Stewards – M. Knibbs, I. Brown, B. Connell

Judge – I. Schultz, A. Rayward
Veterinarian – C. Wain
Swab Attendants – K. Warwick, M. Nixon

GENERAL

Upon arriving at the track Stewards inspected the inside section between the 400m and 500m and deemed it not suitable for racing. Stewards then requested race officials to shift the rail out approximately 1½ metres to avoid that section of the track. Upon completion of the work Stewards and a delegation of riders inspected this section and deemed it suitable for racing.

Race 1: CHANNEL 7 QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 800M

ARRIBA – Raced 3 wide throughout. Slightly inconvenienced approaching the 150m when GLOBAL FACTOR shifted out when racing greenly.

MISS ESTER – Raced 4 wide throughout.

GLOBAL FACTOR – Had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn, and continued to race greenly in the home straight.

KURO HOSHI – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey J. Lloyd explained that Trainer Mr. B. Currie had expected the filly to perform quite well if it raced up to its recent jump outs which have been quite good. He added that he was of the view that the filly has a lot of speed and, in his opinion, would possibly lead the field if it handled the track. Jockey Lloyd advised that his mount floundered in the going in the first few hundred metres, and did not handle the heavy track of today’s event. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 2: THE QLD TIMES MAIDEN PLATE – 2170M

The connections of the 2nd placegetter, KOA NUNI, viewed the Stewards patrol video to determine whether there were grounds to lodge an objection against DANGER IN DEVON. After doing so, they elected not to proceed and correct weight was declared.

DANGER IN DEVON – Had a tendency to lay in under pressure passing the 200m and made contact with KOA NUNI.

INSTANT’S HONOUR – Slow to begin.

KIRA’S BEAT – Following the race, Apprentice M. Murphy was reminded of his obligation regarding his whip use.

KOA NUNI – Shifted out slightly passing the 200m, and made contact with the hindquarters of DANGER IN DEVON. Following the race, Apprentice B. Thornton was reminded of his obligation regarding his whip use.

TIZABEE – Shifted 3 wide at the 800m, and raced 3 wide for the remainder.

Race 3: RAY WHITE IPSWICH CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1010M

MR MARKOU – Became fractious in the barriers and reared on a number of occasions prior to the start being effected. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. When questioned regarding the poor performance, Trainer Mr. B. Currie advised that he was of the view that the gelding did not handle the heavy track of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities other than that the gelding was exhibiting a slightly slower post-race recovery.

ALL PLUCK – Had a tendency to lay in in the early part of the home straight. Lost the near fore plate in running.

CLANG AGAIN – Bumped on jumping away.

Race 4: SCHWEPPES MAIDEN PLATE – 1350M

BALEARIC – Bumped on jumping away.

GREEN LUCK – Bumped on jumping away.

IT’S CHOUX TIME – Hampered on jumping away. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout. When given the opportunity to explain the tactics adopted on the mare, jockey J. Lloyd advised that from the wide barrier he attempted to restrain the mare to a rearward position which is its usual racing pattern. He added that passing the 1100m he obtained a position 3 wide with cover and was satisfied to stay in that position at that point. Stewards questioned whether there was an opportunity for jockey Lloyd to restrain his mount to obtain a position closer to the rail behind the stablemate, BALEARIC. Jockey Lloyd explained that it was never his intention to go to the inside as, in his opinion, the ground was inferior and he was happy to remain in the 3 wide position with cover. Jockey Lloyd further added that when the pace slackened in the middle stages it did not suit his mount, and at a point passing the 500m when the pace quickened, it was left flat-footed. He also advised that the mare was second up from a spell today and would appreciate a firmer surface than that of today’s event, and also a step up in distance. Stewards accepted the explanation.

KATARINA – Became fractious in the barriers and began awkwardly and, as a result, lost considerable ground.

RANI’S DYNASTY – Raced 4 wide without cover throughout.

STREETSUSS – Began awkwardly. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

Following the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Heavy 9.

Race 5: CITY OF IPSWICH FILLIES AND MARES BENCHMARK 65 H’CAP – 1200M

CHASE THE WIND – Stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr. J. Dann indicated that he may now experiment with the horse’s gear by removing the barrier blanket at its next start. Stewards nevertheless advised Mr. Dann that a warning will now be placed against the mare for its barrier manners.

TEMUJIN’S MOON – Began awkwardly.

Race 6: SKY RACING COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES BENCHMARK 65 H’CAP – 1200M

MARTINELLI – Began awkwardly.

OH BOY – Overraced in the early and middle stages whilst being restrained.

REJUVENATE – Slow to begin and then hampered shortly after the start.

Race 7: GRANDVIEW STUD CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1680M

ERCOLANO – Slow to begin and then hampered between runners shortly after the start. Shifted out passing the 400m.

MUCH DEEPER – Raced 3 wide with cover passing the 800m.

PONYTALES – Raced 3 wide without cover after passing the 800m. Lost the off fore plate in running.

DARESAY – Began awkwardly.

COOLMUNDA – Raced wide in the early stages before being allowed to stride forward to obtain a position outside the leader passing the 1300m. Bumped by ERCOLANO which shifted out passing the 400m and, as a result, was taken wider on the track. Bumped again by ERCOLANO upon straightening.

Race 8: SIRROMET BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1350M

CONSTANTINE – Raced 3 wide in the early stages before being allowed to stride forward to obtain a position outside the leader passing the 800m.

MISS KINDILAN – Slow to begin. Tightened shortly after the start when cramped for room by WILD AVA which was taken in by BOLD GYPSY. Jockey B. Pengelly was fined $100 for using the whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. When determining penalty Stewards were mindful of the totality of whip use.

WILD AVA – Slow to begin. Tightened shortly after the start when cramped for room by BOLD GYPSY which shifted in. Apprentice C. Bayliss, the rider of BOLD GYPSY, was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in the future. Raced 3 wide after passing the 700m.
