Race 1: GRANDVIEW STUD C,G&E MAIDEN H'CAP – 1020M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to view the patrol footage of the start of the race to determine whether GALLANT SAGA was afforded a fair start. On viewing the videos it was evident that GALLANT SAGA reared as the start was effected, its head making heavy contact with the crossbar and unbalancing rider J. Lloyd, who was dislodged. The horse subsequently followed the field riderless. Upon being recaptured and returning to the enclosure, it was noted that the gelding was bleeding from both nostrils. A post-race veterinary examination confirmed the presence of blood in both nostrils as a result of external trauma. Trainer P. Duncan was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s barrier manners. J. Lloyd was examined by ambulance officers and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

Lacy reported at scale that each time she attempted to improve on the horse, which raced greenly throughout, the colt was inclined to shift ground and as a result she was prevented from fully testing her mount over the final stages. Trainer T. Webb was advised that a warning would be placed on horse’s racing manners.

MARVELOOS – Began awkwardly. Had a tendency to hang out throughout the event, placing its rider in some difficulty. A post-race examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer B. Ahrens advised stewards that he would make alterations to the horse’s gear prior to its next start, however Mr Ahrens was nonetheless advised that the mare must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before racing again.

Race 3: CITY OF IPSWICH QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1700M

KIRIN’S LAD – Had to be steadied momentarily rounding the home turn when tightened for room between LUCY LE ROC and BRICKHALL, which shifted out slightly.

MY CRIMSON LAD – Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer M. Reynolds for the late declaration of Beau Appo as rider.

Race 5: SCHWEPPES CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1530M

THE GRINGO – When questioned regarding the instructions given to jockey J. Lloyd, trainer P. Gardner advised that it was the intention to have the horse ridden in a forward position, however he would be content if the horse obtained cover as it was resuming today from a long spell. When questioned, J. Lloyd stated that from the 1 barrier the gelding began fairly and held the inside running rounding the first turn and he was quite comfortable settling in the lead. He said that if another runner wanted to assume the lead passing the 1300m he would have relinquished that position, however as the tempo was only moderate and as DUBLEO’S LAD raced outside his mount without applying any pressure, he was happy to remain in that position. Stewards noted his comments.

ASTRONOMIC – Held up for clear running after rounding the home turn and was unable to obtain clear running for the entire straight and as a result went to the line without being fully tested.

CAPTAIN TREASURE – Disappointed for a run approaching the 100m and went to the lint without being fully tested.

PRIEST’S ROAD – Raced wide without cover throughout.

GUADALUPE – Began awkwardly and lost some ground. Jockey R. Fradd reported that the horse put in a number of awkward strides in the home straight and as a result stewards ordered that the horse undergo a veterinary examination, which revealed the mare to be lame in the off foreleg.

CAPE DENISON – Hampered between runners on jumping. When questioned regarding the tactics she adopted after passing the 600m, apprentice S. Lacy explained that the mare was only travelling fairly and she elected to look for an inside run and ride for luck. She said that upon entering the straight she was disappointed for a run and was held up until approximately the 70m where she obtained clear running and then her mount was not fully tested in the run to the line as she felt the mare was improving at a rate to place herself in a position where she would be awkwardly placed at the heels of runners ahead of her. Co-trainer Mr J. Symons agreed with apprentice Lacy’s explanation. Stewards, however, were of the view that apprentice Lacy made an error of judgment approaching the home turn and felt there may have been an opportunity to come to the outside which would have given the mare a chance to obtain clear running and finish the race off. Stewards accepted apprentice Lacy’s explanation for her lack of vigour over the final stages. Stewards found that even though her ride may have been an error of judgment, it was not to a point to be culpable under the rules, however advised apprentice Lacy that as she is now a metropolitan apprentice, she would be expected to show better judgment than she did in her riding of CAPE DENISON. Stewards elected to take no further action but will peruse betting activity on the event and should anything come to light, the inquiry would be reopened.

ROSDANE – Commenced to hang out after rounding the first turn at the 1350m and continued to do so for the remainder of the event. Trainer J. Noud was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s racing manners.

Race 6: RAY WHITE IPSWICH RATINGS BAND 0-70 H'CAP – 1700M

HARADIFY – Reared as the start was effected and lost ground.

ROGALI – Raced in restricted room rounding the home turn when STEAL A DIAMOND laid in despite the efforts of its rider.

CHARLES THE THIRD – Slow to begin.

BAY RAIDER – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

Race 7: THE QLD TIMES CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1350M

JACQUERIC – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

POSITIVE QUEST – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, apprentice C. Bayliss stated that he had been instructed to lead, which the mare did without being unduly pressured. He added that after obtaining the lead shortly after the start, the mare commenced to overrace and despite his efforts on a number of occasions to restrain the horse and slacken the speed, the mare continued to overrace before tiring in the home straight and finishing a distant last. When questioned, trainer H. Page stated that it had been the stable’s intention to see if the horse would settle in the lead stepping up over a longer distance, however she agreed with the comments of apprentice Bayliss that the horse overraced. She indicated that she would now be discussing the horse’s immediate racing future with the owners with a view to perhaps retiring the mare. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
