HARD LANDING – Improved onto heels near the 200m and obliged to check. Stewards queried App C Sutherlands riding of the gelding in the early stages of the home straight, specifically as to the reason/s why he persisted with attempting to improve into a run between UNDERHAND and DEEP BLAST when it became apparent that run was diminishing and there was insufficient room to do so. App Sutherland advised after trailing UNDERHAND throughout the early and middle stages of the event, he had anticipated that runner continuing to improve and being able to take his mount into the race. However, when that runner failed to let-down as expected and HARD LANDING improved notably when placed under pressure on straightening, his mount subsequently became improved onto and became very awkwardly placed on heels for several strides having to be checked.
After reviewing the official patrol footage, App C. Sutherland concurred with Stewards in hindsight that he had erred in persisting with a run approaching the 200m where there was insufficient room to do so between UNDERHAND and DEEP BLAST and that he would have been better positioned to have momentarily steadied and shifted to the inside of DEEP BLAST or to the outside of UNDERHAND approaching the 200m. Stewards accepted the explanation of App Sutherland though nonetheless, advised him to exercise far greater care in similar circumstances.

Gollan Stable advised that in their opinion, the mare appreciated the softer track conditions on this occasion, and had experienced somewhat unfavourable runs in its most recent starts, adding further that the stable had expected a more forward showing on this occasion. Stewards noted the explanation.
