Teo GENERAL Stewards permitted the following overweight: Race 1: 10 RARE AND RELIABLE (NZ) – S. Cormack +0.5kg (54kg) Race 1: SEVEN NEWS MAIDEN PLATE 800 M MEAN APPROACH – Raced wide throughout. ICEY – Began awkwardly and made heavy contact with PRIDE OF NALA. Bumped heavily and forced to check approaching the 400m when RARE AND RELIABLE (NZ) shifted in after being bumped by PRINNIE MISS. PRIDE OF NALA – Bumped heavily on jumping. PRINNIE MISS – After beginning slowly was inconvenienced shortly after the start between SO IT BEGINS and VIENNESE LOVER which begun very awkwardly and shifted in, despite the efforts of its rider. Raced keenly throughout, and on two occasions passing the 600m when inclined to lay out, bumped with TERMAGANT which was attempting to shift closer to the fence. Raced greenly again approaching the 400m when inclined to hang out, then shifted in abruptly making heavy contact with RARE AND RELIABLE (NZ) and forcing that horse in onto ICEY. Jockey W. D’Avlila reported the mare raced greenly throughout. Trainer R. Severino was advised a warning would be placed on PRINNIE MISS for its racing manners. VIENNESE LOVER – Jockey L. Tarrant reported his saddle slipped during the event. ALLEZBEC – Slow to begin. TERMAGANT – Bumped and forced wider on two occasions near the 600m when the rider was attempting to obtain cover. Raced wide throughout. Raced in restricted room approaching the 100m. Stewards questioned Apprentice E. Lang regarding her riding of TERMAGANT during the early stages of the event, after the horse had begun well and lost ground during the first 300m. Ms Lang explained she had been instructed to attempt to find cover as the horse had over raced during its most recent trial, resulting in TERMAGANT weakening over the concluding stages. She indicated that when attempting to find cover in the early stages, she was bumped by PRINNIE MISS on a number of occasions near the 600m and resulted in her having to steady and be forced wider. Ms Lang indicated in hindsight; she may have over done the instructions however felt that the circumstances involving PRINNIE MISS had a bearing on her mount. Stewards after viewing the replay of the horse’s trial and today’s patrol footage agreed, however were satisfied no action should be taken given the circumstances. RARE AND RELIABLE (NZ) – Slow to begin. Bumped heavily approaching the 400m and forced to shift in when PRINNIE MISS shifted in. Race 2: BARRIER REEF POOLS MAIDEN HANDICAP 1680 M MORE SUCCESS – Held up rounding the home turn. NEVER BIRD – Raced wide throughout. IDEELIC – Leaving the 1500m, raced in restricted room to the inside of NEVER BIRD. C. Bayliss, rider of NEVER BIRD was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident. Held up rounding the home turn. Continued to be held up in the home straight and was disappointed for a run near the 100m before shifting back out across the heels of NEVER BIRD to secure clear running. KOTONI – Slow to begin. NIGHT RULER (NZ) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after becoming fractious in the tie ups and slipping over and sustaining a minor laceration to the nearside hock. Subsequently, the gelding was cleared to start, however; required farrier attention to the near hind plate. DARK THINKER – Raced in restricted room passing the 1300m and had to be steadied to the inside of ENTERPRISE FUSE. Apprentice S. Champkin was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Raced wide in the early stages. KEEP CALM – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Over raced in the early stages. ENTERPRISE FUSE – Raced wide throughout. Forced wider near the 600m when CONNECTIONS shifted out to improve. MICK'S PASSION – Held up rounding the home turn. Race 3: TAB BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1680 M IRONSIDE – Slow to begin. WEST CORK – Over raced whilst leading in the early and middle stages. ALIRAAJ (NZ) – Raced wide in the early stages. ISLA'S DAY – Began awkwardly and lost ground. MY WHISTLEBLOWER – Raced wide from the 700m after being directed out to improve. NICE WATER – Began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout. Hung out whilst weaking rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer D. Duryea was advised the gelding would be required to trial prior to resuming. Race 4: GREAT NORTHERN CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1100 M WIN BURN – Laid in near the 200m. SPINNING SPIRIT – Race wide without cover. ZOUKINA – Slow to begin. COSMIC GOSSIP – Slow to begin. HIDDEN EYES – Difficulty obtaining clear running between the 400m and 300m behind the weakening ZEELUCK. ZEELUCK – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination in the tie up stalls due to a small abrasion to the off-hind leg and was subsequently cleared to start. Race 5: SIRROMET QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1100 M The start of this event was delayed in an attempt to hold for the running of a race at another venue. BLACK MINTO – Inconvenienced and forced wider near the 300m when THE PUNISHER shifted out to improve. Apprentice E. Lang was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. BUTT HEADS – Forced wider approaching the 600m when HEYOKA shifted out. HEYOKA – Held up from the 500m until obtaining clear running near the 200m. Stewards questioned Jockey B. Thornton in regards to the tactics adopted in todays event in that the filly settled back in the field which is in contrast to the horses established racing pattern and also whether there was an opportunity for him to improve into the race between the 600m and the 300m. Jockey B. Thornton explained it had been his intention to ride in a forward position however when the horse slipped on jumping he elected quickly to take hold and obtain a position close to the fence as he was aware there was significant pace in the race. He also explained that when trailing BLACK MINTO after passing the 600m he was positioned to the inside of BUTT HEADS and was unable to shift any wider at that point causing him to be held up until the 300m. He added that he was able to pressure the filly to improve from the 300m and secured clear running approaching the 200m. After reviewing the video footage in the presence of Jockey B. Thornton, Stewards were satisfied with the explanation tendered. THE PUNISHER – When directed out to improve near the 300m, bumped heavily with BLACK MINTO. SONG SUNG BLUE – Steadied after passing the 800m when placed in restricted room. THE LUCKY ALIEN – Steadied after passing the 800m when placed in restricted room. Race 6: SCHWEPPES BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1350 M LE HEROS – Hung out rounding the home turn. MOTOMISS – Began awkwardly and lost ground. WATCH THE CAT – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. EXPECTANT – Began awkwardly and lost ground. TWYFORD – Began awkwardly and lost ground. SLEIGH QUEEN – Held up for a short distance rounding the home turn. CRYMENOTEARS – After obtaining a position outside the lead, over raced during the early stages. Race 7:RECOVERY RACES 27 JANUARY CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1350 M Correct weight was delayed when a protest was lodged by third place getter G. Cartwright rider of JENNI INDA JUNGLE alleging interference against second place getter THE PLAYER ridden by Apprentice T. Fenlon in the home straight. After considering submissions and viewing the Stewards Patrol footage, it was established that shortly after entering the home straight THE PLAYER commenced to lay in under pressure and on two occasions near the 100m initiated contact with JENNI INDA JUNGLE. As a result of the contact between the two runners, JENNI INDA JUNGLE was inconvenienced and became unbalanced, Stewards were satisfied the interference suffered was sufficient to affect the nose margin at the conclusion of the event and upheld the objection. Correct weight was then given on the amended placings (8 SMART RECOGNITION – 14 JENNI INDA JUNGLE – 9 THE PLAYER – 11 SPIRIT OF GIVING). OZARCH – Raced wide throughout. Forced wider from the 900m. BEAN ROCKING – Leaving the 1100m, steadied from the heels of CAVAUP when the pace of the race slackened. Leaving the 900m, again steadied from the heels of CAVAUP when the pace of the race slackened. CAVAUP – Held up rounding the home turn. Jockey A. Mallyon was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race. THE PLAYER– Tightened for room on jumping and lost ground between SARSEN and JENNI INDA JUNGLE. Raced wide throughout. SARSEN – Forced wider from the 900m. Raced wide throughout.
