Stewards, in the presence of Racing Qld apprentice mentor Mr. R Fradd, inquired into tactics adopted by apprentice C Krahnen during the event, firstly her actions in the first 400m of the event when racing some distance off the main body of the field, and secondly her vigour from the 500m to the finish of the race. Ms Krahnen advised instructions were to be positive on the mare out the barriers, particularly as MAYBE SMART was first up today following a stable change and also was racing in a change of gear specifically a tongue tie and blinkers. Ms Krahnen added after beginning awkwardly, MAYBE SMART did not respond to her urgings in an effort to take up a closer position to the main body of the field, which she attributed to the horse resenting the tongue tie. She further stated MAYBE SMART responded to her riding somewhat from the 700m and that rounding the home turn and in the home straight the horse had a tendency to lay in at various stages and as a result became awkwardly placed near the heels of MISS PERSONALITY near the 150m. After viewing the patrol footage, Stewards advised Ms Krahnen they had grave concerns with her tactics adopted in the race, however bearing in mind her status and limited race riding experience as an apprentice, and her comments regarding MAYBE SMART resenting the application of the tongue tie, they elected not to take any direct action other than to refer this ride to the Racing Qld training department for further attention. Trainer Mr B Gentle indicated it would now be his intention to remove the tongue tie from the approved racing gear of MAYBE SMART.
