STEWARDS REPORT BURDEKIN RACE CLUB SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2024 WEATHER – FineTRACK RATING – Soft 5; Downgraded to Soft 6 after Race 1.RAIL – True Entire CoursePENETROMETER – N/A OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – S. Nosworthy (Cadet) Stewards – R. Neal, J. McIntosh GENERAL Following the close of rider declarations for today’s meeting the Stewards noted that rider Scott Sheargold had been declared for both BABY GUNINESS and THE SHERPA in Race 3.After seeking an explanation from Mr Sheargold, it was determined that the Stewards would conduct an inquiry (by teleconference) into the dual engagement, with this inquiry to be held on Friday 28th June 2024 at 2:00pm. The timing of the inquiry to avoid connections the cost of transporting their horse to the meeting should no other rider be subsequently available. At the Stewards inquiry evidence was tendered by Mr Sheargold, Mr John Horan, the Managing owner of BABY GUINNESS; Mr Lindsay Hatch, trainer of BABY GUINNESS; and Mr Alby Molino, the trainer of THE SHERPA. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards determined that following discussions between Mr Horan and Mr Sheargold at both the Innisfail meeting of Saturday 22nd June 2024, and again the following day at the Townsville meeting on Sunday 23rd June 2024, that Mr Horan ought to have been able to rely on a confirmation he alleges was provided by Mr Sheargold. In consequence the Stewards found that the engagement on BABY GUINNESS has precedence over the subsequent engagement on THE SHERPA. A steward’s inquiry into the circumstances of Mr Sheargold accepting two riding engagements in one race has been adjourned to a time and date to be determined. The following horses were declared a late scratching at 12:00pm due to no rider being available: Race 3. No 3. THE SHERPA Race 1: PRESIDENT 1956-1959 OWEN RUDDICK QTIS Maiden Plate 1460 M The start to race 1 was delayed for a short period due to the barriers requiring attention following an electrical issue. MUMMIFICATION – Passing the 800m, lost contact with the field and was distanced at the finish. When questioned on the performance, apprentice jockey I. Teh stated that the gelding never travelled at any stage. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. SNUGGLE BANG YAHOO – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. ALLIGATOR ROSE – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. MISHANI PLATINUM – Raced three-wide in the early and middle stages. Following the running of Race 1, the track was downgraded to a Soft 6. Race 2: PRESIDENT 1946-1956 WILF DAVIES BENCHMARK 50 Handicap 1460 M EXCITE CHOO – Stewards questioned rider C Spry regarding his riding of beaten favourite EXCITE CHOO over the early stages of the race where the gelding settled well back in the running. In explanation jockey C. Spry stated that his instructions were to find a comfortable position and come with one finishing run, however after beginning only fairly EXCITE CHOO then struggled to maintain its position in the soft ground and in consequence settled further back than intended. Jockey Spry then stated that he had failed to obtain clear running from the 600 metres and had been disappointed for a run on two occasions in the final straight. Trainers representative L. Manzelmann confirmed the instructions provided. Given all circumstances jockey Spry’s explanation was noted. ANOTHER JACK – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. DAWN STRIKE – Brushed with DEFROSTED passing the 200 metres. LINE OF KINGS – Shifted in at the start hampering NOTHIN’ BUT LOOKS. DEFROSTED – Laid out when struck with the whip passing the 200 metres brushing with DAWN STRIKE. Continued to lay out and near the 50 metres, shifted out and inconvenienced EXCITE CHOO which in turn shifted out and brushed with MISS WHITE. MISS WHITE – Brushed with another runner near the 50 metres. VOLARCHI – Raced wide throughout. NOTHIN’ BUT LOOKS – Hampered at the start. Race 3: PRESIDENT 1930-1945 VICTOR HANSON BENCHMARK 55 Handicap PRIVATE CHEETAH – Shifted out at the start and bumped with BRAZEN BRECCIA. Raced wide with cover without. Held up for a short distance rounding the home turn. THE SHERPA – Declared a late scratching at 12:00pm due to no other rider being available. BABY GUINNESS - From an outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Passing the 700 metres, bumped with FERUS. Held up for a short distance rounding the home turn. BRAZEN BRECCIA – Bumped at the start. Raced wide without cover throughout. FERUS – Passing the 700 metres, bumped with BABY GUINNESS. SENSATIONABULL – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. WICKLOW LASS (NZ) – Upon returning to scale, jockey D. Smith stated that when transitioning onto to the course proper, WICKLOW LASS (NZ) preceded to change stride momentarily and lost ground as a result. ISSHEGREY - Was declared a late scratching at 2:35pm after Trainer T. Williams advised he had struck motor vehicle issues and would be unable to arrive on course by start time of Race 3. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on ISSHEGREY be refunded with the following deductions to apply- 1st BABY GUINNESS 8c win, 9c place.2nd SENSATIONABULL 9c place3rd HARVESTA 9c place Race 4: PRESIDENT 1961-1963 GELLY PIVA BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1000 M GAMBOA – Raced wide throughout. CHICKERARTIE – Passing the 150 metres, shifted in momentarily restricting the running room of GREENHEART (NZ) before being corrected by its rider. Jockey S. Sheargold was reminded of his obligations of shifting ground when in similar circumstances. GREENHEART (NZ) – Contacted the side of the barrier on jumping and was slow into stride. Hampered shortly after the start when ZI WIN shifted out. Raced in restricted room for a short distance passing the 150 metres. MISHANI MYSTIQUE – Raced wide throughout. ZI WIN – Shifted out shortly after the start hampering GREENHEART (NZ). Raced greenly approaching the winning post. SHEEZ MARVELLOUS – Began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, improved onto the heels of ZI WIN and had to be steadied. Race 5: PRESIDENT 1963-1965 JOCK KELLY BENCHMARK 45 Handicap 1000 M SMART THINKER – Raced wide throughout. RUGGED ROY – Reared at the start and lost considerable ground. CARVETI – A post-race veterinary examination revealed superficial lesions to the hind legs consistent to being galloped on. SILENT ANGEL - Passing the 700 metres, improved onto the heels of CARVETI and had to be steadied. TORQUE NOWOR NEVER – Raced wide with cover throughout. SWAHILI MAI – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination having not raced for an extended period and was passed fit to race. Was declared a late scratching at 4:24pm after becoming cast in the barriers. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on SWAHILI MAI be refunded with the following deductions to apply- 1st PARA PARK CHANCE 16c win, 14c place.2nd SILENT ANGEL 14c place3rd OLD FASHIONED ROSE 14c place Trainer C. Morrison was advised that SWAHILI MAI must trial satisfactorily prior to racing again. Correct weight was delayed allowing the connections of MISS SHALAA to review the photo finish for 4th placing. Once satisfied, correct weight was declared on the judges’ semaphored numbers.
