GENERAL
Rider Chris Taylor did not attend the race meeting due to illness. Stewards acceded to a request for apprentice Alex Patis (claiming 1.5kg) to replace Chris Taylor as no suitable rider was available.
 
RACE 1: HEINEKEN GOLD COAST CUP ON SALE QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1400 METRES
 
DELTA MISS – Improved onto heels near the 900 metres before being steadied by its rider.
 
 
RACE 2: TOTAL TOOLS BURLEIGH WATERS LOW PRICE GUARANTEE QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1800 METRES
 
DEAR SIBLING – Laid out in the home straight.
 
HANGIN' HIGH – Overraced in the early and middle stages.
 
TRAVOLI – Slow to begin.
 
DREAM CANDY – Overraced in the early stages. Rider J Adams dismounted on the track post-race and was subsequently examined by the Queensland Ambulance Services, with J Adams then being stood down for the remainder of his engagements.
 
SAXON ROSE – Slow to begin. Made the crossing near the 1600 metres awkwardly and contacted the running rail, resulting in apprentice E Atkinson becoming unbalanced.
 
 
RACE 3: THOROUGHBRED SALES FIND YOUR NEXT CHAMPION CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1800 METRE
 
SMART METEOR – Performed below market expectation. Rider T Wolfgram reported that the gelding did not handle the heavy 10 track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
CLASS OF ROYALTY – Performed below market expectation. Apprentice M Potgieter reported that it was not his intention to lead, however after beginning well settled in the lead and was not pressured. He further reported that the gelding travelled well but when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding. Apprentice M Potgieter was of the opinion that he may have set too quick a tempo during the middle stages, which was detrimental to the gelding’s performance.
 
CALL ME LEGEND – Improved performance. Trainer K Hickmott reported that the gelding was suited to today’s heavy track and did not have any luck in running at its most recent start on 19 March 2021 and had finished the event off fairly. Stewards noted his comments.
 
 
RACE 4: BOSTIK AUSTRALIA SMART ADHESIVES CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1200 METRES
 
Following an inspection of the 1200 metre chute, the start was moved to the course proper.
 
WOWSERS – Rider T Wolfgram reported that the gelding failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
BIZOU – Slow to begin.
 
NORM'S CHOICE – Rider A Allen reported that the mare failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
TOUJOURS L'AMOUR – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from one nostril and to be suffering from mild heat stress. Trainer B Baldwin was advised that mare is required to undergo a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres in the presence of Stewards prior to racing again.  
 
 
RACE 5: MAKITA AUSTRALIA ONE BATTERY SOLUTION MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000 METRES
SINE CURVE – Raced wide without cover before giving ground. Rider A Spinks reported that the mare failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
 
RACE 6: TOTAL TOOLS BURLEIGH WATERS EVERY TOOL EVERY TRADE MAIDEN PLATE 1400 METRES
 
MACIPENKO (GB) – Performed below market expectation. Rider B Nothdurft reported that he was instructed to be positive on the gelding from the wide gate and, after being able to obtain the lead shortly after the start, travelled well until passing the 600 metres and, when placed under pressure, failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion may not have handled the heavy 10 track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have poor post-race recovery.
 
RIVERKY – Raced keenly in the early stages.  
 
KIRKEBY – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight until passing the 200 metres.
 
CHLOE JADE – Hampered at the start between DEAL OF POWER and MACIPENKO.
 
CARLIE EKCELS – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped with ICONICALLY. Near the 400 metres shifted out to improve and bumped with COULOMB. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight. 
 
DEAL OF POWER – Laid in during the home straight. Rider A Allen was fined $500 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on eight (8) occasions prior to the 100 metres, being three (3) more than permitted.
 
ICONICALLY – Bumped on jumping. Laid in during the home straight. Apprentice J Lloyd was fined $300 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on six (6) occasions prior to the 100 metres, being one (1) more than permitted.
 
 
RACE 7: DEWALT AUSTRALIA GUARANTEED TOUGH BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1000 METRES
 
SO SHY (NZ) – Rider B Pengelly reported that the gelding failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions and further reported that his saddle shifted slightly shortly after the start.
 
MISS LUCINDA – Apprentice A Patis reported that the mare failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
KINGSCOTE – Overraced in the early and middle stages.
 
MEMPHIS SQUAW – Slow to begin. Raced wide in the early stages before obtaining the lead near the 600 metres.
 
PYTHIA – Slow to begin.
 
 
RACE 8: TOTAL TOOLS BURLEIGH WATERS SUPPORTING LOCAL TRADIES 0 - 60 HANDICAP 1800 METRES
 
AEECEE SACRED – Began awkwardly. Rider B Pengelly reported that the gelding failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
GINJA – Overraced in the early and middle stages. Rider B Nothdurft reported that he was of the opinion that the gelding, after stepping up in distance today, would be better suited with a change of gear at its next start as it has a tendency to overrace.
 
IRISH PARDON – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Eased down in the home straight. Rider S Galloway reported that the gelding failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hind. Trainer K Hickmott was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required prior to the gelding’s next race start.
 
PAST TENSE – Slow to begin.
 
WILLIAM – Raced wide without cover. Apprentice M Potgieter reported that the gelding failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
LEO THE LION – Eased down the home straight. Rider A Spinks reported that the gelding travelled well until approaching the home turn but failed to stretch out from that point and was eased down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have poor post-race recovery.
 
RURU – Raced wide without cover.
 
CHIEF COMMAND – Apprentice E Atkinson reported that the gelding pulled hard throughout the early and middle stages and did not finish the event off.
 
OCTOBER JOY – After racing wide with cover until passing the 1400 metres, was then permitted to stride and take up a leading position near the 1000 metres.
 
 
RACE 9: HOUSE OF HEINEKEN MAY 8 CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1400 METRES
 
MANDEVILLE ROCKER (NZ) – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race.
 
LIARA – Eased down in the home straight. Rider B Pengelley reported that the mare failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions and as a result he eased the mare down in the straight. Stewards will contact trainer C Waller to follow up on the mare’s performance today.
 
CONTESSA – Apprentice J Lloyd reported that the filly was disappointing and failed to handle the heavy 10 track conditions.
 
MOCIAL CHIEF – Slow to begin.
 
DANSDALE (NZ) – Raced wide with cover. Eased down in the home straight. After passing the winning post collapsed and was subsequently found upon arrival by the official veterinarian to be deceased. Post-race swab samples were taken for analysis and the horse will undergo a post mortem. Rider S Galloway underwent an assessment by the Queensland Ambulance Services and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
