Near the 900 metres, commenced to race keenly and as a result was shifted wider to avoid the heels of another runner and as a consequence raced three-wide without cover for the remainder. Stewards questioned rider A Chau in regards to the below market expectation performance. Rider A Chau reported that after beginning only fairly he rode his mount along in the early stages to secure a more forward position, however when the pace of the race steadied near the 900 metres he was forced to shift out when racing keenly and as a result was forced to race three-wide from this point. Rider Chau went on to state that despite racing wide from near the 900 metres he was disappointed with the finishing effort of the gelding, which he advised was under pressure from well before the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. A post-race swab sample was collected for analysis.

VIKING FOREVER – Began awkwardly.

ONE POINT FIVE – Stewards questioned rider J Guthmann-Chester in regards to the below market expectation performance. Rider Guthmann-Chester reported that the filly was stepping up to 1400 metres in today’s event for the first occasion and for that reason had a tendency to race keenly in the early stages. Rider Guthmann-Chester further reported that from a point near the 900 metres he commenced to receive pressure from TANGO TINO, which was racing to his outside, which further resulted in his mount continuing to overrace through the middle stages. Rider Guthmann-Chester went on to report that despite this, he was disappointed with the manner in which the filly finished the race off and expressed disappointment with its performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying mild lameness in the off hind and some nasal discharge.

TANGO TINO – Stewards opened an inquiry in relation to the tactics adopted by rider R Bishop on the filly from the 900 metres. Of concern to Stewards was rider Bishop’s decision to ride the filly along at that point of the race when there appeared to be an opportunity to maintain a position racing outside ONE POINT FIVE without placing pressure on his mount at that point. Stewards, after taking evidence from rider Bishop and Trainer B Laming, adjourned the inquiry to examine the details of the sectional times and wagering on the event. Rider R Bishop was fined $600.00 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on nine (9) occasions prior to the 100 metres, being four (4) more than permitted.

ROYAL SKY – Began awkwardly. Hung in during the early and middle stages. Stewards questioned rider M McGillivray in regards to his riding between the 700 metres until approaching the 400 metres as to whether there was an opportunity to place the colt under greater pressure at that point to improve when racing in a rearward position. Rider McGillivray reported that he was instructed to ride the colt in a rearward position as it races best when ridden in this manner. Rider McGillivray further reported that for this reason he settled in a rearward position and was reluctant to place the colt under pressure prior to the 500 metres as he was concerned that the colt may not finish its race off if pressured too soon in the event. Rider McGillivray added that when placed under pressure coming to the home turn, the colt hit a flat spot and failed to quicken as he had expected, however from the 150 metres in his opinion ran on reasonably. Stewards noted the explanation of McGillivray, however advised him that in their opinion on this occasion it may have been more advantageous to place the colt under pressure to improve sooner than he did on this occasion.

After being held up approaching the 200 metres, attempted to shift out to secure clear running however was prevented from doing so by another runner, which was hanging in, and as a consequence was held up for a considerable distance.
