SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Gold Coast 14 November 2020 - Race 6: Beemah Benchmark 65 Handicap 1400 metres

POCKET PISTOL – Following the geldings poor performance, stable foreperson Ms H. Nichols subsequently advised Stewards that following further examinations after returning to the stables showing no abnormalities, the gelding has pleased the stable in its work and will be monitored going forward.

GENERAL

As riders J. Morris and apprentice A. Patis were not riding at today’s meeting they were replaced as per Stewards summary.

RACE 1: J.R. STEPHENS & CO MAIDEN PLATE 2200 METRES

HOLLYWOOD AL – Slow to begin.

CAPTAIN RIDDLE – Raced three-wide without cover for the majority of the race. Stewards questioned apprentice J. J. Lloyd, in the presence of senior rider A. Mallyon, into the tactics that he adopted on the gelding. Apprentice Lloyd stated that it was his intention to improve forward when caught wide, however was unable to do so due to the pace set and he was unable to muster enough speed to improve forward. He further added that he anticipated the pace slackening approaching the 1200 metres, however it failed to do so and he was then obliged to race three-wide for the majority of the race without cover. Trainer D. Raffin advised Stewards he was of the opinion that once CAPTAIN RIDDLE was unable to improve forward it may have been a better option to restrain the gelding to find a position closer to the inside rail. Whilst Stewards noted J.J. Lloyd is an apprentice rider, Stewards were of the opinion that it may have been a better option to restrain and take a position behind DAY TO FAVOUR in the middle stages and further that Stewards expect better judgment in similar circumstances.

ROCKAWAY BEACH – A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which finished tailed off, revealed a slower than expected recovery from racing and displayed signs of minor heat stress.

DAY TO FAVOUR – Apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for use of the whip on six (6) occasions prior to the 100m, being one (1) more than permitted.

STONELEIGH JACKSON – Was momentarily steadied near the 100 metres when crowded for room by RIVERKY, which shifted in.

RIVERKY – Laid out rounding the home turn. Had difficulties obtaining clear running in the home straight and shifted in approaching the 100 metres, hampering STONELEIGH JACKSON. Steadied near the 50 metres when awkwardly placed at the heels of SUN MOON SKY. Stewards questioned apprentice J. J. Lloyd, in the presence of senior rider A. Mallyon, into his riding of the gelding and particularly his riding of the gelding to the finish line. After hearing submissions from A. Mallyon and apprentice Lloyd, who stated he had concerns that he may have improved onto the heels of MEMORIAL DAY if ridden vigorously, Stewards acknowledged their submissions into the checkered run that RIVERKY had in the home straight and the difficulties for an apprentice rider in those circumstances, however Stewards were also of the opinion that the opportunity was there to direct RIVERKY to the outside of the heels of MEMORIAL DAY  and apply further pressure until the winning post and that Stewards would expect that action in similar circumstances.
