EXPERT REPLY – Got its head up and overraced in the early and middle stages when positioned outside the leader. Hung out after passing the 500m. The veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had blood in its left nostril as a result of a small wound. LENNON’S PADDOCK – Tightened for room and had to be checked passing the 400m when KINGSTON CAUSEWAY laid in and away from SIR EARLSTOUN, which shifted in. At a subsequent inquiry stewards could not apportion blame for the incident to any one rider due to the racing manners of KINGSTON CAUSEWAY and therefore took no further action. SIR EARLSTOUN – Hung out approaching the 500m. SMOKIN’ HUSSAY – Hampered on jumping and made contact with the inside rail shortly after the start. Hung in under pressure in the home straight. Race 4: SCHWEPPES CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1680M PRINCE OF TIE – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Inclined to overrace and lay out slightly when leading in the early and middle stages. Cahill reported that his mount was under pressure whilst hanging out rounding the home turn and was very disappointing in the run to the line. He indicated that carrying top weight in today’s event may have had a detrimental effect on the overall performance. He added that in his opinion the horse races best on very firm surfaces. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slow recovery. SICARIO – Bumped on jumping. Shifted three wide in an attempt to improve after passing the 1000m and went forward to be positioned outside the leader passing the 800m. MEYIWA HITAM MAWAR – Bumped on jumping. RELAXED – The horse raced in bar plates, which was a late gear change approved by stewards after a request from trainer A. Willick yesterday. A public announcement was made to this effect. Severely hampered between runners on jumping and lost ground. Had some difficulty securing clear running for a short distance upon straightening. TOORAK COMEDY – Severely hampered between runners on jumping and lost ground. Held up rounding the home turn. Race 5: QUEENSLAND TIMES MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M SPEEDGUN – Hampered slightly on jumping. Improved on to heels approaching the 150m and had to alter course back to the inside to obtain clear running. LITTLE BIT OF SUZY – Raced greenly and laid out when shifting out rounding the home turn to make ground. MISS COCHISE – Began awkwardly. The veterinary surgeon reported that the mare was lame in the off foreleg following the event. Trainer G. Schwenke was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start. Mr Schwenke indicated that it would now be his intention to retire the mare from racing. MISS KREY ZEE – Raced three wide without cover for the majority of the event. CHOICE MISSILE – Performed below market expectations. When asked to explain the performance, jockey M. McGillivray stated that the filly began reasonably but failed to muster early speed and in his opinion failed to handle today’s track conditions. Race 6: CHANNEL SEVEN QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1350M The declaration of correct weight was delayed when stewards and L. Tarrant, the rider of 2nd placegetter MISSIE ARCHER, and J. Byrne and M. Du Plessis, the respective riders of UNCONDITIONAL and LOVE YOU LUCY, placed equal 4th by the Judge, viewed the respective photo finish images. After viewing the image for 1st, jockey Tarrant indicated that he was satisfied with the Judge’s placings. After viewing the image for 4th, jockey Byrne was satisfied that there appeared to be a margin separating his mount and LOVE YOU LUCY, and after steward J. Williamson conferred with the Judge and viewed the official photo finish image, it was established that there was in fact a margin separating LOVE YOU LUCY and UNCONDITIONAL. Accordingly, the Judge amended the placings and correct weight was semaphored on the numbers 2. 6, 3, 9 and 1. UNCONDITIONAL – Began very awkwardly and made heavy contact with the barrier partition, almost unbalancing its rider. When asked to explain the performance of the gelding, jockey J. Byrne expressed his view that the speed slackened quite appreciably mid-race and therefore he elected to come out to improve into the race passing the 700m and at the same time the leaders quickened and his mount then struggled to get into the race from that point. He added that in his opinion the gelding’s chances were not suited by the slow tempo in the middle stages and the quick sprint home. Stewards intend to interview J. Byrne regarding his riding of the gelding inside the final 50m. MISSIE ARCHER – Began awkwardly and shifted out. LOVE YOU LUCY – Bumped on jumping.
