Stewards after taking evidence from Trainer S Essery, Stablehand Ms L Sears, Trainer Mr B Smith, registered owner Mr G Sainsbury and Steward Mr P Kennedy found as follows-

Mr Shane Essery was found guilty of a charge of misconduct under the provisions of AR228(c) in that following the running of Race 2, in the vicinity of the wash bay in the tie ups stalls, Mr Essery acted improperly by directing insulting comments towards a Steward whist performing their duties. VIVENZO– Trainer M Morrison was fined $300 pursuant to LR36(6) for failing to scratch a dual acceptor within the prescribed time. Began awkwardly. Stewards questioned jockey L Allen as to whether there was an opportunity to shift wider on the track near the 600m to improve, rather than remaining in a one out one back position which resulted in her becoming held up until entering the home straight. Jockey Allen advised that she was instructed to ride the gelding with cover if circumstance permit. She went onto state that near the 600m when WAIKATO commenced to improve to the outside of her runner, she considered shifting wider on the track and elected to remain in the one out one back position. She further added that as a result of this she became held up for a short distance, however when able to obtain clear running the gelding ran on only fairly, and in her opinion becoming held up early in the start did not alter her finishing position. Stewards noted Jockey L Allen’s explanation. A post-race Veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

WAIKATO– Tightened for room at the start. Over raced in the early stages, before shifting to a 3 wide position near the 900m.

Jockey M Cahill advised that his mount settled in a rearward position as per its customary racing pattern, however as a result of the big field he was forced to settle a considerable distance from the leading position. Jockey Cahill added that as a result of his position in running he was not entirely disappointed in the performance of gelding which in his opinion would be better suited in races over similar distance when able to draw a better barrier than that of today’s event. A post-race Veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

When asked to comment on the performance of the gelding Jockey R Maloney advised that after beginning awkwardly, BRENTWOOD travelled only fairly and made the turns on the tight turning track awkwardly. He added that when asked to improve in the home straight the gelding had a tendency to hang in and near the 100m was forced to alter course when awkwardly placed at heels. Mr Maloney added that in his opinion the gelding would be better suited over a distance greater than that of today’s event at this stages of its preparation and would also be better suited on a bigger track. A post-race Veterinary examination revealed BRENTWOOD to have a poor post-race recovery and to be exhibiting signs of the thumps.
