SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From ITC 29 August 2018 – Race 1 (1350m):

QRIC Stewards concluded an inquiry into apprentice Stephanie Lacy’s riding of SIOUXSIE over the final 500m in Race 1 the Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate 1350m at Ipswich Turf Club on 29 August 2018.

Evidence was taken following the race from the rider of SIOUXSIE, apprentice Lacy. The matter was adjourned to allow Mr John Symons, master of apprentice Lacy, to be present.

Further evidence was taken from apprentice Stephanie Lacy, assisted by her master, and also from Mr Shane Scriven on behalf of the Racing Queensland Training Department. After hearing submissions, Stewards accepted their explanations concerning Ms Lacy’s riding approaching and rounding the home turn, however, in regards to Ms Lacy’s riding in the early stages of the home straight, Stewards advised Ms Lacy that she had erred in failing to ride with enough urgency to improve between ACCEPTITA and RISEUPSKATING to demonstrate that she was doing her utmost to ensure that SIOUXSIE finished in the best possible place in the field. Stewards were of the view that Ms Lacy’s actions were not to the extent that would render her culpable under the rules and therefore took no further action, other than to order that Ms Lacy undertake further tuition with the Racing Queensland Training Department. Stewards further advised that following this tuition the panel would make an assessment on whether her Metropolitan licence needs to be reviewed.

GENERAL

As apprentice S. Sweeney was indisposed due to personal reasons, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: SIRROMET MAIDEN H’CAP – 2200M

NOBLE THOUGHT – Began awkwardly. Momentarily held up rounding the home turn.

MISFITS – Bumped on the hind quarters at the start by SOLO FLYER.

TANG DYNASTY – Initially slow to begin and then hampered when tightened for room shortly after. Raced wide from the 600m after shifting wider to improve forward.

SOHO FLYER – Bumped at the start.

Race 2: WHITTINGTON @ GRANDVIEW STUD MAIDEN H’CAP – 800M

FLAME OF LIBERTY – J. Lloyd reported at scale that shortly after the start his mount felt uncomfortable in its action and for this reason he elected not to pressure the gelding for the remainder of the event and was eventually eased out of the race in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings and a swab sample was taken. Trainer M. Lakey was advised that the gelding would be required to compete satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to racing again.

JACK OF SPADES – Raced greenly throughout.

BETAJET – Had to be steadied after improving on to heels near the 400m.

COCO MONSIEUR – Shifted in at the start, bumping another runner.

BEL’S BANNER – Trainer D. Duryea was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identity Card. Slow to begin. Hung out rounding the home turn and continued to lay out for the majority of the home straight.

FOXSULT – Slow to begin and was then hampered when bumped by COCO MONSIEUR, which shifted in at the start. Had to be steadied near the 400m when placed in restricted room between runners.

Race 3: BOOK NOW MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEON C,G&E MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

PONDEROSO – Slow into stride.

MINGALAH – Raced wide throughout.

SOLDIER INA SADDLE – Slow to begin.

TOUCAN SAM – Inconvenienced near the 1000m when bumped and forced inwards.

CEREMONIAL PRINCE – Raced three wide without cover for the majority of the event. Hampered near the 300m and obliged to shift away from the heels of TOUCAN SAM, which shifted out.

AWESOME MO – Taken inwards by another runner near the 1000m. Lost both hind plates in running.

ACTION D’IMPULSION – Had to be checked near the 1000m to avoid the heels of AWESOME MO, which was taken in by STARKERS. J. Lloyd, the rider of STARKERS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that at that point her permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of AWESOME MO. Jockey Lloyd’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 22 September and expire at midnight on Sunday 30 September 2018. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Lloyd’s previous good record and that the carelessness was in the low range. Held up approaching the 400m and then had to be steadied from the heels of TOUCAN SAM, which shifted in. Obliged to shift wider after entering the home straight in order to obtain clear running.

Race 4: IPSWICH RACING MUSEUM ROOM HIRE F&M MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

FORTUNATE DECREE – Bumped another runner on jumping and again a short distance later.

SHE’S WELCOME – Raced three wide without cover throughout. When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, J. Lloyd stated that the mare raced greenly and was inclined to lay out throughout and was disappointing. Trainer’s representative G. Doughty was at a loss to explain today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

LUVDISC – Had to be checked at the start when tightened for room between runners.

SWORDFISH – Bumped with FORTUNATE DECREE at the start and a short distance later shifted in and again bumped that runner, which shifted in and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of CANTERBURY, resulting in the rider of that runner becoming unbalanced and almost being dislodged. When afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance, which was below market expectation, J. Byrne stated that after placing the horse under pressure leaving the 700m it failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing in its finishing effort. Trainer T. Gollan advised that the filly would now most likely be retired from his stable. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

CANTERBURY – Bumped heavily on the hind quarters a short distance after the start, resulting in the rider becoming unbalanced and almost being dislodged.

ZARREEN – When questioned regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance, trainer J. Walk explained that at the filly’s previous start it had trialled well leading into the event and he was confident of a forward showing. However, on that occasion the filly was obliged to work hard from its wide barrier to obtain a forward position and had raced wide in the early stages. He added that following the disappointing performance he removed the blinkers and the filly had worked well, and from an inside draw today he was confident of a better performance.

SEQUALO’S SPIRIT – Slow to begin.

CAPEOS – Bumped by BLACK WAND near the 300m.

MADISON POINT – Trainer S. Morrisey advised that it would be the intention to have the gelding ridden in a handy position with cover. When asked to comment regarding the tactics adopted, jockey R. Wiggins stated that it was his intention to settle further forward, however, the gelding failed to muster sufficient speed despite his efforts in the early stages and as a result settled further back. He added that the gelding was doing its best work over the concluding stages.

MELANYA – Restrained from its wide barrier in the early stages to assume a position at the rear of the field with cover.

COURTING JOY – Had to be eased over the concluding stages when tightened for room.

The start of this race was delayed when LATINO LOVER had to be replated.

JUNCTION – When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, jockey P. Hammersley stated that the gelding was not suited by the steady tempo in the middle stages and as a result was unable to quicken over the concluding stages and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other than that the gelding had lost the near fore plate in running.

LEFKAS ISLAND – When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, J. Byrne expressed his disappointment in the performance and the only explanation he could offer was that the mare, in his opinion, raced flat and did not feel entirely comfortably in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding the horse’s post-race recovery.

MYSTERIUM – Raced wide in the early stages before obtaining the lead near the 1200m.
