General:
Following a track inspection before race 1, the track was downgraded to a Soft 5. Following showers during the running of race 3, the track was further downgraded to a Soft 6.
 
After the running of race 3 the Clerk of the Course reported an issue with his horse and was unable to continue his duties. The duties were completed by the remaining Clerk.  
 
The following runners were examined pre-race by the Veterinarian due to having raced at Mackay on 14/02/2023 and passed fit to start;

Race 1: TRUENORTH EQUIPMENT HIRE BENCHMARK 50 Handicap 1460m
 
COLLOMBATTI – Hung in at the turn off the back straight.
 
LENNY ROCKET – Was fractious in the barriers. Cast an offisde front plate during the event.
 
DOVI’S DAY – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination which revealed a minor laceration to the nearside ear that was sustained on the float during transport to the track, the gelding was declared fit to start in the event by the Veterinarian. Slow to begin.
 
Race 2: GROWERS DAY 20TH MAY OPEN Plate 1000m
 
MUIRON – Jumped awkwardly. Apprentice Jockey I. Teh struck her left foot on the starting gates as the start was affected. I. Teh was examined after the event by the QAS officers and cleared to fulfill her remaining riding engagement.
 
HUNUA HANK (NZ) – Slow to begin.
 
SIRFINA – Trainer T. Cook reported that after arriving on course the gelding was showing signs of lameness in the near side foreleg. SIRFINA was declared a scratching at 1.24pm by order of the Stewards acting on Veterinary advice due to a stone bruise.
 
Race 3: 25 YEARS GROWERS RACEDAY BENCHMARK 55 Handicap 1000m
 
MISTER LARRABEE – Very slow to begin. A warning was issued regarding barrier manners.
 
COCO CUBER – Raced wide for the majority. Cast an offside front plate during the event.
 
ST MORITZ – Slow to begin.
 
CHEYENNE BEACH – Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages between SOGNI and OUR ADDICTION and was unable to be fully tested.
 
GOLDEN ATHENA – Jumped awkwardly. Shifted in and brushed the running rail shortly
after the start. Was unable to secure a clear run over the concluding stages.
 
THE LOUT – Slow into stride.
 
Race 4: TRUENORTH INTERIORS PTY LTD QTIS Maiden Plate 1180m
 
MISHANI PATRIOT – Slow into stride.
 
KINGMATE – Raced wide with cover from the 600m.
 
CHILENA – Collided with MERSEY GIRL shortly after the start. Jockey C. Lennon was questioned regarding the amount of times he applied the whip prior to the 100m. After reviewing the available patrol footage and hearing an explanation from C. Lennon no further action was taken.  
 
ROBBERY LASS – Refused to proceed to the start. Tailed off shortly after the start and took no competitive part in the event. Trainer K. Russell was advised that ROBBERY LASS must perform one satisfactory trial prior to the mares next race start, K. Russell advised Stewards that she intends to retire the mare after today’s performance.
 
MERSEY GIRL – Collided with CHILENA shortly after the start.
 
MISS STARLETTE – Raced wide from the 600m.
 
Race 5: LET’S RACE Class B Handicap 1180m
 
BIT OF FUN – Hung in for the majority of the event placing Apprentice Jockey J. Doolan at a disadvantage. J. Doolan advised Stewards that she believes the gelding may have gotten it’s tongue over the bit during running. Trainer J. Manzelmann was informed that a final warning was issued regarding the gelding hanging in.
 
IXELLES – Checked momentarily when crossed at the 1000m by MISHANI JEWEL. Checked again at the 150m when BIT OF FUN hung in despite the efforts of its rider.
 
RIVER DAISY – On returning to scale, prior to the declaration of correct weight, Trainer T. Cook reported that RIVER DAISY (Apprentice E. Molloy) had not had the pre-race ear muffs removed at the barriers. Mr Cook advised Stewards that he did not believe this had adversely effected the performance of the mare therefore Stewards declared correct weight and interviewed Starter J. McIntosch in relation to the matter. Mr McIntosch advised that he inadvertently missed the instruction to remove the gear prior to being loaded in the barriers as this was listed on his starters report.
 
MISHANI JEWEL – Apprentice Jockey B. Johnson was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for allowing her mount to shift in when not fully clear of IXELLES (N. Summers) at approximately the 1000m.
 
RIGHT BOWER – Jockey N. Day was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted in particular when at the 600m and racing in a rearward position he became pocketed when ON YOUR SKATES (P. Romeo) commenced to race forward to his outside. N. Day advised that he was held up and unable to improve until the 250m and RIGHT BOWER had run home fairly when clear. N. Day stated that he had informed trainer G. Hughes that he felt the gelding was not suited over today’s distance and required a longer journey. The explanation of N. Day was noted.
 
CHATILLY – Shortly after the start the mare commenced to race ungenerously and Jockey B. Thomson advised that the mare had attempted to buck. Trainer T. Simmons was advised that a warning was issued.
