Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today’s meeting-

Race 1: GOLD COAST SPRING CARNIVAL ON SALE QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1200 metres
LOUISIANA STAR – Declared a late scratching by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice at 8:50am.
The start was delayed when GALAXY GENERAL became fractious in the barriers. The Colt was removed from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and subsequently passed suitable to race. Trainer L Freedman was advised that a warning would be issued against the colt’s barrier manners.
GALAXY GENERAL – Slow to begin. Laid in for the majority.
RAPID DUDE – As Jackson Morris was ill and unable to ride at the meeting, he was replaced as the gelding’s rider by apprentice J Williams as there was no other suitable senior riders available at the time of this race. Raced three-wide with cover for the majority.
LORD VADER – Raced three-wide without cover throughout.
TOKYO BLOSSOM – Bumped heavily on jumping.
PRINCE OF MARAKESH – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn.
MISHANI MOBSTER – Began awkwardly and as a result made heavy contact with another runner. Passing the 1100m, was steadied to avoid the heels of another runner. Held up for clear running between the 500m and 300m.
Race 2: ST JOHNS MORGANS QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1200 metres
BLACK CAT – Bled both nostrils during the event. Trainer A Plumb was advised that as this was the first occasion on which the gelding had bled, it would now be banned from racing for a period of 3 months and further would be required to gallop 1000m in the presence of stewards prior to next racing.
MUST – Raced wide in the early stages. Raced greenly in the home straight.
PEONY SURPRISE – Began awkwardly, losing ground. Apprentice M Castle was reminded of her obligations in relation to using her whip in a manner which raises her arm above shoulder height.
YES TO EXCESS – Began awkwardly, losing ground. Laid out for the majority of the event.
Race 3: ST JOHNS' COLE RESIDENTIAL QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap 1700 metres
Following the running of race 2, the track was upgraded to a good 4.
DU MAURIER – Jockey B Pengelly was reprimanded for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).
BIRAGUE – After being caught wide in the early stages, was allowed to stride forward by its rider to obtain the leading position near the 1300m.
PERFECT ENCOUNTER – Apprentice J Molloy was fined $300 for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).
CHAYSE 'N' TANYA – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.
LATE NIGHT DEVIL – Near the 700m, was disappointed for a run and lost ground.
Race 4: ST JOHNS EVANS BRANDONS FAMILY LAWYERS Maiden Plate 1700 metres
The start was delayed when TRENCHES reared high in the barrier and in doing so struck AGOSTINI. Subsequently both TRENCHES and AGOSTINI were removed from the barriers and examined by the veterinary surgeon. Following this examination TRENCHES was cleared to start however AGOSTINI was declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 1:31pm acting on veterinary advice. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on AGOSTINI be refunded with the following deductions to apply-
1st – 3c the win, 9c the place,
2nd – 6c the place,
3rd – 7c the place.
Trainer D Chujo was advised TRENCHES would be required to officially barrier trial to satisfaction of stewards prior to next racing.
BEAUREGARD – Hung in in the home straight and as a result was unable to be fully tested by its rider.
MOONLIGHT COWBOY – Near the 1600m, was checked by its rider when awkwardly placed at heels. For some distance following this, raced ungenerously whilst being restrained.
PERFECT IMPACT – For some distance in the early and middle stages was steadied from heels whilst racing keenly before being allowed to stride forward by its rider to obtain a position outside the leader passing the 1000m.
ENVIABLE – Slow to begin.
REIGN HAYLIN SHINE (NZ) – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
FOXY FRAULIEN – Jockey R Jamieson was reprimanded for using her whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).
TRENCHES – Held up approaching and rounding the home turn.
Race 5: ST JOHNS KDL PROPERTY GROUP BENCHMARK 62 Handicap1100 metres
The start was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.
PHOENIX RIVER – Leaving the 800m, improved onto heels and as a result was forced to shift wider and as a consequence, raced three-wide for the remainder of the event.
WHITEBAIT PATTIE – Trainer T Cowan advised that it is the intention to ride the gelding further back in the field, with cover, if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly.
DEBUSSY – Over raced in the early stages.
COSSIE – Over raced in the early and middle stages.
SHE'S A TIGRESS – Raced three-wide without cover throughout.
AVENUE OF STARS – Slow to begin.
Race 6: ST JOHNS SAFE FINANCIAL QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1350 metres
BEACON PLACE – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer T Timbery was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.
GOING TO THE SUN – Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight.
GOSSIP COLUMN – Near the 100m, momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed at heels. Jockey B Thornton advised that the filly was able to obtain a forward position in accordance with its normal racing pattern and travelled comfortably throughout the event. He added that the filly when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. A swab sample was taken.
SWEET ALYSSUM – Slow to begin.
APATAKI (NZ) – Raced greenly throughout. When questioned in relation to the seemingly improved performance, trainer B Laming advised that in the geldings first start it was slow to begin and raced greenly throughout the event. Mr Laming added that the gelding had worked well subsequent to that run and that with the benefit of race experience, he had expected an improved performance and further was suited stepping up in distance in today’s event.
OZARCH – Slow to begin.
Race 7: ST JOHNS CRISIS CENTRE Maiden Handicap 1350 metres
EVERLAST – Began awkwardly. Laid out rounding the home turn. Near the 1200m, was tightened for room and made contact with the running rail. Near the 1100m, when the pace steadied, improved onto heels and was eased.
ZAFARANA – Near the 1200m, was tightened for room when GADIDAE shifted in when not completely clear. B Thornton the rider of GADIDAE was reprimanded as a result of this incident. Near the 1100m, when the pace steadied, improved onto heels, and was eased.
KOMATA – Began awkwardly.
BANDIT – Raced keenly in the early stages.
STAR OF ADELAIDE – Raced three-wide without cover for the majority. Stewards questioned L Allen in the relation to the performance of the gelding which shortened noticeably in betting. Jockey Allen advised that from the wide barrier she elected to ride the gelding towards the rear of the field in an endeavour to obtain cover. Jockey Allen added that she was able to obtain a position one off the fence, however when the pace of the race steadied near the 1000m, she improved onto heels and as a result was forced to shift to a three-wide position. Jockey Allen added that despite this the gelding travelled comfortably from this point however when asked to quicken the gelding failed to respond to her riding and ran on only fairly in the home straight. Jockey Allen further indicated that in her opinion the gelding may be better suited, ridden in a further forward position. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 8: ST JOHNS BIRKBECKS JEWELLERS Class 4 Handicap 1700 metres
GINJA – Slow to begin. When questioned in relation to the below market expectation performance, Jockey B Thornton advised that the gelding travelled only reasonably during the event, and when placed under pressure from the 500m, responded for only a short distance and in his opinion proved disappointing in the home straight. Jockey Thornton added that the gelding did not feel entirely comfortable in its action over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
DIASONIC – Over raced in the early and middle stages. Held up approaching and rounding the home turn. Jockey C Robertson had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period of 7 days for using his whip excessively during the event. AR132(5). The period of suspension to commence at midnight the 30th of July and to expire at midnight the 6th of August.
BIANCO NUOVO – Raced three-wide without cover throughout. Apprentice J Williams was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).
SCHILLER'S MYST – Slow to begin.
TICINO BELLE – Jockey T See was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).
Race 9: ST JOHNS ACCESSIBLE HOMES AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1200 metres
MINTO'S PARADISE – Began awkwardly, losing ground.
SIREN ROCK – Near the 900m, put in an awkward stride.
POWER BOOM – As jockey B Thornton was dual engaged, he was subsequently replaced by jockey L Allen.
YOU'LL BE MIST – Trainer D Hanson was fined $200 for the late rider notification. LR67. Began awkwardly, losing ground.
PHILLY SPECIAL – Began awkwardly, losing ground.
WILL HE FOXTROT – Began awkwardly, losing ground.
