Race 1: RAY WHITE IPSWICH QTIS 2YO Maiden Handicap – 800m

After arriving late on course due to transport difficulties CRAIGLEA GRACE underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. The filly was then late entering the enclosure when the trainer had difficulty fitting its tongue tie, resulting in it being late out of the enclosure, which led to the start of the race being delayed.

CRAIGLEA GRACE – Slow to begin.

HEADBELLS – Began very awkwardly and made heavy contact with RAGING POLE.

RAGING POLE – Began very awkwardly making heavy contact with the barrier partition and was then bumped. Raced wide throughout.

GEM OF SCOTLAND – After passing the 200m when placed under pressure raced greenly and laid out slightly.

STRYKING PRINCESS – Raced greenly over the final 150m.

SHY BOY – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

App N. Fazackerley (CRAIGLEA GRACE) was fined $200  for failing to claim down to his allocated riding weight.

TIZ – As the mare had not raced or trialled for over twelve months it underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Passing the 600m laid in slightly.

PROUD’S SEQUEL – Began awkwardly resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced. Had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at heels shortly after the start. The mare subsequently settled much further back than its normal racing pattern before finishing the race off well over the finishing stages.

INSTANTANEOUS – Shortly after the start had to be steadied away from heels.

AVASA – Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in in the home straight. Raced three wide with cover throughout.

BETAJET – Raced three wide with cover after passing the 700m. Hung out rounding the home turn.

NONCHALANTE – Shortly after straightening improved onto and blundered and had to alter course to the inside to obtain clear running.

RED MINI – Passing the 300m when commencing to weaken became awkwardly placed between AVASA to its outside, which was laying in slightly and INSTANTANEOUS, which shifted out to improve. Raced three wide without cover throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have been galloped on on the off hind leg and was suffering from heat stress. It was further revealed that after collapsing in the vicinity of the tie-up stalls and its head making heavy contact with the ground blood was evident from both nostrils shortly after. The veterinary surgeon expressed his opinion that the bleeding was as a result of external trauma. Stewards however advised trainer M. Kropp that the manner in which the mare pulled up after the race would warrant the mare to gallop a 1000m in the presence of stewards and obtain a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

FAME AND FORTUNE – Passing the 200m ducked in abruptly when being hit with the whip.

Race 3: SIRROMET Class 1 Handicap – 1010m

SIZZLING SUN – Raced three wide with cover throughout.

Race 4: SCHWEPPES Class 5 Handicap – 1200m

HONOUR’N’STRENGTH – Trainer M.  Leitch advised the intention would be to push forward to obtain the lead if circumstances permit. After being ridden aggressively out of the barriers was unable to settle in a forward position and raced in the second half of the field.

BARGANNON – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

ABSOLUTLYPOSITIVLY – A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be suffering from moderate heat stress.

Race 5: QUEENSLAND TIMES Maiden Plate – 1010m

CHRISTMAS CREEK – Began awkwardly and shifted in making heavy contact with ASTROBABY, which had to be checked and lost ground. Passing the 900m laid in despite the efforts of its rider causing some tightening to runners to its inside. After being crossed by DERUMOR passing the 800m had to steady away from the heels of that runner shortly after.

ASTROBABY – On jumping away was severely hampered and had to be checked and lost considerable ground. Laid out rounding the home turn and made the turn wide on the track. Laid out under pressure over the final 100m.

BUCK STOPS HERE – Began awkwardly and shifted out.

TOOGOOLAWAH TRUMP – Began awkwardly and shifted out bumping CEREMONIAL PRINCE. Shortly after the start was tightened between runners and lost ground.

CEREMONIAL PRINCE – After jumping was severely tightened for room between runners and lost significant ground.

BUDMEISTER – Passing the 900 had to be steadied away from the heels of CHRISTMAS CREEK.

DERUMOR – When questioned regarding the performance jockey B. Stewart explained that he was obliged to ride forward after being caught wide early and probably had to do more work than he would have liked before obtaining a position outside the leader passing the 800m. He added that from that point on the gelding travelled reasonable but shortly after straightening when placed under pressure failed to respond and proved disappointing over the concluding stages. He further added that as the gelding was first up from a spell today and would benefit from the run.

MOUNTBATTEN – When questioned regarding the improved performance trainer L. McCormick explained that the gelding was having its first start for her today and the horse has had a history of bad barrier manners, which in the short time she has had the gelding she has addressed as best as possible. Ms McCormick added that with the experimenting of some gear changes she had expected a forward showing today.

Race 6: RIVER 94.9FM Ratings Band 0-62 Handicap – 1680m

As the ear muffs could not be properly fitted under the bridle of KEEP ON ROCKING Stewards permitted the gelding to race without ear muffs, which were part of its advertised gear.

The start was delayed slightly when KATARINA proved difficult to load.

MOSS GO NOW – Began awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn.

MOSSERATI – Hung out rounding the home turn.

KATARINA – Held up rounding the home turn.

Stewards inquired into the tactics adopted on RITCHFORD (R. Wiggins), MALCRIADO (M. McGillivray) and KIRA’S BEAT (H. English). Jockey McGillivray advised his instructions were to lead, which is its normal racing pattern but after travelling a short distance he was able to cross from the wide alley and obtain a position in the lead on the rail however, was joined on his outside by KIRA’S BEAT and shortly after RITCHFORD was three wide joint leader approaching the 1400m. Jockey McGillivray was reluctant to initially hand up the lead but after travelling a short distance when the pace quickened noticeably he then elected to allow RITCHFORD to go forward and cross him passing the 1200m.  Jockey English explained that she was happy to settle in the position outside the leader in the early stages however, when RITCHFORD came up to her outside her mount began to overrace and took some distance before coming back and taking a sit behind the other two runners. Jockey Wiggins explained that his instructions were to push forward and lead. Jockey Wiggins added that RITCHFORD took some riding to get in a position to obtain the lead and passing the 1300m he felt there was not an opportunity to come back and in his best option was to comply with the instructions given he pressed forward to eventually obtain the lead passing the 1200m. Jockey Wiggins further added that the gelding has raced in a similar manner previously and failed to finish the race off. Stewards confirmed the instructions given by Mr R. Heathcote. After taking all factors into consideration Stewards accepted the explanations given by all parties and took no further action. Mr Heathcote further advised that it would now be his intention to send RITCHFORD for a spell.

HEAT SHIELD was disqualified from its second placing under the provisions of AR143(a) when jockey B. Stewart weighed in in excess of half a kilogram underweight. Jockey B. Stewart was fined $3,000 for returning to scale in excess of a half a kilogram underweight as permitted under the provisions of AR143(b). In determining penalty Stewards were mindful of the seriousness of the breach of this Rule. Stewards also gave consideration to the loss of prize money to the owners and the loss of monies invested on the gelding.
