Following an incident behind the barriers prior to the commencement of Race 4, the race times were amended as follows:

Race 4 to commence at 3:53pm
Race 5 to commence at 4:28pm
Race 6 to commence at 5:05pm
Race 7 to commence at 5:35pm

RACE 1: FIRST NATIONAL BROADBEACH QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200 METRES

Skye Bogenhuber, the rider of the 2nd placegetter HINGED, lodged an objection against 1st placegetter ANGEL LIKE for alleged interference over the final 100 metres. It was established that near the 75 metres ANGEL LIKE shifted out abruptly and bumped heavily with HINGED, resulting in HINGED being checked and losing its rightful running. Stewards are of the opinion that HINGED would have finished ahead of the 1st placegetter had such interference not occurred and as a result the protest was upheld and Stewards reversed the placings.

COPPERCHINO – Overraced in the early stages.

HINGED – Near the 75 metres was bumped heavily, became unbalanced and was checked when ANGEL LIKE (M McGillivray) shifted out. Rider M McGillivray was found guilty of a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that near the 75 metres whilst riding ANGEL LIKE along he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of HINGED, resulting in that horse being bumped and checked. In determining penalty, Stewards gave consideration to the mitigating circumstances surrounding the offence in that ANGEL LIKE had a tendency to lay out. Rider McGillivray’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of nine (9) days to commence at midnight on 1 March 2021 and to expire at midnight on 10 March 2021.

ANGEL LIKE – Laid out under pressure near the 150 metres before being straightened by its rider. Near the 75 metres shifted out under pressure bumping heavily with HINGED.

CAMPAI – Slow to begin. Overraced in the early stages and was steadied near the 800 metres to avoid the heels of COPPERCHINO. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be distressed and to have locked it’s off side stifle. Trainer S Morrissey was adviseda veterinary clearance would be required prior to the filly’s next race start.

MYSTIC FLAME – Overraced in the early stages. Raced wide without cover.

DEEL OF FORTUNE – Slow to begin. Near the 300 metres steadied away from the heels of CAMPAI, which shifted out to improve.

BOOM EXPRESS – Slow to begin. Raced wide with cover. In the home straight laid in and proved difficult to ride out.

CONTESSA – Overraced in the early stages. Held up round the home turn and for the entire home straight and went to the line without being fully tested. Approaching the 100 metres was disappointed for a run when MY GIRL ROCKS, after initially shifting out, shifted in. Rider M McGillivray reported that he attempted to shift wider on the track approaching the home turn but was unable to do so without causing interference so elected to ride for luck, which did not eventuate.

SWEETHEARTS – Tailed the field and was eased down the home straight. Trainer M Caltabiano was advised that SWEETHEARTS must officially trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing due to the filly being uncompetitive.

WINDSTREAM – Raced wide without cover.

SILENT WEEKEND – Checked at the start between MY GIRL ROCKS and NICOVER, which shifted in.

RACE 3: CAPITAL PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE 1100 METRES

MS THORPEDO – Shortly after the start was steadied when tightened between AEECEE SACRED and SUNNY EKCELS.

RACE 5: GRADY & SON BENCHMARK 72 HANDICAP 1800 METRES

DYNAMIC THINKER – Trainer L Kelly advised it is the intention for the gelding to be ridden forward with cover. Raced wide in the early stages before gaining cover passing the 1200 metres. Performed below market expectation. Rider M McGillivray reported that his mount raced lethargic throughout and laid out from the 700 metres. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer L Kelly was of the opinion that the gelding did not back up after racing at the Gold Coast on 6 February 2021.

QUOTANT – Held up round the home turn and in the home straight until passing the 150 metres.

COURTING VERITY – Slow to begin. Near the 800 metres inconvenienced and carried wider to avoid the heels of SHAIBANAT and overraced from this point. Raced wide without cover from the 800 metres. Performed below market expectation. Apprentice T Townsend reported that after being inconvenienced near the 800 metres and exposed wide without cover, her mount began to overrace and as a result did not finish the event off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have the thumps.
