A 12 minute delay while horses being loaded. Following the race Jockeys claimed that the delay was caused by lack of experience of the barrier staff. L Critoph stated that his mount had raced greenly on the tight track.

The rider of KEEN MATCH, K Birse, completed the course with only his left foot in the stirrups, After passing the post he was dislodged from the horse and was conveyed to the Longreach Hospital for treatment. Bonnie Crane (DARTOUT) and L Critoph (LOST BUT FOUND) both claimed they were not ready when the gates opened as they had noted that K Birse was having trouble with his mount which was sitting down in the boxes. All riders claimed to have heard K Birse calling for assistance quite clearly. Stewards asked Mr T Hoad to step aside and P Spendelove, the Longreach starter, completed the meeting.
