SAKURA STAR – Brushed the running rail passing the 900m. Held up rounding the home turn. Disappointed approaching the 250m, and was then checked when attempting a run to the inside of ROMAN REIGN, which shifted in under hard riding, resulting in SAKURA STAR being unable to completely secure clear running and going to the line without being fully tested. Jockey M. Murphy, the rider of ROMAN REIGN, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 131(a) in that approaching the 250m he allowed his mount to shift in under riding when insufficiently clear of SAKURA STAR which was checked and lost its rightful position. Jockey Murphy’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence at midnight on Wednesday 27 May 2020 and conclude at midnight on Thursday 4 June 2020. COME IN SPINNER – Stewards accepted the explanation provided by trainer B. Lockwood regarding the late declaration of S. Cormack as rider. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, jockey S. Cormack advised that he rode the gelding as per his instructions, which were to be in a forward position and lead if possible, which is consistent with its usual racing pattern. He added that having ridden the gelding at its most recent starts, and being advised by the trainer that the gelding resents being restrained once in a comfortable rhythm, he was satisfied to allow the gelding to race in that pattern and eventually crossed DOMINICA ROSE passing the 900m. Stewards noted the explanation.

HARRYUP – Slow to begin.

OUR RED JET – After beginning from the wide barrier, the gelding was restrained to the rear to find a position closer to the rail.

DOMINICA ROSE – Threw its head in the air and brushed the running rail when being crossed by COME IN SPINNER passing the 900m. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, jockey M. Schrapel advised that he was instructed to ride the mare in a positive manner and obtain the lead if possible. He advised that, after beginning well and obtaining the lead in the early stages, his mount was challenged by COME IN SPINNER which is also a known leader. He added that, having knowledge of the mare in recent trackwork, he elected to restrain his mount, but not vigorously as it has a tendency to throw its head when being restrained and resents being ridden in that manner. He went on to say that when being crossed at the 900m and having to be steadied at that point, DOMINICA ROSE did resent being restrained. He further added that, in his opinion, the mare raced somewhat fresh today, and noted that it was having its first start for the stable today and had not had a run for 3 weeks. Stewards noted the explanation.

Kennedy was fined $200 for using her whip on more occasions than permitted prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, Stewards were mindful that MINOR LUCK was the winner of the race, however they also took into consideration apprentice Kennedy’s exemplary prior record in relation to this rule. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly improved performance, trainer N. Hocking advised that he had not been disappointed with the horse’s recent run at Gatton. He added that after its run at the Sunshine Coast two runs back he elected to freshen the gelding up and it had worked well in the lead up to today’s race following its previous run at Gatton. He added that due to the step up in distance today he had expected a forward showing, but was nevertheless surprised by the manner in which MINOR LUCK won today.

Upon arriving at the barriers, ALLUDERE required an adjustment to be made to its tongue-tie.

In this incident, PARIS CRYSTAL was also slightly inconvenienced. Jockey Stewart’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 days to commence at midnight on Saturday 30 May 2020 and concluded at midnight on Tuesday 9 June 2020. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Stewart’s guilty plea and his prior good record in relation to this rule.

SPIRIT OF EDYN – Bumped heavily on jumping and lost considerable ground.

Trainer C. Cousins was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

ARCHER’S TREASURE – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. When asked to comment on the seemingly improved performance, the stable representative, N. Hahn, advised that the gelding has had some issues with its feet in recent times, and after it pulled up lame following its last start, the gelding underwent some corrective shoeing. He added that they elected to remove the blinkers today, and advised that the gelding had been working well in the lead up to today’s race and he had expected a forward showing. He went on to say that ARCHER’S TREASURE jumped away better today and was suited when racing in a leading position, in which it has performed well previously. Stewards noted the explanation.
