Lloyd in regards to the performance of STARKERS. Mr Lloyd advised that the colt never travelled comfortably throughout the event and when placed under pressure from the 600m immediately came off the bit and failed to respond to his riding from that point. Trainer C. Munce advised that he would monitor the post-race recovery of the colt, however, at this stage it would be his intention to continue with its current preparation. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to SOFT 5, retrospective to include Race 1. Gollan in relation to UMBERTO settling in a more forward position than at its two most recent starts. Mr Gollan advised that three starts ago at Doomben he notified a change of tactics whereby the horse would be ridden forward if circumstances permitted and on that occasion it was ridden accordingly. He added that at its following start the intention was again to have the horse ridden in a forward position, however, the gelding was severely tightened for room and had to be checked on jumping away and as a consequence settled in a rearward position. Mr Gollan went on to say that at its most recent start at Doomben the intention was again to be in a forward position, however, after being caught wide in the early stages rider B. Stewart elected to restrain to a position towards the rear of the field near the 800m rather than be caught wide. Mr Gollan further added that the instructions again today were to be in a forward position, consistent with the instructions issued at the gelding’s three most recent starts, and today the gelding, given the manner in which the race played out, was afforded the opportunity to obtain a forward position. Stewards noted the explanation. BOILING – Raced keenly in the early stages and laid out rounding the home turn. TANGO YANKEE – Lost the near hind plate in running.
