STEWARDS REPORT

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

GOLD COAST – WEDNESDAY 30 NOVEMBR 2022

WEATHER – OVERCAST TRACK RATING – GOOD 4                      RAIL – 1M 950M-350M TRUE REMAINDER
PENETROMETER –4.63

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – R Hitchener
Stewards – D Aurisch, J Cremin, D McMahon
Clerk of Scales – K Daly
Judge – G Anderson, J Brown
Veterinarian – Dr G Silvestri
Swab Attendants – K Kilpatrick, L Bobeszko
Starter – K Watson

GENERAL

Stewards approved the following overweight allowance at today’s meeting-

Race 4- SOUNDS DEVINE- M Cahill- +1/2kg

Race 1: JONKER @ AQUIS QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap 900 metres

The start was delayed when a number of runners proved difficult to load.

RISKY INVESTMENT – Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards considered a request from co-trainer Mr T Button to have the colt declared a non-runner on the grounds of being denied a fair start. After reviewing the stewards patrol footage, stewards found that as the start was affected, the colt reared in the barriers, striking its head on the barrier partition and as a consequence, lost ground at the start. Stewards further determined that the actions of the barrier attendant momentarily holding the colt when assisting it in the barriers as the start was affected was inconsequential and if not for the colt’s own barrier manners, it was otherwise afforded a fair start. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

MISHANI GANGSTER – Trainer L Ross was advised that he would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate for the gelding prior to next racing after proving extremely difficult to load. Raced greenly in the home straight.

CIFRADO – Raced greenly in the home straight.

Race 2: ZAC LLOYD PREMIERSHIP APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR OPEN Handicap 900 metres

DESERT MAN – Over raced in the early stages.

SUPERARE – Near the 700m, steadied when awkwardly placed at heels.

PRINCESS LUNAR – Slow to begin.

PIZONIE – Began awkwardly.

Race 3: 3 LES KELLY PREMIERSHIP TRAINER OF THE YEAR Maiden Plate 1700 metres

ENUNCIATION – Began awkwardly. Stewards questioned apprentice K Wilson-Taylor in relation to the tactics adopted on the gelding. Apprentice Wilson-Taylor advised that after finding the leading position in the early stages, it was apparent that runners which were racing to his outside were intent on pushing forward in an endeavour to not race wide on the track. He added that for this reason he elected to take hold of the gelding to obtain a position with cover, however in doing so he elected to shift to a one-off position to enable him to trail GERADJOESPH which was a favoured runner in the event rather than CRYSTALLIZATION. Apprentice Wilson -Taylor added that shortly after this SEQUOIA CHIEFTAIN was crossed by GERADJOESPH which resulted in him being shuffled further back in the field than he had hoped. Apprentice Wilson-Taylor went onto state that from the 800m, BANTAMWEIGHT shifted three-wide around the field which prevented him from shifting out to improve for a short distance, however from the 450m when able to obtain clear running, the gelding failed to quicken as he had anticipated and despite the circumstances of the race not being entirely to the benefit of the gelding, he was still somewhat disappointed with the gelding’s finishing effort. Stewards noted the explanation.

GERARDJOSEPH – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

SEQUOIA CHIEFTAIN – After being caught wide in the early stages, was ridden forward by its rider to obtain the position outside leader near the 1200m.

BANTAMWEIGHT – Slow to begin. Raced three-wide from the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

CAIRDEAS – Stood flat footed at the start and lost ground. Held up rounding the home turn. Apprentice J Lloyd was fined $200 for using his whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).

CRYSTALLIZATION – After being caught wide in the early stages, was ridden forward by its rider to obtain the leading position near the 1350m.

DEEPTRIX – Began awkwardly.

Race 4: GOGOL GOLD COAST HORSE OF THE YEAR Class 1 Handicap 1350 metres

KOPANGI – Slow to begin.

CANNY BE BETTER – Tightened for room at the start and as a result settled further back than anticipated.

TWYFORD – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

RAPID OUTLAW – On returning to scale, jockey B Thompson advised that it was not his intention to settle as far forward as he did, however after beginning well and as a result of racing wide, he allowed the filly to stride forward to obtain the position outside the leader passing the 1000m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

SOUNDS DIVINE – Held up rounding the home turn.

DAULAT MACHTIGAMOR – Raced wide without cover for the majority.

STAR SEEKER – Began awkwardly.

Race 5: NOEL CALLOW PREMIERSHIP JOCKEY OF THE YEAR QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden 1350 metres

ENVIABLE – Raced in restricted room for some distance passing the 700m.

MISHANI MISSILE – Began awkwardly.

PUSH TURBO – Raced three-wide without cover for the majority.

TIRITIRI – Raced three-wide with cover for the majority. Cast its near-fore plate in running.

UNDER THE LIMIT – Began awkwardly. Raced four-wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to obtain the leading position near the 800m.

PHEEBLE'S SPIRIT – Near the 400m, when commencing to weaken, was placed in restricted room and eased.

SPIRIT QUEEN – Bumped on jumping. Raced three-wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to obtain a forward position one off the fence near the 800m. Jockey B Thompson reported that despite doing some work in the early stages, in his opinion the filly was entitled to finish the race off in a better manner than which it did over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery.

Race 6: ZAAKI FEATURE RACEHORSE OF THE YEAR BENCHMARK 75 Handicap 2200 metres

SAVVY OAK – Apprentice J Lloyd was fined $200 for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).

CHOCOLATIER – When asked to comment on the tactics adopted on the gelding particularly between the 1500m and 1300m whereby jockey L Cassidy elected to improve forward of RAHAAN to obtain the leading position Jockey Cassidy reported that in the early stages he rode the gelding along and as a result when exiting the home straight n the first occasion, it had commenced to over race. Jockey Cassidy added that for this reason rather than maintaining a position outside RAHAAN where he felt the gelding would continue to over race he elected to stride forward to obtain the leading position. Jockey Cassidy went onto state that after finding the lead, the gelding commenced to race more tractably and ceased over racing. Stewards noted the explanation.

REFLECT THE STARS – Tightened for room at the start, lost ground and as a result settled further back than anticipated.

GAMBU – Began awkwardly. Near the 700m, improved onto heels and as a result shifted three-wide to improve. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

A DEEL OF HUMOUR – Over raced during the early and middle stages.

Race 7: MARTIN COLLINS AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 70 Handicap1700 metres

NAMAKWA – Near the 1100m, was checked and forced wider after improving onto heels.

ALDERMAN – Faulted near the 1100m and was eased down and retired from the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a near-foreleg injury. After receiving veterinary treatment on course, the gelding was transported to the Gold Coast Equine Cinic for further veterinary assessment. Trainer Mr L Gough was advised that a veterinary certificate will be required for the gelding prior to it next racing.

BERNIE'S TIGER – Near the 1100m, was checked and forced wider after improving onto heels. As a result, raced wide for the remainder.

TAREX – On returning to scale, jockey M Harley reported that the gelding was inclined to lay in from the 600m and when placed under pressure, failed to run on as he had expected and in his opinion was disappointing. As the veterinary surgeon was required to attend to an injured horse, a veterinary examination was unable to be carried out, however stewards will follow up with trainer L Mayfield-Smith in the days following today’s event in relation to the gelding’s post-race recovery.

BOLD CONTENDER – Slow to begin. Jockey R Fradd was fined $200 for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m. AR132(7)(a)(ii).

GO DARCY – After being caught wide in the early stages, was ridden forward to obtain the leading position near the 1100m.

KIPLING'S JOURNEY – Momentarily forced to shift wider near the 1100m.

Race 8: GPS RUGBY BENCHMARK 68 Handicap 1200 metres

TANKER – Apprentice S Tomlinson was replaced as the rider of TANKER by Apprentice A Jones due to transportation difficulties. Raced three-wide and hung out for the majority.

IMPOSING BEAU – Due to a clerical error some gear publications displayed the gelding as wearing both winkers and blinkers. The correct gear changes- Winkers off, Blinkers on. Near the 1100m was checked to avoid the heels of MY ODDETTE which wasn’t completely clear. Jockey R Wiggins the rider of MY ODDETTE was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

VETTA VELOCITA – Over raced during the early and middle stages. Held up rounding the home turn before shifting to the outside in the early stages of the home straight to secure clear running.
