An inspection of  the track by stewards at approximately 11.20 am revealed a section at the mouth  of the 1350m shute that was deemed very wet and unsafe to race over. After consulting with Ipswich Club officials, stewards ordered that the running rail be moved in at least 2 metres from the 1350m shute and moved in 2 metres from the point on the course proper between the 1300m and 970m.

Prior to Race 1 when the work had been completed, stewards and a delegation  of senior riders revisited the section and gave their approval with the remedial work done.

Appo, rider of STORMY GREY, was reprimanded and advised to show greater care when shifting ground.   When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, jockey J. Byrne explained that he steadied after being slightly hampered in the early stages he got shuffled back to a rearward position  with the slow tempo. He added that at a point passing the 800 no opportunity arose for him to improve on the back of another runner and therefore he elected to wait and not expose his mount to racing wide too early and was unable to gain clear running until a point rounding the home turn.  He stated that the gelding ran on well over the concluding stages.

SIPIN'BUNDY – Slow into stride and then overraced severely when restrained at the rear of the field until a point approaching the 1200m where jockey Bogenhuber elected to improve 3 wide and  obtain a position 3 wide without cover midfield passing the 1100m.
