GENERAL
Trainer Bradley Smith reported that DARKENED DESTINY bled from one nostril at trackwork this morning, the 3rd of October 2024. Mr Smith was advised that under the provisions of AR79(8) the gelding will be required to gallop over 1000m in the presence of a Steward prior to racing again.
As jockey T. Brooker was injured, changes were made as per the Stewards Raceday Summary.
DIVAZINO was declared a late scratching at 10.13am after trainer M. Wilson advised that the mare had an elevated temperature. Mr Wilson was advised that DIVAZINO will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
Stewards approved the following overweights:
Race 4. ALBION SQUARE - M. Hellyer 54kg (+1kg) = 55kg
Race 1: SCHWEPPES MAIDEN HANDICAP 1350 Metres
SPIRITED SON – Began awkwardly and shifted out. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted in the early stages, particularly in settling in a more forward position than expected, rider J. Orman advised instructions were to be handy if possible, however after being ridden forward in an effort to comply with these instructions he was caught wide without cover after runners drawn to his inside pressed forward, and he therefore allowed SPIRITED SON to roll forward and lead the event from the 800m.
KUBI KUDAKI – Crowded at the start between runners and lost ground.
READY TO FLIRT – Slow to begin.
THUNDER SHANGHAI – Held up for clear running from rounding the home turn until the passing the 150m.
CRYPT DE PIN – Crowded at the start between runners and lost ground. Laid in under pressure over the final 100m, obliging its rider to correct on several occasions.
ANTILLES – Momentarily held up for clear running at the entrance to the home straight.
KURABENII – Raced wide throughout.
Race 2: GREAT NORTHERN MAIDEN PLATE 1690 Metres
CALL SIGN worked very keenly in the preliminary and as a consequence underwent a pre-race veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 1.22pm. On declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets on CALL SIGN be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st BLUEPRINT 14c win, 33c place
2nd AUTORA 5c place
3rd EFFIE’S JOY 21c place
Co-trainer T Sears was advised that CALL SIGN must complete a satisfactory trial prior to racing again.
After being loaded into the gates, DULVERTON CHARM became fractious resulting in it getting its off hindleg cast for a significant period of time, was removed, underwent a veterinary examination and was declared a late scratching at 1.25pm. On declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets on DULVERTON CHARM be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st BLUEPRINT 9c win, 22c place
2nd AUTORA 3c place
3rd EFFIE’S JOY 14c place
Trainer P. Robl was advised that DULVERTON CHARM will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
As a result of the two late scratchings, the start of this event was delayed approximately five minutes.
BLUEPRINT – When asked to comment on the seemingly improved performance, trainer B. Dais reported that BLUEPRINT was third up today after a six month spell and suited by the step up to the 1690m. He further stated that a tongue tie had been added to the gelding’s gear and the stable was confident of a forward showing today. Stewards noted Mr Dais’ comments.
BREYTENBACH – Raced keenly during the early and middle stages.
SHARMAN PETE – Jumped out at the start and made heavy contact with WIND OF HEAVEN. Held up for clear running between the 600m and the 400m.
AUTORA – Bumped heavily shortly after the start.
EFFIE'S JOY – Leaving the 500m, raced in restricted room between WIND OF HEAVEN and MISTY GOLD which was inclined to lay in when weakening.
MISTY GOLD – Raced wide throughout.
SAKURA MAGIC (NZ) – Passing the 400m, when inclined to lay out had to be steadied from the heels of EFFIE’S JOY which was taken in marginally by MISTY GOLD, which was laid in when weakening.
WIND OF HEAVEN – Bumped heavily at the start, then shifted out bumping with AUTORA. Passing the 1400m, was bumped and taken in by BLUEPRINT (M Murphy) which shifted in. M. Murphy, rider of BLUEPRINT, was advised to exercise further care in similar circumstances.
Race 3: TAB CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1690 Metres
Correct weight was delayed when jockey A. Mallyon, rider of third placegetter STARZAM, requested to view the patrol footage of the concluding stages of the event before taking the matter no further.
SIR LAMORAK (IRE) – Raced wide throughout.
STARZAM – Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages. Near the 150m brushed with TAMBOURINE MAN.
TAMBOURINE MAN – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Near the 150m, brushed with STARZAM.
SMOOTH TORQUE – When the pace of the race eased leaving the 1300m, had to be steadied from the heels of HE’S VIRAL.
SMART AS SMART – Bumped at the start. Inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 100m.
SCHOONA THE BETTER – Jumped out at the start, contacting SMART AS SMART and lost ground.
LOUVRE LIL - Slow to begin. Raced wide with cover for the majority.
HE'S VIRAL (NZ) – Approaching the 1400m, momentarily steadied from the heels of TAMBOURINE MAN which shifted in. Weakened from the 600m. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice A. Graham could offer no explanation other than that the gelding may not have appreciated racing amongst other runners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer G. Wright was advised the nominations for HE’S VIRAL would be refused at TAB venues until the gelding establishes competitive form at non-TAB venues.
Race 4: CONGRATS JOSH & EMILY CLASS 3 HANDICAP 800 Metres
FAST FUSION – Began awkwardly resulting in its rider momentarily becoming unbalanced. Near the 150m, had to be steadied from the heels of ALBION SQUARE which shifted out.
GYPSY TRICKS (NZ) – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
DAWYN'S CHOICE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight when weakening. When asked to comment on the performance, rider B. Ainsworth stated after racing in a handy position raced flat in her opinion after being placed under pressure in the home straight. Trainer G. Cornish indicated that it would now be his intention to freshen up the mare.
YEMEAN – Held up for clear running approaching and rounding the home turn and as a consequence approaching the 200m became awkwardly placed at the heels of KISS THE COLOURS and put in an awkward stride.
DIVINE DI DORA – Slow to begin.
ALBION SQUARE (GB) – Near the 150m, laid out under pressure inconveniencing FAST FUSION which had to be steadied.
LOUD ATTRACTION – Rider N. Tomizawa could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of the mare. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities other than a mild cough. Co-trainer G. Lane was advised nominations for LOUD ATTRACTION would be refused at TAB venues until the mare establishes competitive form at non-TAB venues.
Race 5: GORDON'S GIN CLASS 2 PLATE 1350 Metres
HE'S ESSENTIAL – Brushed near the 150m.
MILLWARD – Near the 150m, shifted in and away from THE DEPUTY, and a short distance late brushed with HE’S ESSENTIAL.
THE DEPUTY (NZ) – Raced wide throughout.
THE PUNISHER – Raced wide with cover throughout.
DUSTYIAM – Slow to begin. Raced keenly during the early and middle stages.
EL KABONG – Slow to muster speed in the early stages
ISLE ORNSAY – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
MISS CHENERY – Began awkwardly, lost ground and as a result settled further back in the field than anticipated. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted particularly approaching 350m, rider A. Mallyon stated he was reluctant to come to the outside of THE PUNISHER as he was concerned that that runner may shift ground adding he was reluctant to unbalance the mare rounding the home turn. Stewards in noting the explanation of A. Mallyon did however advise him to ride his mounts in such a manner that would not leave his riding open to question.
Race 6: BARRIER REEF POOLS BM58 HANDICAP 1350 Metres
DESERT MIST – Began awkwardly and bumped AERIAL ARSENAL. Raced wide during the early stages. Passing the 150m, had to be steadied when racing in restricted room between QUEST OF QUESTS (R. Maloney) and BEEN A SECRET (S. Cormack) both of which shifted ground. Riders R. Maloney and S. Cormack were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
AERIAL ARSENAL – Bumped at the start. Rider CJ Graham reported it had been her intention to settle in a more forward position however after beginning only fairly she was obliged to settle further back in the field than anticipated. She added she was reluctant to race wide from the 600m as she was conscious of today’s rail placement. Raced wide with cover throughout.
RED STAR RUBI – Began awkwardly. Held up for clear running from the 500m until near the 300m.
THE GOLDEN SOUL – Raced wide throughout.
CLASSIQUE GAL – Slow to begin.
LUCKY SHAM (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Near the 100m, steadied from the heels of AERIAL ARSENAL which laid out under pressure.
MISS HELMUT – When asked to comment on tactics adopted in the early and middle stages when leading by a significant margin over the main body of the field, apprentice C. Krahnen stated instructions were to lead but was advised that the mare can over race when overly restrained and for this reason, she allowed MISS HELMUT to stride forward rather than attempt to restrain after having obtained the lead. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 7: SEVEN NEWS 0 - 58 HANDICAP 1690 Metres
GOLD PRINCE – Began awkwardly, bumped and lost ground.
NIPPA'S NIGHTCAP – Passing the 600m, forced wider when WITH DIAMONDS shifted out in an attempt to improve.
ONE REASON – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer P. Wallace was advised that ONE REASON will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
MORE SAINTLY (NZ) – Near the 1400m, when attempting to restrain to obtain cover, bumped with CHAMPAGNES ON ME.
CHERBOURG – Raced wide during the early stages.
TAVIESLASS (NZ) – Shifted in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice M. Castle, rider of TAVIESLASS, was fined $500 under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (1 more than permitted) and on seventeen occasions in totality.
CHAMPAGNES ON ME (NZ) – Near the 1400m, when over racing and attempting to restrain to obtain cover, bumped with MORE SAINTLY.
SUPER FAIR – Near the 500m, shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail.
WITH DIAMONDS – Raced wide with cover throughout.
Race 8: TIACS RACEDAY 18 OCT ON SALE RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP 2190 Metres
KENSHIN MARU – Leaving the 500m, raced in restricted room between COME ON EILEEN and SUBAQUA which laid in when weakening.
SIR LEONIDAS – Began awkwardly. Left a rearward trailing position at the 1600m and progressed forward to lead the event from the 1100m.
SUBAQUA – Slow to begin. Raced wide during the early stages. Rider M. Hellyer reported that the gelding commenced to weaken and he desisted from pressuring his mount from the 350m when he felt it become awkward in its action. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be stepping short in the near hind. Trainer’s representative Mr B. Hull was advised that SUBAQUA will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
ANOTHER DAZZLER – Passing the 400m, was inconvenienced and held up for clear running behind the tiring SUBAQUA before shifting in near the 300m to secure clear running.
SUPER FENKEL – At the entrance to the home straight, had to be steadied away from the heels of BACKLIT BEAUTY (K. Zecher) which shifted out. Rider K. Zechner was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice J. Williams reported that the gelding travelled comfortably throughout however when placed under pressure approaching the home turn, received some buffeting and the gelding then failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer M. Wilson was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again. Mr Wilson stated it was now his intention that SUPER FENKEL would leave his stable.
BACKLIT BEAUTY – Raced wide from the 900m.
WHYTEEPEE – Left a rearward trailing position at the 1200m and progressed forward to race outside the leader at the 100m.
LINDA'S MAGIC – Slow to begin. Raced wide from the 800m.
DUCHESS BREE – Slow to begin.
