SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
From Doomben 14.12.11:
Race 2 – Trainer L. Birchley advised that whilst he was not overly disappointed with the performance of MESTARI (C. Munce) in that it was the gelding’s first start after a short break, he was confident of further improvement from that outing. He added that following further examinations, no abnormalities were detected and he would continue with the horse’s preparation.
Race 3 – Trainer L. Birchley advised that he was not entirely disappointed with the performance of VEICO (G. Colless) as it was the filly’s first start back from a spell and carried 58kg and he expected the horse to take benefit from the run.
Race 4 – Trainer R. Heathcote reported that further examinations of FUNDED (J. Byrne) revealed no abnormalities and he would now experiment with a change of gear for future starts.
Race 5 – Trainer L. Birchley advised that he was disappointed with the performance of DANISH WHISKEY (C. Munce) and as a result the horse has been sent for an immediate spell.
Race 1: MURPHY MAYHEM C,G&E MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
1st – Call Me Cobber 2nd – Myelliot 3rd – Captain Fastbuck 4th – Equally Optimistic
SIR JOEL (Matthew Palmer) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start EQUALLY OPTIMISTIC (B. Stewart) had to be checked when tightened for room between BLACK PEGASUS (A. Badger) and WARSHIP (M. Hellyer), which was taken out by CALL ME COBBER (J. Brown), which shifted out.
MYELLIOT (B. Looker) overraced during the early stages.
WARSHIP, which overraced during the early stages, had to be checked from the heels of CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (J. Taylor) approaching the 800m and as a result lost ground and shifted out forcing BLACK PEGASUS wider on the track. BLACK PEGASUS, which raced greenly throughout the event, then raced wide until near the 400m.
Near the 200m EUREKA STRIKE (R. McMahon), when attempting a run between ALWAYS LATE (J. Byrne) and SIR JOEL, which shifted out under pressure, became awkward and shifted out causing ALWAYS LATE to become unbalanced.
Trainer N. Doyle advised that in view of the poor performance of BLACK PEGASUS today, he would review the gelding’s racing future. Stewards advised Mr Doyle that given the horse’s greenness, along with the poor performance, BLACK PEGASUS would be required to satisfactorily barrier trial prior to its next start.
A post-race veterinary examination of SIR JOEL revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the near fore cannon consistent with being galloped on.
Race 2: FORCE 10 FIASCO F&M MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
1st – Depasse 2nd – Hill And Grace 3rd – Our Little Missy 4th – A Snip Of Gold
The start of the race was delayed when CROWN SECRET (J. Brown) was reluctant to proceed to the barriers.
A further delay to the start was caused when A SNIP OF GOLD (J. Warrington) underwent a veterinary examination after making heavy contact with the outside running rail. A SNIP OF GOLD was cleared to start. The start was further delayed when A SNIP OF GOLD proved difficult to load.
A SNIP OF GOLD was slow to begin.
SHANGHAI DESIRE (P. Hammersley) was tightened for room at the start between COUGAR FISH (D. Griffin) and MECENE ROSE (G. Colless), which shifted out. In this incident both SHANGHAI DESIRE and COUGAR FISH became unbalanced.
ELVSTROEM ROSE (B. Stewart) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with DAZZLING DISPLAY (R. McMahon).
Shortly after the start CROWN SECRET was steadied when tightened for room between OUR LITTLE MISSY (J. Taylor), which shifted in, and RUBY QUALO (R. Wiggins), which shifted out.
Near the 1000m CROWN SECRET was forced to steady to avoid the heels of A SNIP OF GOLD, which shifted in. Jockey J. Warrington (A SNIP OF GOLD) was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
COUGAR FISH overraced during the early stages and had to be steadied from heels approaching the 800m.
RUBY QUALO, OUR LITTLE MISSY and HILL AND GRACE (Matthew Palmer) raced wide throughout.
Leaving the 600m A SNIP OF GOLD improved on to the heels of MISS TURLINGTON (J. Byrne) and had to be steadied.
DEPASSE (B. Looker), which shifted wider from the 600m in order to improve, hung out and raced wide from that point onwards.
Approaching the 400m COSSOTTO (S. Galloway), which had been held up from the 500m, improved on to the heels of ELVSTROEM ROSE and had to be steadied. COSSOTTO continued to be held up until leaving the 300m.
DAZZLING DISPLAY was held up rounding the home turn and was unable to secure clear running at any point of the home straight and went to the line without being fully tested.
A SNIP OF GOLD was held up rounding the home turn until approaching the 100m.
SHANGHAI DESIRE, which was held up rounding the home turn, was then hampered leaving the 200m when tightened between COUGAR FISH and RUBY QUALO, which was taken in by A SNIP OF GOLD, which shifted in to secure clear running after steadying from the heels of OUR LITTLE MISSY.
Stewards sought an explanation from B. Stewart regarding the below market performance of ELVSTROEM ROSE. Jockey Stewart stated that the filly was under pressure prior to and rounding the home turn and was also unable to secure clear running in the early stages of the home straight and he was of the view that the filly ran on only fairly. Trainer R. Heathcote stated that he had instructed jockey Stewart to ride the horse vigorously to make use of its inside alley, however with hindsight the filly may not have appreciated being ridden in this manner and this may have had a detrimental effect on the overall performance. post-race veterinary examination of ELVSTROEM ROSE revealed no abnormalities.
G. Colless reported that MECENE ROSE raced awkwardly throughout the event and in his opinion did not feel comfortable in its action. A post-race veterinary examination of MECENE ROSE revealed no abnormalities.
Race 3: CANSTRUCT KAOS QTIS 3YO CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1100M
1st – Skater Dude 2nd – High On Believing 3rd – Wishbone Jack 4th – Boodles’n’boodles
Approaching the 800m WISHBONE JACK (R. McMahon) was tightened for room when racing to the inside of HIGH ON BELIEVING (C. Munce), which shifted in and away from FLAMMABLE (A. Best), which shifted in slightly.
ZED MAN (L. Cheshire) and FLAMMABLE raced wide throughout.
EASY SUCCESSFUL (J. Byrne) was held up rounding the home turn.
An inquiry was opened into the reason why EASY SUCCESSFUL had to be steadied near the 300m and again near the 100m. After hearing evidence from the riders concerned and viewing the film, it was established that leaving the 200m EASY SUCCESSFUL had to be steadied when crowded for room between ZED MAN (L. Cheshire) and RARE QUALITY (G. Colless), which became unbalanced and shifted out and away from BOODLES’N’BOODLES (M. Hellyer). It was further established that approaching the 100m EASY SUCCESSFUL was disappointed for a run between ZED MAN and RARE QUALITY, which was taken out by HIGH ON BELIEVING, which shifted out and away from BOODLES’N’BOODLES, which also shifted out slightly. As no one rider could be deemed responsible for the incidents, no further action was taken.
Race 4: FILLIES N COLTS CUP MAIDEN H’CAP – 1690M
1st – Auburn Gold 2nd – Bakobi 3rd – Special And Grand 4th – Black Leg Bay
FEROCIOUS DIVA (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with BLACK LEG BAY (S. Bogenhuber), causing both horses to become unbalanced and lose ground.
SPECIAL AND GRAND (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly, hampering both AUBURN GOLD (R. McMahon) and HI CODY (J. Taylor).
HI CODY overraced in the early and middle stages and at a point approaching the 800m shifted out to avoid heels and raced wide from that point onwards.
BLACK LEG BAY and TWINKLETON (L. Cheshire) both shifted out to improve leaving the 800m and raced wide from that point onwards.
Leaving the 500m BLACK LEG BAY, HI CODY and TERETOA (C. Munce) were all forced wider when racing to the outside of SPECIAL AND GRAND, which shifted out to improve.
Approaching the 400m FEROCIOUS DIVA, which had commenced to yield ground, shifted in, making contact with BOUND FOR ABUDHABI (A. Mundy).
Over the concluding stages G. Colless (SPECIAL AND GRAND) stopped riding when placed in restricted room between BAKOBI (D. Griffin) and AUBURN GOLD which shifted in.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the disappointing performance of FEROCIOUS DIVA. Jockey Byrne stated that after not beginning well, the filly was forced to race further back in the field than anticipated but he was not of the view that this had a detrimental effect on the performance. He added that he was able to improve into the race from the 700m, however was under severe pressure leaving the 600m and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer S. Ryan advised that in light of today’s disappointing performance he would now send the filly for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination of FEROCIOUS DIVA revealed no significant abnormalities.
D. Griffin, the rider of BAKOBI, was reminded of his obligation not to use his whip excessively in a backhand manner.
Race 5: STRATEGIX ECO DRIVER CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1690M
1st – Sir Stanley 2nd – Meat Head 3rd – Explorer Club 4th – Flying Archangel
MEAT HEAD (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly and shortly after the start had to be steadied from the heels of VERTIGO (R. McMahon).
PORTUGUESE (J. Stanley) was tightened for room at the start between RUFFINO (B. Stewart) and SAZERAC (A. Pattillo), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 1500m MEAT HEAD became awkward and was steadied when momentarily tightened for room between MINYA MAI (Michael Palmer) and HAPPY TO WIN (E. Kehoe), which shifted in.
Near the 1400m both MEAT HEAD and HAPPY TO WIN were steadied when racing in restricted room between MINYA MAI and EXPLORER CLUB (G. Geran), which shifted in. G. Geran was reprimanded for this incident.
Leaving the 1400m HAPPY TO WIN, which was positioned wide on the track, was ridden forward to assume a position outside the lead near the 1100m.
Jockey D. Griffin reported that SEEYAMONDAY was awkward in its action throughout the event and proved very disappointing over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of SEEYAMONDAY revealed no significant abnormalities.
Jockey B. Stewart was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of RUFFINO. He stated that the mare was under pressure to improve into the race prior to the 700m and he was forced to ride vigorously when rounding the home turn and added that the mare was doing its best work over the concluding stages. He added that RUFFINO performed like a horse looking for races over longer distances.
When questioned regarding the performance of PORTUGUESE, which finished a distant last. Jockey Stanley stated that the gelding hung out throughout the event and this caused him to be unable to place pressure on the horse from the 500m. Stewards will advise trainer G. Ryan that PORTUGUESE will be required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next start.
Race 6: ZUPPS/HIGER BUS & COACH CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Flagges Flying 2nd – Hangar Seven 3rd – Pensive Dream 4th – Fourth Of July
As M. Hellyer had dual engagements in this event, A. Mundy was substituted as the rider of CAR THREE. M. Hellyer was fined $100 under AR. 85B.
Trainer P. Strong advised that due to TIMELY SURPRISE (J. Byrne) drawing the outside barrier, it will be the intention to have the horse ridden back in the field in an effort to find a position closer to the rail, which is in contrast to its previous run at Doomben when it led.
CAR THREE (A. Mundy), SOLAR HEART (B. Stewart) and WAITING ROOM (M. Hellyer) were all slow to begin.
SHADY OUTFIT (N. Tomizawa) overraced during the early and middle stages and when the pace slackened approaching the 800m had to be checked from the heels of PENSIVE DREAM (D. Griffin).
Near the 700m HANGAR SEVEN (R. Wiggins) improved on to the heels of FLAGGES FLYING (J. Taylor) and blundered.
MOLLY'S WAY (C. Munce), UNPUBLISHED CRITIC (A. Pattillo) and KIALLA (J. Stanley) all raced wide throughout.
SHADY OUTFIT was held up rounding the home turn.
TIMELY SURPRISE hung out rounding the home turn.
MOLLY'S WAY hung out rounding the home turn and in the home straight, causing C. Munce to be unable to fully test his mount.
SECRETS REVEALED (R. McMahon) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Leaving the 300m HANGAR SEVEN was disappointed for a run between MOLLY'S WAY and UNPUBLISHED CRITIC, and as a result had to be steadied and shift back to the inside.
Jockey G. Colless, the rider of MARCULOO, reported to stewards that in his opinion the horse raced very keenly in today’s event due to being fresh as it was having its first start back from a spell. He added that it was his opinion that this resulted in the mare not running out a strong 1200m. A post-race veterinary examination of MARCULOO revealed no significant findings.
Race 7: QUEENSLAND BUS INDUSTRY COUNCIL CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1350M
1st – Hidden Babe 2nd – Temple Court 3rd – Tail And All 4th – Sweet Reward

Stewards gave trainer M. Palmer permission to race INTADOM (D. Griffin) without a nasal strip after he reported that it had been damaged.
HANDBAG (J. Taylor), which was fractious in the barriers and got its foot caught between the gates, was a late scratching at 4.51 p.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice that the horse was lame in the near hind leg. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on HANDBAG be refunded, with the following deductions to successful wagers to apply:
16 cents in the dollar for the Win – HIDDEN BABE
15 cents in the dollar for place of winner - HIDDEN BABE
13 cents in the dollar for 2nd place - TEMPLE COURT
13 cents in the dollar for 3rd place – TAIL AND ALL
Trainer D. Lawlor will be advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for HANDBAG prior to its next start.
Shortly after the start KUMALI (J. Warrington), which was being ridden aggressively to take up a forward position, commenced to race ungenerously and shifted out abruptly, losing ground, and was then forced to race wide before being ridden forward to assume a position outside the lead leaving the 700m. Trainer J. Dann was advised that the mare would be required to jump out prior to its next start.
TEMPLE COURT (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.
OUR TRIPLE TREAT (M. Hellyer) and CRAZY WAYS (E. Kehoe) raced wide throughout.
Leaving the 900m LAVENDI (N. Tomizawa) improved on to heels and had to be steadied. SWEET REWARD (R. Wiggins), which was following, was also steadied as a result and shifted wider on the track, forcing CRAZY WAYS wider.
Leaving the 800m DAMAGE AND BLUE (J. Byrne) commenced to hang out and had to be checked from the heels of HIDDEN BABE (C. Munce).
TEMPLE COURT shifted out to improve approaching the 400m and in doing so made contact with GRAND HOMME (S. Bogenhuber) resulting in GRAND HOMME hanging out rounding the home turn.
Approaching the 400m LAVENDI shifted out to improve and in doing so forced OUR TRIPLE TREAT wider on the track.
Leaving the 300m LAVENDI had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SWEET REWARD, which shifted out to obtain clear running. R. Wiggins (SWEET REWARD) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
