STEWARDS REPORT

INJUNE RACE CLUB

INJUNE - SATURDAY 8TH JUNE 2024

WEATHER – FINE      TRACK RATING – DIRT         RAIL – TRUE

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – D. MacDonald

GENERAL

When no riders were available, the following runners were declared late scratchings on Stewards’ orders:
Race 3 – OLY BOOM, ASHIKO BAY
Race 4 – VALENTINO TEASE, THE STONE MASON
Race 5 – VILLADEN

Given the limited number of riders attending the meeting, Stewards accepted the explanation for late declarations throughout the meeting.

Race 1: LANGTON RURAL SERVICES / RURAL INSURANCE SERVICES QTIS MAIDEN PLATE (1000m)

THE UPRISING – Began awkwardly. When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey C. Rogers stated in her opinion, the gelding failed to handle the firmer track conditions. She further added the gelding commenced to give ground from the 600m and proved disappointing when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

ABOUT RIGHT – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m when attempting to improve.

VERALISE – Laid out rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight.

MEDITERRANEAN MISS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

THE BELL JAR – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

Race 2: SUFFCON / IOR PETROLEUM BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP (1000m)

The running of this race was delayed approximately 7 minutes due to Apprentice A. Graham being dislodged from CATALYSE enroute to the barriers and when a number of runners proved difficult to load.

RUSHEEN – Bumped on jumping.

LIMITED REALITY – Began awkwardly. Shifted out and around heels approaching the 200m to obtain clear running. Jockey N. Fazackerley stated the gelding was one-paced throughout the event and would be better suited over further distances.

BONNIE EV – Declared a late scratching at 1:47pm after refusing to load. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared that all monetary investments placed on BONNIE EV be refunded with the following deductions to apply:

1st – 12c win, 12c place.
2nd – 12c place
3rd – 12c place

Trainer W. Baker was advised a warning would be placed on the mare’s record.

JOEY JAWS (NZ) – Began awkwardly and bumped. Tightened passing the winning post and steadied when CATALYSE shifted in.

CATALYSE – Proved reluctant to proceed to the start before dislodging Apprentice A. Graham. Recaptured a short distance later and underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed fit to start. Apprentice Graham was examined by QAS officers and deemed fit to fulfill her remaining engagements. Trainer W. Baker was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record. Stewards granted permission for the gelding to race without a tongue-tie due to the fractious behaviour of the gelding. Began only fairly from the wide barrier and subsequently settled further back than may have been expected. Improved onto the heels of SAVVY SONG approaching the 900m and obliged to steady. Shifted in passing the winning post tightening JOEY JAWS (NZ) onto the running rail who was obliged to steady. Apprentice Graham was advised to exercise greater care. When questioned regarding the performance, Apprentice A. Graham stated the gelding was better suited when able to lead and dictate in events, and the wide barrier had proved detrimental to obtaining a more forward position. She further added, in her opinion, the gelding may have not appreciated the firmer track conditions, and that she wasn’t disappointed in the overall performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SAVVY SONG – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 3: INJUNE CYPRESS / BLACK TOYOTA / SENEX ENERGY BENCHMARK 55 Handicap (1200m)

Correct weight was delayed when it was advised to Stewards that the photo-finish system had failed. Once satisfied that the relevant films corresponded to the Judges’ results, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

BLERIOT – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

REAL HUSSEY – Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn. Shifted in passing the winning post tightening MISS DARTMOUTH (NZ) who was obliged to steady from heels. Apprentice A. Graham was advised to exercise greater care.

MANIC LIGHT – Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid out leaving the 1000m carrying MURPHY’S RIVER wider on the track.

PACKAGE – Bumped on jumping.

LEGISLATE – Lost its off-fore plate on arrival on-course which necessitated remedial work. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed fit to start. Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MURPHY’S RIVER – Began awkwardly and bumped. Carried wider by MANIC LIGHT leaving the 1000m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

HARAMAIN – Raced wide and without cover throughout the early and middle stages before commencing to give ground approaching the 400m. Finished tailed off. Apprentice B. Moffat advised after being caught wide in the early stages, the gelding, which was first-up for the preparation had been required to do too much early work to obtain a forward position which proved detrimental to its finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4: NUTRIEN AG SOLUTIONS BENCHMARK 50 HANDICAP (1400m)

Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view the photo finish for first, before being satisfied that a margin was present. Further, prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards considered an objection lodged by connections of second placegetter (SAINT MARTIN) against first placegetter (PERFECT POINT) alleging interference approaching the 400m and in the home straight. After taking evidence from both parties, and viewing the relevant footage, it was established that leaving the 400m, PERFECT POINT had shifted out to improve, and in doing so had bumped SAINT MARTIN carrying that runner wider on the track, before again being carried wider rounding the home-turn. However, bearing in mind the manner in which both runners finished off the event, and that Apprentice A. Graham (SAINT MARTIN) was afforded full opportunity to test her mount under pressure, and that the marginal brush in the home straight in the Stewards’ opinion had been a result of SAINT MARTIN laying in, Stewards could not comfortably be satisfied that SAINT MARTIN would have finished in advance of PERFECT POINT and subsequently dismissed the protest.

MURION – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed fit to start. Slow to begin. Jockey C. Rogers advised the gelding was inclined to lay-out throughout the event and may not have appreciated the firmer track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-hindleg. Trainer C. Rogers was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again.

SAINT MARTIN – Bumped and carried wider approaching the 400m when PERFECT POINT attempted to improve. Carried wider rounding the home-turn. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

HEAT – Raced keenly in the early stages. Shifted out and around heels approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.

PERFECT POINT – Began only fairly. Bumped approaching the 400m when attempting to obtain clear running. Brushed approaching the 100m when SAINT MARTIN laid in.

CLUB ROLLER – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

FORGED IN STONE – Began awkwardly resulting in Apprentice M. Mankelow losing her off-side iron before regaining its use some distance later. Raced wide and without cover in the early stages before obtaining the lead at the 900m. Apprentice Mankelow was reminded of her obligations under AR131(b) to ride her mounts out fully to the finish.

MR DEMOLITION – Jockey N. Fazackerley was permitted to ride 0.5kg over the allotted weight of 58kg. Jockey Fazackerley was subsequently fined $100 under AR190(1). Raced keenly on heels for some distance near the 1000m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 5: 2024 SANTOS INJUNE CUP OPEN HANDICAP (1400m)

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, it was established that the pre-race earmuffs, part of the declared gear of PESHWA had failed to be removed prior to the start being effected. After consideration with Trainer B. Waldron, and the effect this may have had on the performance on the gelding, Stewards were ultimately required under AR204 to declare PESHWA as a runner, noting its fourth-place finish in the event. Apprentice A. Graham and the official Starter of the event were admonished and advised to ensure that far greater care was taken in relation to the removal of pre-race gear.

NICK THE SKIP – Jockey N. Fazackerley advised the gelding became under heavy pressure leaving the 500m and proved disappointing thereafter. He further advised the gelding may have come to the end of its preparation. Stewards intend to follow up with the C. Baker stable regarding the post-race condition and future plans of the gelding.

THE GENERAL (NZ) – Began only fairly. Held-up for clear running approaching the 100m and obliged to be shifted to the inside of LIP SIP SUK to obtain clear running.

LIP SIP SUK – From the wide barrier began only fairly and subsequently settled further back than may have been expected. Raced wide and without cover from the 1000m. Leaving the 200m, shifted out from behind the heels of HANOVER SQUARE to obtain clear running. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
