GENERAL

Race 1: RAY WHITE IPSWICH QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN PLATE        1200 Metres

The start of this race was delayed approximately 4 minutes when WHATTA MISSION dislodged its rider enroute to the barriers and galloped a considerable distance before being recaptured. WHATTA MISSION was declared a late scratching at 1.41pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets placed on WHATTA MISSION be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st  WOLLZEILE 22c win, 14c place
2nd  DECEITFUL MISS 33c place
A post race veterinary examination of WHATTA MISSION revealed no abnormalities. Jockey J. Stanley was assessed by QAS and cleared of any injury.

INSIDE PASSAGE – Began awkwardly and bumped REDMISS. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey K. Wilson-Taylor could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

REDMISS – Began awkwardly and bumped with INSIDE PASSAGE.

Following the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Good (4).

Race 2: IMPERIAL RACING FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN HANDICAP        1200 Metres

TAJALAT (IRE) – Began awkwardly. Shortly thereafter the gelding threw its head making contact with jockey K. Wilson-Taylor’s helmet resulting in jockey Wilson-Taylor losing an iron before regathering a short distance later. Steadied from heels leaving the 800m. Bumped by CHEMIOSMOSIS near the 200m when that runner shifted out to improve. Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor was assessed by QAS and cleared to fulfill his remaining engagements.

DAISY'S PRIDE – Began awkwardly, bumped and lost significant ground. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, jockey S. Rutledge stated that whilst no specific instructions were issued other than to allow the mare to settle where it is comfortable. Ms Rutledge added that after being slow to begin, hampered shortly thereafter and settling in a rearward position, she elected to trail CHEMIOSMOSIS until approaching the 500m. Jockey Rutledge was hesitant to allow her mount to improve into the race earlier, as at its most recent start at the Sunshine Coast on the 22nd of December, it was inclined to lay in and proved difficult to ride, and she did not want to commence a run very wide around the home turn. Jockey Rutledge further added that in her opinion, the mare may have resented the tongue tie. Riding instructions were confirmed by a representative for Munce Racing. Stewards noticed jockey Rutledge’s comments. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

CHARME DE ROSEY – Bumped on jumping.

CHEMIOSMOSIS – Slow to begin. Bumped near the 200m. Laid out over the concluding stages. When asked to comment on the seemingly improved performance, trainer L. Gough reported that at its most recent start, the gelding was caught wide for the majority and received a check near the 600m. Stewards noted his comments.

VALLEY OF OWLS – Trainer R. Tyrell was fined $200 pursuant to LR67(1) for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time.

Race 3: TAB CLASS 2 HANDICAP           1350 Metres

CAN'T RECALL ONE (NZ) – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice J. McMurray reported that the gelding finished off the event well, and in his opinion would be better suited over a longer distance.

IOANE (NZ) – Began awkwardly.

SOBUTE – Raced greenly over the concluding stages.

GREY IMPACT – Lunged at the gates prior to the start being effected. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from the offside nostril. Trainer Mr L. Gough was advised that the mare must gallop 1000m in the presence of a Steward prior to racing again.

SMOKIN' DE QUO – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey D. Smith reported that he was disappointed in the performance of the mare, but in his opinion, would be better suited over further ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed SMOKIN’ DE QUO to be lame in the off hindleg. Trainer D. Ward was advised that the mare would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Race 4: GREAT NORTHERN BM68 HANDICAP          1200 Metres

BALTRAY – Leaving the 100m, momentarily raced in restricted room.

LION CLASS – Held up for clear running approaching the home turn. Laid in slightly leaving the 100m.

TORONADO ROUGE – Began awkwardly. Jockey D. Thornton could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. Underwent a post race veterinary inspection which revealed no apparent abnormalities.

ROSE OF SHIRAZ – A pre race veterinary inspection revealed superficial abrasions to the inside of the offside hock and was cleared to start. When asked to comment, jockey J. Bayliss advised that in his opinion, the mare may not have appreciated today’s firmer track conditions.

Race 5: SCHWEPPES COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES MAIDEN HANDICAP           1200 Metres

SAFETY ROPE – Buffeted on jumping and lost ground.

EXSIDEE – Rider J. Huxtable reported that his mount being first up today and as a result was inclined to race very fresh, and in his opinion, the gelding will derive benefit from the run.

FACUNDO – Laid out rounding the home turn. Continued to be lay out in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding for its racing manners.

HERECOMESANTORINI – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Carried wider rounding the home turn when FACUNDO ran off.

ZOULAR – Hampered on jumping and lost ground. Held up for clear running approaching the home turn.

SAND 'N' POWER – Raced wide throughout.

GARTAN – Near the 50m, raced in restricted room when ZOULAR was attempting to shift wider. Apprentice J. McMurray, rider of ZOULAR, was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Race 6: GORDON’S GIN BM60 HANDICAP          1666 Metres

MARTEDI – Raced wide for the majority. Laid out rounding the home turn.

OUR ORATOR – Jockey R. Dolan dropped his nearside rein inside the final 100m.

NAGAMIE – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight. When asked to comment, jockey M. ACES UP (NZ) – Caught wide during the early stages and allowed to stride forward.

DARK THINKER – Rounding the home turn, became awkwardly placed at the heels of MARTEDI which when tiring shifted wider, bumping with MISS BRITTANY which was improving to its outside.

MISS BRITTANY – Bumped on the hindquarters on several occasions and became unbalanced when DARK THINKER was taken out slightly by MARTEDI. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

NITROGLYCERINE – As jockey N. Beriman was not riding for acceptable reasons, she was replaced by jockey M. Du Plessis. Cast the off hind plate.

ARTIE PANTZ – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.

LIKE SMOKE – Slow to begin. Over raced during the early stages. Laid in approaching the finishing line and bumped HOW RUDE.

RAFALE JOLIE – Jockey S. Collett reported that her mount was disappointing in its finishing effort. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Trainer R. Tyrell reported that it was his intention to have the mare scoped and he would report back to Stewards in the coming days.

OUR DRUMMER – Began awkwardly.

LINE OF LAW – Held up rounding the home turn until the 200m.

YEMEAN – Began very awkwardly and shifted out. Over raced during the early and middle. Raced wide throughout. Laid in near the 200m.

HOW RUDE – Raced keenly during the middle stages when the pace slackened. Unable to improve from the 600m and until the early part of the home straight. Near the 200m, was disappointed for a run between IT’S HELLS BELLS and YEMEAN, which shifted in before being obliged to shifted wider near the 150m to obtain clear running. Bumped with LIKE SMOKE approaching the finishing line when that runner laid in. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, apprentice E. Lang reported that her instructions were to have the filly settle where it was comfortable. Apprentice Lang added that the filly was not suited by the moderate tempo nor racing between runners, was held up at heels at vital stages of the event and was unable to secure clear running. Apprentice E. Lang also added that the filly may be suited by a step up in distance. Stewards noted apprentice Lang’s comments.

IT'S HELLS BELLS – Raced wide throughout.

RICHKISS – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Raced keenly during the early and middle stages when racing wide.
