STEWARDS REPORT

GOONDIWINDI RACE CLUB

GOONDIWNDI – SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2024

WEATHER – Overcast TRACK RATING – Good 4; Upgraded to a Good 3 at 11am RAIL – True

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – W. Glass

GENERAL

Stewards permitted the following overweight:
Race 2, No. 15 PONTOON PETE – B. Newport +0.5kg (55.5kg)

Race 1: RON GLASSER MAIDEN PLATE (1200m)

Correct weight was delayed allowing Trainer S. Kirkwood and Jockey M. Savva to view footage of the home straight. Once satisfied there was no grounds for objection, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

BETTER EXCEED – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after being fractious in the tie-ups and passed fit to start. Slow to begin and lost ground.

BONJOUR MATE – Momentarily held-up for clear running entering the home straight.

LE GAGNEUR – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Bumped approaching the 200m. Apprentice C. Sutherland stated that although this proved detrimental to the gelding’s performance, in that in previous starts the gelding had been able to obtain the lead without difficulty, the gelding did race flat throughout the event.

MISTER – Trainer P. Webster was fined $100 under AR102(a) for failing to declare the MISTER had been gelded prior to this preparation. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Leaving the 100m, obliged to restrain off the heels of LE GAGNEUR and lost ground. Apprentice R. Thorburn was reminded of his obligations under AR131(b) to ride his mounts out fully to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

QUARTER RED – Bumped approaching the 200m with LE GAGNEUR and became unbalanced. Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages. Apprentice T. Noble was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in that leaving the 100m, she did permit her mount to shift out, directing LE GAGNEUR into the line of MISTER, which was obliged to restrain and lost its rightful running.

BRIGHT FLAMES – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

MONTAGLIARI – Slow to begin.

RAVERA (NZ) – Began awkwardly.

SEVERINE – Slow to begin. Performed below market expectations. Jockey A. Spinks stated that the poor start and fast tempo set throughout the event resulting in his mount settling further back than anticipated proved detrimental to the mare’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SHINTARO LASS – Jockey M. Savva was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on six occasions, one more than permitted prior to the 100m.

Race 2: KNIGHTS PLANT HIRE BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP (1200m)

Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view the photo-finish for 2nd. Correct weight was further delayed allowing Jockey M. Butler and Apprentice A. Graham to view footage of the home straight. Once both parties were satisfied there was no grounds for objection, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

RECANATI – Laid in under pressure approaching the 100m before being correct by its rider, momentarily crowding ZEELUCK between runners.

MADALSA – Bumped heavily on jumping and carried inwards. Obliged to be shifted off heels approaching the 100m to obtain clear running. Apprentice R. Thorburn advised the mare would be better suited over further distances.

TARBENA (NZ) – Hampered between runners on jumping and lost ground. Tailed the field throughout the event.

GLIDE ON BY – Began only fairly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RED HOT RUBIX – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

ZEELUCK – Crowded between runners approaching the 100m.

STRYKING PRINCESS – Raced in restricted room between the running rail and ZEELUCK over the concluding stages.

MOUNTBATTEN – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Jockey A. Spinks was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six occasions, one more than permitted prior to the 100m.

SOOZIE MAREE – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide and without cover in the early stages of the event. Obliged to shift wider rounding the home-turn to obtain clear running.

MISHANI SCANDAL – Began awkwardly and bumped.

KLATTEN – Bumped heavily on jumping before blundering.

PONTOON PETE – Raced and without cover for majority of the event. Carried wider by SOOZIE MARIE rounding the home-turn.

MISHANI PHAROAH – Began very awkwardly and bumped.

Following the running of this event, Jockey R. Payne was examined by QAS having aggravated an existing injury to her right leg and deemed unfit to fulfil her remaining engagement. Jockey Payne was advised she would require a medical clearance prior to race-riding again.

Race 3: KNIGHTS PLANT HIRE BENCHMARK 55 Handicap (1200m)

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, a protest was lodged by Apprentice T. Noble and Trainer S. Mesken, connections of 4th placegetter, RICHUNCLEMONEYBAGS, against FULL DOSAGE (2nd placegetter) alleging interference in the entirety of the home straight. After taking evidence from both parties and viewing the Stewards’ patrol footage, it was established that approaching the 200m, RICHUNCLEMONEYBAGS was momentarily steadied when attempting a marginal run to the inside of FULL DOSAGE, before continuing to attempt that run throughout the home straight when there was insufficient room to do so. Subsequently, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that RICHUNCLEMONEYBAGS going to the line untested was as a result of any shift by FULL DOSAGE, and subsequently the protest was dismissed, and correct weight declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

JOEY JAWS (NZ) – Began awkwardly on jumping resulting in Jockey D. Baker becoming unbalanced and lost ground. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m.

MR GORMAN – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

DENMAN BLUE – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

RICHUNCLEMONEYBAGS – Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn. Momentarily steadied approaching the 200m when FULL DOSAGE shifted in. Went to the line largely untested thereafter when attempting a narrow run between that runner and the running rail when there was insufficent room to do so.

RED NEBULA – Stewards permitted Jockey P. Hamblin to be declared the replacement rider when Jockey R. Payne was indisposed following the previous event. Began awkwardly and bumped. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

UPTOWN LUCY – Began awkwardly.

MISSILES ARMED – Began awkwardly.

SAPPHIRE STEP – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

VALAR DOHAERIS – Hampered between runners on jumping.

CAMARILLO – Began awkwardly and bumped.

FULL DOSAGE – Rolled in approaching the 200m, momentarily tightening RICHUNCLEMONEYBAGS. Jockey S. Sweedman was advised to exercise greater care.

GHETTO – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4: GOONDIWINDI PICNIC RACES APRIL 13 CLASS B HANDICAP (1400m)

I’M A TINY DANCER – Took the crossing at the 1200m awkwardly, before being carried wider when trailing NOTQUITELIKEJACK which blundered badly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding the improved performance, Trainer R. Bowen stated the mare’s poor start in its previous two races had proved detrimental to its winning chances, and I’M A TINY DANCER had been further benefited by the engagement of a senior jockey in the above-forementioned event. Stewards noted the explanation.

NOTQUITELIKEJACK – Blundered badly over the 1200m crossing and lost ground when becoming significantly unbalanced. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m when attempting to improve. Bumped with DUSTINS rounding the home-turn. Trainer C. Smith advised that consideration would be given to the gelding’s immediate racing future and most likely advised the gelding had come to the end of its preparation.

ROMANTIC THOUGHTS – Raced wide and without cover until the 1000m.

LYNCHED – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight, before being obliged to shift out from heels to obtain clear running approaching the 100m.

CLUB ROLLER – Leaving the 1100m, when attempting to obtain the lead, shifted in when insufficiently clear of DUSTINS, before continuing into the line of REDVEDEV (NZ) who was obliged to steady from heels. Apprentice A. Graham was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding.

REDVEDEV (NZ) – Leaving the 1100m, obliged to steady from the heels of CLUB ROLLER. Over-raced for some distance thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

COLLAGEN QUEEN - Jockey W. O’Connell was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on seven occasions, two more than permitted prior to the 100m.

DUSTINS – Leaving the 1100m, obliged to steady from the heels of CLUB ROLLER. Bumped rounding the home-turn when attempting to obtain clear running.

Race 5: YOUNG GUNS QTIS BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP (1400m)

Prior to the running of this race, a delegation of Senior Jockeys and Stewards inspected the crossing at the 1200m following the incidents in Race 4, before being satisfied that the crossing was safe to continue.

LOUIE LA’JOY – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover from the 1000m, before commencing to give ground from the 600m. Jockey D. Baker was severely reprimanded under AR132(6)(c) for using his whip on two occasions when out of contention and advised against the practice when his mounts are failing to respond and not in the proximity of any other runner.

HALLSIDE HOT STUFF – Raced keenly in the early stages.

MOORABINDA MICK – When questioned regarding her tactics in the event, particularly in the middle stages in allowing her mount to maintain a fast tempo to the outside of HALLSIDE HOT STUFF, when there was an opportunity to allow her mount to relieve pressure and obtain cover, Apprentice A. Graham stated that the gelding benefits from maintaining a strong tempo and momentum throughout its run. Stewards noted the explanation, including that the gelding won the event.

THORNYCROFT (NZ) – Began awkwardly.

DREAMSEEKER – Raced keenly in the early stages. Jockey W. O’Connell was reprimanded under AR132(5) for using his whip on fifteen occasions, one more than permitted throughout the event.
