QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT GOLD COAST TURF CLUB GOLD COAST – SATURDAY 26TH MARCH 2022 WEATHER –FINE TRACK RATING – HEAVY 9 RAIL – 3M 1400M TO W/P; TRUE REMAINDER PENETROMETER – 6.1 OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – R Hitchener Stewards – P Zimmermann, P Reardon, C FredrickClerk of Scales – M KingJudges – S McMahon, G Anderson, S MallyonVeterinarian – Dr A HopgoodSwab Attendants – K Kilpatrick, L BobeszkoStarter – K Watson, S Andrews SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT Stewards today concluded an inquiry in relation to Jockey B Pengelly’s riding of BALTRAY over the final 500m in Race 4 at the Gold Coast on 4 December. Stewards adjourned the inquiry on the day of the race to allow them to undertake a review of the betting activity on the race and well as to consider the evidence tendered at the inquiry. The betting review on the race did not reveal and abnormal activity and BALTRAY’S trainer Mr L Wheeler provided evidence to the inquiry that he had wagered on the gelding to be successful in the event. After considering at the evidence available to them, Stewards advised Jockey Pengelly that in their opinion he had erred by not placing BALTRAY under greater pressure to improve it position in the early stages of the home straight. Jockey Pengelly was further advised that in their opinion this failure ultimately was a contributing factor in him being disappointed for a run near the 150m due to him not being positioned closely enough to the runners in advance of him to take advantage of this run prior to it closing due to ground he was required to make up as a result of his prior lack of vigour. Stewards did accept Jockey Pengelly’s explanation in relation to his riding over the final 100m and noted that Jockey Pengelly had committed to shifting to the outside of PRIME ASSET to improve as the run started to present between PRIME ASSET and TAKING FLIGHT and thus, he was not in a position to take advantage of the run between those runners once it presented. In all the circumstances, despite being of the opinion that Jockey Pengelly had erred in the early stages of the home straight, in totality, Stewards were not of the opinion that Jockey’s Pengelly’s level of culpability was sufficient enough to be in contravention of any of the relevant rules, and therefore took the matter no further.
