Race 1: BLACKHANDERS SOCIAL CLUB MAIDEN H'CAP – 2180M

SCANDALS – Inconvenienced near the 1400m when the pace slowed. When questioned regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance, trainer C. Allardyce stated that she was somewhat surprised with the gelding’s success, however she did expect a forward showing as it was its first attempt at a step up to a more suitable distance. The explanation was noted.

MAJESTIC SHADOW – Crowded for room on the home turn.

SIR PLUCKA – Apprentice N. Summers pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137(d) in that after the 1400m she excessively reduced the speed of her horse, having established a comfortable lead, and in doing so did not maintain her position, resulting in ROOSTER HUNTER, which was following, striking that horse’s heels and having to be checked and shifted out. As a consequence, SCANDALS, which was following ROOSTER HUNTER, was also inconvenienced. Apprentice Summers’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 16 July and expire at midnight on Friday 28 July 2017. Ms Summers was further questioned regarding her tactics and riding of SIR PLUCKA. She said she was instructed to endeavour to ride to the lead, however if the horse was contested in doing so, she would be expected to allow other runners to cross as it was the horse’s first attempt at the distance. Ms Summers explained that after the crossing near the 1500m the horse failed to maintain its tempo, resulting in it losing ground, which resulted in the horse racing in a worse than midfield position by the 1000m. Ms Summers further explained that after the 800m she endeavoured to shift the horse away from the rail as in her opinion the horse would perform better if it was allowed to finish down the outside of the track. Ms Summers was advised that her ride in the early and middle stages lacked judgment and further that the tactics she adopted after the 800m by shifting away from the rail were disadvantageous to her mount’s chances.

ROOSTER HUNTER – Struck heels, had to be checked and shifted out after the 1400m when the pace slowed.

AVERNA MOUNTAIN – Fell near the 700m. An inquiry into the reasons for the fall was opened and initial evidence was taken from B. Stewart (SCANDALS), M. Hellyer (EKRAARSONIC), L. Dittman (STREET COMIC) and W. D’Avila (BIG BAD JOHN). As apprentice G. Mitchell had been transported to hospital, the inquiry was adjourned to a later date. Riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 2: BACKFATTA CLASS 2 H'CAP – 2180M

FASHION SAGA struck the fence whilst proceeding to the barriers and fell. On the advice of the veterinary surgeon that the mare had sustained a laceration to the hind leg, stewards declared FASHION SAGA a late scratching at 1:26 pm. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on FASHION SAGA be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 1:26 pm:

5 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets
4 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets for the win
9 cents in the dollar on the face value of 2nd place bets
9 cents in the dollar on the face value of 3rd place bets

GYPSY WILD – Hung out throughout.

MR MALU – Connections advised that due to drawing the inside barrier the horse would be ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

Race 3: GRANDVIEW STUD MAIDEN H'CAP – 1350M

EYERONIC – Raced three wide without cover. Checked severely after the 400m and shifted out abruptly.

STREETSUSS – Hung out throughout. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s racing manners.

GOLDEN SHEAF – Trainer D. Vandyke advised that the horse, which was ridden forward and contested the lead at its previous start, would be ridden off the speed today if circumstances permit. The horse settled in a midfield position. Rider M. Hellyer pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 400m, whilst riding his mount along, he improved on to the heels of CASINO EVIL, resulting in him having to shift his mount out abruptly to avoid that horse’s heels, and as a consequence both EYERONIC and TURQUOISE had to be severely checked. M. Hellyer’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 days, to commence at midnight on Thursday 27 July, being the expiration of a suspension incurred in NSW at the Grafton meeting on 13 July, and expire at midnight on Tuesday 8 August 2017.

ROMAN RUBY – Bounded at the start.

BRIGHTEN MY DAY – As the horse’s performance was considered unsatisfactory, trainer R. Litton was advised that the filly would be required to trial competitively prior to being permitted to race again.
