QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT IPSWICH TURF CLUB – SATURDAY 13 JANUARY 2018 WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING – GOOD 4/GOOD 3 (12 noon) RAIL – 2.5MPENETROMETER – 4.3 OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – N. BoyleStewards – J. Williamson, C. Albrecht, C. FedrickClerk of Scales – L. HicksJudge – P. Chilton, B. WilsonVeterinarian – Dr C. Wain, Dr J. Cawdell-SmithSwab Attendants – R. Gonchee, R. BurchmannStarter – S. Tou, C. WallaceStewards Secretary – W. Ostrofski GENERAL Given the predicted forecast, this meeting was conducted under Level 1(b) of the QRIC Hot Weather Policy. As EVER THE OPTIMUS (Race 3) and SHOW ME MAGIC (Race 7) had not raced for more than 12 months, they underwent pre-race veterinary examinations and were cleared to start. Race 1: THE WISHART FAMILY QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1000M CHAMPAGNE GARDEN – Slow to begin. DANGEROUS DINOZZO – Began awkwardly, attempted to buck for a few strides, then failed to muster speed, raced greenly throughout and tailed off. When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, N. Day stated that in his opinion the gelding was green and struggling to be competitive in today’s event. Following the race trainer P. Butterworth indicated that the gelding would now be sent for a spell. However, stewards advised Mr Butterworth that a warning would be placed on the gelding for being uncompetitive. THE LAST SEQUALO – Had a tendency to lay out passing the 400m and got its head up. Race 2: 2 CHANNEL 7 BENCHMARK 85 H’CAP – 1100M The declaration of correct weight was delayed when P. Timbery, the rider of 4th placegetter I LIKE CANDY, viewed the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds on which to lodge an objection against the 3rd placegetter. After viewing the videos, jockey Timbery indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection. FAB’S COWBOY – Lost both hind plates in running. WELL SIGHTED – Had to be steadied away from heels passing the 1000m when cramped for room. Bumped by FLAVIAN passing the 150m when that runner shifted out. I AM BOSS – Improved on to heels when the pace slackened passing the 1000m, had to be restrained and shifted out, forcing WELL SIGHTED wider on the track. MY LITTLE FLICKA – Sustained injuries in the float en route to the course, examined by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 11:55 am. I LIKE CANDY – Had to be checked after passing the 200m when tightened for room by FLAVIAN, which shifted out, and then had to alter course back to the inside to obtain clear running. W. O’Connell, the rider of FLAVIAN, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that at that point he permitted his mount to shift out when being ridden along and when insufficiently clear of I LIKE CANDY. Jockey O’Connell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Wednesday 17 January and expire at midnight on Thursday 25 January 2018. FLAVIAN – Shifted out and bumped another runner passing the 150m. Race 3: RAY WHITE IPSWICH C,G&E MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M GOLDEN COMMAND – Commenced to hang out passing the 900m and then raced wide for the remainder of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer J. Zielke advised that he would experiment with some gear changes prior to the horse’s next start. Notwithstanding that advice, stewards informed Mr Zielke that a warning would be placed against the gelding’s racing manners. SHINE TAK GLORY – Overraced in the early and middle stages and raced three wide without cover. HAVEN DUKE – In the early part of the home straight was slightly tightened between SHINE TAK GLORY, which was weakening, and GOLDEN COMMAND, which laid in slightly. Following the running of this event, a delegation of riders expressed concerns that the extreme heat (42.3 degrees) was having on their ability to breathe and to fulfil their remaining engagements. Several riders who rode in Race 3 explained that they had difficulty breathing during the event and in their opinion it would be unsafe for them to continue riding with the temperature forecast to remain above 40 degrees for at least the next 90 minutes. Consideration was given to possibly rescheduling the remaining races to a later time to allow for the temperature to drop. However, as a number of riders also had engagements at the Toowoomba meeting tonight, such a delay would have resulted in horses being scratched at either or both venues due to riders’ inability to fulfil those engagements because of a reschedule. After consulting with Club officials and veterinary officers in attendance, and reviewing the temperatures from the start of the meeting and the forecast for the remainder of the day, stewards determined that, in the interests of the safety and welfare of both riders and horses, the remainder of the meeting should be postponed and declared the meeting abandoned at 2:10 pm.
