardly.

LADY MCCABE – Began awkwardly, shifted in and made heavy contact with PARKO then continued to shift in making heavy contact with AMORITA. Bumped leaving the 500m. Jockey Cahill reported that the filly hung in for the majority of the event and proved difficult to ride. Trainer H. Page was advised that a warning was placed on the fillys racing manners.

PARKO – Shortly after the start was bumped heavily and then checked when severely crowded between runners and as a consequence lost ground. Leaving the 900m was bumped on the hind quarters and then had to be steadied from the heels of VIRAL.

MISHANI RULER – Raced wide in the early stages. Laid in during the home straight.

PATSYS LASS - Leaving the 1000m had to be steadied from heels.

AMORITA – Bumped heavily by LADY MCCABE at the start. Near the 900m was bumped heavily by CRAFTY SPIRIT and became unbalanced for a short distance. Held up in the early stages of the home straight.

VIRAL – Leaving the 500m was bumped by SPEEDGUN, which shifted out to improve. Upon straightening was again bumped by SPEEDGUN and became unbalanced for a short distance.

SPEEDGUN – Bumped VIRAL leaving the 500m. Leaving the 400m was buffeted between runners when placed in restricted room between VIRAL and PARKO, which shifted out to improve. Jockey R. Stewart (PARKO) was reprimanded for shifting out when insufficiently clear. Near the 250m was bumped by MISHANI RULER, which shifted in.

Jockey L. Cheshire (PATSYS LASS) was fined $100 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m. Stewards mindful of jockey Cheshires good record.

RACE 4: Southern Comfort Class 4 Handicap – 1100m

CHASE THE WIND – Began awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn.

HILL SPY – Slow to begin and was then hampered shortly after the start. Overraced in the middle stages. Stewards questioned App Gallagher regarding his riding particularly in the early stages of the home straight. App Gallagher stated that after suffering interference at the start he was obliged to settle at the rear of the field. He then noted that the gelding overraced for the majority of the event. App Gallagher added that rounding the home turn he was unable to shift out due to SNITZELS JOY racing to his outside and then upon straightening was initially unable to shift back to the inside of HONOUR N STRENGTH when awkwardly placed outside the heels of that runner. App Gallagher further added that when able to obtain clear running over the final 200m the gelding finished the race off only fairly. Stewards advised App Gallagher that there appeared to be an opportunity to improve to the inside of HONOUR N STRENGTH passing the 300m and in their opinion he had erred in his riding by waiting a further 100m to shift in to secure clear running. Given the geldings finishing effort stewards were not satisfied that App Gallaghers actions were culpable under the Rules of Racing and took no further actions.

DAPPER ONE – Had to be eased in the early stages when placed in restricted room between runners.

HOT GOSSIP – Raced wide without cover throughout.

SNITZELS JOY – Raced wide throughout.

RACE 5: Jim Beam Class 2 Handicap – 1200m

STAR ROCK – Shortly after the start was inconvenienced by VOUCH FOR ME, which shifted in. Jockey L. Rolls (VOUCH FOR ME) was reprimanded for shifting in when insufficiently clear. Leaving the 900m STAR ROCK commenced to overrace and when being steadied from the heels of LUNA MISSILE shifted out and raced wide without cover for the remainder of the event.

SETOGA – Near the 1100m was eased when placed in restricted room between runners. Sustained an injury after the winning post which resulted in App B. Thornton being dislodged. App Thornton was examined by the QAS officers and subsequently stood down from his remaining engagements. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have fractured both sesamoids in the off fore leg and was subsequently euthanised on humane grounds. A routine swab sample was taken. Arrangements were made for the gelding to be transported to Gatton University for a post mortem. As App Thornton was unable to weigh in stewards were satisfied that SETOGA had carried its allotted weight and pursuant to AR142 and declared correct weight.

LUNA MISSILE – Overraced in the early stages.

FUSI FOX – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

TE AMO – Jockey J. Lloyd reported that his intention pre-race was to try and obtain a forward position however, after beginning only fairly he was concerned he was going to be caught wide and therefore in the early stages elected to restrain to obtain cover.

RACE 6: Wolf Blass Handicap – 1800m

The start of the race was delayed whilst officials attended to SETOGA following the previous race.
MY GIULIANO – Trainer C. Waller advised the gelding would be ridden handy with cover if circumstances permitted. After being slow to begin settled at the rear of the field and overraced in the early stages. Laid in during the home straight.

HI HARRY - Trainer C. Waller advised the gelding would be ridden handy with cover from the inside barrier if circumstances permitted. The gelding was ridden accordingly. When questioned regarding the performance jockey J. Lloyd stated that he was held up rounding the home turn and disappointed for a run upon straightening before shifting to the inside of GREAT GLEN approaching the 200m to obtain clear running. Jockey Lloyd was of the opinion that the gelding was one paced and not suited when unable to sustain a prolonged finish.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings and a routine swab sample was taken.

CANONGATE - Stewards acceded to a request from trainer B. Smith to replace the injured App B. Thornton with a senior rider. Jockey R. Stewart was subsequently declared the rider. Raced wide throughout.
