QUEENSLAND RACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION Race Day Stewards Report Aquis Thoroughbreds Date: 20 July 2019 Track: Good 4 Weather: Fine Rail: +6m 1400-W/Post; + 5m Remainder Stewards Panel: C. Warwick (Swab Officials), L. Stokes (Secretary) Race 1 – Orbitz Elevators QTIS 2YO Class 2 Handicap – 1200m STAMPE – Began very awkwardly, became unbalanced and then shifted in abruptly. DEADLY ONE – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. Commenced to over-race approaching the 1000m and continued to do so for some distance and proved difficult to settle. EXPLORATION – Bumped heavily on the hindquarters shortly after the start. Near the 1000m when being restrained to obtain cover, commenced to over-race for a short distance. Race 2 – Rochele Painting C,G&E Maiden Plate – 1400m PRINCE DUPORTH – Blundered at the start. Leaving the 1200m laid in despite the efforts of its rider and struck the running rail on two occasions near the 1000m. Jockey D. Griffin reported at scale that his mount laid in badly throughout the event and proved difficult to ride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities and a swab sample was taken. Co-Trainer Brian Guy indicated to Stewards that he would now consider removing the blinkers for its future starts. Stewards advised Mr Guy that the gelding would be required to officially trial prior to racing again. DISTRACTED – Bumped by SOUNDS GREAT after being initially slow to begin. SOUNDS GREAT – Bumped at the start. Leaving the 1200m had to be eased to avoid the heels of PRINCE DUPORTH which was laying in. MONSUN SOLDIER – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn and was obliged to alter course to obtain clear running. TARIO TARIO – When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance, Trainer G. Petersen stated that the gelding appreciated todays firm surface noting that the gelding had been disappointing on rain affected surfaces at its most recent starts. He added that the step up in distance to 1400m was also beneficial to the improved performance. Stewards noted his explanation. Jockey W. O Connell (TARIO TARIO) was fined the sum of $100 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, Stewards were mindful that Jockey O Connell had been absent from riding in recent times, however, also took into consideration the fact that he was the winner of the race. Race 3 – Hickey Lawyers F&M Maiden Plate – 1400m Co-Trainer C. Anderson was fined the sum of $100 for the late declaration of Jockey S. Galloway on AMERICAN LOVE. The start was delayed when LILIERO got its near hind leg up on the barrier partition and was cast momentarily. The filly was removed, examined and cleared to start. FREEDOM FACTOR – Connections advised that the mare was to be ridden more forward today. Ridden accordingly. Near the 1000m had to be eased after improving onto the heels of LOCUST. Near the 200m was inconvenienced by PINEAPPLIE BOOM and shifted out. AZZAGIRL – Slow to begin. MERLINS MAGIC – In the early stages of the home straight was disappointed for a run between AMERICAN LOVE and THE GOOD THE BAD which shifted out slightly. A short distance later was again disappointed for a run to the inside of THE GOOD THE BAD and was obliged to shift out to obtain clear running. LILIERO – When afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance, Jockey L. Dittman stated that the filly failed to travel comfortably throughout the event and proved disappointing. Co-Trainer B. Guy expressed his disappointment in the performance and indicated that he would experiment with a barrier blanket in an attempt to rectify the fillys barrier manners. He also noted that the filly may be better suited when able to improve to the outside of runners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities other than minor lacerations to the near hind hock. Race 4 – Archers The Strata Professionals BenchMark 62 Handicap – 900m NEWS DIRECTOR – Slow into stride. CAPTIVATOR – Slow into stride. Near the 600m had to be restrained from the heels of MOONAN JOYCE. GYPSY TAP – Slow into stride. Near the 700m when racing wide, had to be restrained after improving onto heels. COMMANDEERING – Raced wide for the majority of the event. MOONAN JOYCE – Held up rounding the home turn. The swab attendant reported post-race that the filly was showing signs of the Thumps. Race 5 – Hospitality Strata Class 5 Handicap – 1200m TIME TO PLAY – Began awkwardly. BRED FOR LUCK – Began awkwardly, was then bumped by SO INVINCIBLE, shifted out and had to be steadied when tightened for room. SO INVINCIBLE – Raced 3 wide for the majority of the event. VON RICHTER – When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey A. Allen stated that after beginning well and obtaining a leading position without applying much pressure, he was then challenged for the lead by SECRET SPIRIT and when attempting to hold his position, the mare was under pressure from the 600m and failed to finish the race off and weakened over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. SECRET SPIRIT – The swab attendant reported post-race that the gelding was showing signs of the Thumps. Race 6 – Marsh Advantage Insurance C,G&E Class 1 Handicap – 1400m CERTAIN DOUBT – Hampered shortly after the start and lost ground. HUSSNING – Shortly after the start had to be eased to avoid the heels of PENASQUITO which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey Andrew Spinks (PENASQUITO) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. UBIRR ROCK – Passing the 400m had to be steadied away from the heels of HADRIAN which shifted out under pressure. Jockey G. Colless (HADRIAN) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. PENASQUITO – Had to be steadied approaching the winning post when tightened for room between SHINING BLUE and JACKPOT JAY. REVEL – Jockey A. Fancourt reported at scale that with the blinkers being re-applied today, the gelding over-raced and she felt that this may have attributed to the gelding being unable to finish the race off as expected. HADRIAN – Jockey G. Colless was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a post-race cough. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding the geldings post-race recovery. Race 7 – Arc Utilities F&M Class 1 Handicap – 1400m The start was delayed when DREAM BIG proved difficult to load. Trainer D. Hansen was advised that a warning would be placed against the fillys pre-race manners. The start was further delayed when GO DIAMONDS became fractious and as a result Jockey L. Dittman suffered a minor injury in the barriers. Jockey Dittman expressed some discomfort in his right ankle but advised officials that he was able to fulfil his engagement. LADY EIGHTY EIGHT – Restrained shortly after the start to obtain a position with cover at the rear of the field. PARADISO GIRL – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. GO DIAMONDS – Raced wide from the 800m and was forced wider rounding the home turn. SKYE AND ME – Held up momentarily rounding the home turn and then when attempting a narrow run to the inside of DREAM BIG had to be steadied and was obliged to alter course. A short distance later was disappointed for a run and was unable to obtain clear running until shifting back to the inside of DREAM BIG near the 100m. POWERFUL LASS – Rider Taylor Marshall reported to Stewards that shortly after entering the home straight when applying pressure to his mount, he lost the grasp of his whip momentarily placing him at a disadvantage for a short distance. DULCIE TIE – Stewards questioned Jockey A. Chau and Trainer J. Phelan regarding the tactics adopted when settling outside the leader which was in contrast to the fillys last start. Mr Chau stated that his instructions were to be positive out of the barriers and attempt to obtain a forward position. Trainer J. Phelan confirmed the instructions and noted at the fillys last start it had been slow to begin and settled further back than anticipated. Stewards whilst noting both explanations advised Trainer J. Phelan that whilst acknowledging the fact that the filly settled further back at its last start, he would be expected to notify Stewards should the tactics change from its previous start.
