GENERAL
As T. Marshall (injury) and M. McGillivray (illness) were indisposed, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

The start of this race was delayed when SOHO FLYER was fractious in the barriers and the rider requested that he have the saddle refitted.
RABBIOSA – An application was made by trainer T. Gollan to add blinkers to the horse’s gear. As the gelding was having its first start and had recently trialled with blinkers on, stewards acceded to the request. SMOKIN’ HUSSAY – Bumped on jumping. Raced greenly and had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

Dais explained that the gelding had not started for over 12 months but had trialled well in blinkers leading up to today’s event. He was of the opinion that the gelding, from a favourable barrier, would be competitive. Stewards noted that the gelding was well supported in betting. Mr Dais advised that he and connections had only a small investment on the gelding today.
SHOOT FOR REAL – Had to be checked and steadied away from the heels of GREYNOMAD passing the 800m.
GREYNOMAD – Blundered passing the 900m when checked from the heels of MASTER MAGIC AL which shifted in. R. Stewart, the rider of MASTER MAGIC AL, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in at that stage when insufficiently clear of GREYNOMAD. Jockey Stewart’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 1 April and expire at midnight Monday 9 April 2018. In determining penalty, stewards were mindful of jockey Stewart’s plea of guilt and his good record in relation to this rule. Hampered rounding the home turn when racing in restricted room. Had to be steadied away from heels over the final 50m and shift back to the inside.
KING DINISTY – Improved on to the heels of the tiring MOSSERATI passing the 400m and shifted out, slightly hampering GREYNOMAD.
KEEN TIARA – Bumped and became unbalanced shortly after the start. Raced three wide without cover throughout. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the gelding, trainer D. Duryea explained that she has had some difficulty with the gelding’s tractability and wayward racing manners. She added that although the gelding’s track work has been good, it has not performed to the same extent in its races. She said that the horse was first up from a long spell, during which time she has experimented with some gear changes in its track work and was of the opinion that the gear changes for today’s race contributed to the improvement in the gelding’s performance.
MOSSERATI – After leading in the early stages the horse compounded to finish a distant last. When questioned regarding the gelding’s poor performance, jockey L. Rolls was of the view that the horse may have choked down. Trainer B. Hill advised stewards that he would experiment with some gear changes for its future races, which may include adding a tongue tie.

MR CHOW – Raced four wide without cover throughout. When questioned as to the horse’s improved performance, trainer B. Currie expressed his genuine surprise and was unable to offer any tangible explanation. Mr Currie stated that following its last place at Gatton on 24 March, he advised owners that the gelding should be moved on to another stable, however, as it had already been nominated for today’s event, connections determined that it should be given one last chance for the stable. Mr Currie added that he had not been overly disappointed in its performance three starts ago at Toowoomba, however, was disappointed in the tactics adopted at its disappointing performance at Moree two starts ago and for these reasons had originally nominated it for today’s event. Furthermore, when he noticed that SPURCRAFT, which was nominated for the same race at Gatton and also today’s race, had been scratched from Gatton, he elected to start the gelding there in an effort to avoid competing against SPURCRAFT. Whilst noting the explanation, stewards will make further inquiries. Stewards confirmed with managing owner Mr S. Elliot Mr Currie’s comments.

Had to be steadied passing the 400m when tightened for room between ALFIE JUNIOR and STAR ECHO, which shifted out. M. Hellyer, the rider of STAR ECHO, was advised to exercise more care.
BEERINAWINEGLASS – Momentarily held up and had to be steadied away from heels and shift wider on the track to obtain clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

HIGH AFRICAINE – Raced three wide with cover throughout. Shifted out to a four wide position to improve when the pace slackened passing the 900m. When questioned regarding the horse’s improved performance, trainer B. Currie stated that the mare was fitter, having its third run in from a spell and stepping up to a more suitable distance on a soft track, which the mare appreciates. He was of the opinion that the mare would race much better and gave her a reasonable chance of finishing in the prize money. He further stated that at her last start the mare raced on the inside section of the track which in his opinion was far inferior to the rest of the track. He further added that the mare, now that she is up in distance, would continue to step up in distance and he expected her to be competitive, especially on rain-affected tracks.
DARK ELEMENT – Overraced passing the 1300m, got its head up when being restrained and had to be steadied away from the heels of DAZET. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, jockey L. Rolls explained that the horse was fresh and overraced throughout the event and raced more forward than anticipated. When questioned regarding the horse’s overall finishing effort over the concluding stages, he said the gelding was disappointing and that the early effort may have told at the finish. Trainer B. Lockwood said that in light of today’s performance he would look to freshening up the gelding before returning to racing.
