GENERAL
On arrival on-course the track was downgraded to a Soft 7 at 10:30am.
As M. Palmer was injured, Stewards permitted Jockey J. Bayliss to ride SCOTTISH PRINCE (Race 8). M. Palmer was advised he would require medical clearance prior to resuming.
Stewards permitted the following overweight:
Race 6: 19 SATURDAY GLORY – A. Thompson +0.5kg (54.5kg)
Race 1: KILCOY DIGGERS 'THE CHAMPIONS' MAIDEN PLATE 800 M
CHAHPINGAH – Raced greenly for the majority of the event.
CHIARO DI LUNA – Slipped behind near the 400m and near the 200m blundered losing momentum on both occasions.
SPLIT THE CASH – Raced greenly when placed under pressure over the final 100m.
STARSPANGLE PLANET – Slow to begin.
XTRA LOUD – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages and as a result was unable to be fully tested by its rider over the final 100m.
MADAM ASAM – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Passing the 400m, laid out despite the efforts of its rider, became awkwardly placed at the heels of BOOMLANDER and lost ground.
RAN NA LADY – As Jockey L. Tilley was to be overweight, Stewards permitted Apprentice J. Williams to ride the horse. Jockey L. Tilley was fined $100 pursuant to AR 190(3) for accepting a ride for which he was to be overweight.
Following this event, Stewards inspected a section of the track from the 400m until the entrance to the home straight and found the surface suitable for racing.
Race 2: KILCOY EXCHANGE HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 46 800 M
The start of this race was delayed after CAPTAIN ARTIE became fractious and was then cast in the barriers, was removed underwent a veterinary examination and subsequently declared a late scratching at 12:43pm. Trainer V. Venkaya was advised the gelding would require veterinary clearance and a further barrier certificate prior to racing again.
The start was further delayed due to an electrical malfunction and the race had to be started via manual start.
On the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered all bets on CAPTAIN ARTIE to be refunded in full and the following deductions to apply:
1st - ISLAND TIDE – 0c win, 1c place.
2nd - BAD FOREST – 6c place.
3rd - DONMORE GIRL – 10c place.
COSMIC SERENADE – Raced wide throughout.
PRINCESS MARIAN – Tightened shortly after the start and lost ground.
AMPHAWA – Bumped on the hindquarters shortly after the start, became unbalanced and lost ground.
SISTER GEORGIA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide throughout. When ask to comment on the performance, Jockey M. Hellyer could offer no explanation other than the mare may not have been suited to todays prevailing track conditions.
Prior to the start of Race 3, the barriers were successfully tested on a number of occasions.
Race 3: LADBROKES BET TICKER BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 46 1900 M
MERLOMANN – Raced wide throughout.
END OF MONTH (NZ) – Held up behind tiring runners between the 500m and the home turn.
BRAIN FOG – Raced wide in the early stages before obtaining a position outside the leader near the 1000m. Weakened from the 500m. When asked to comment on the disappointing performance, Jockey S. Cormack could offer no explanation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer L. Birchley reported he would now experiment with gear alterations in an attempt to make the filly more competitive.
ANOTHER DAZZLER – Held up between the 500m until leaving the 300m.
INDENTED HEAD – Near the 900m when the pace steadied, improved onto the heels of BRAIN FOG and had to be restrained. Passing the 500m, held up on the heels of the weakening BRAIN FOG and lost significant ground.
HELEN'S DREAM – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Stewards permitted Apprentice J. McMurray to ride the mare claiming only 1.5kg of his 2kg claim. Apprentice J. McMurray was fined $200 pursuant to AR 143(14)(a) for failing to claim his full allowance.
ALERT AND READY – Slow to begin.
PRESS LIGHTLY – Raced wide from the 700m.
HELL OF A PRINCE – Raced ungenerously in the early stages. Raced wide throughout.
Race 4: LADBROKES EASY FORM BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 50 1200 M
GALACTIC LEGEND – Slow to begin. Taken out rounding the home turn. Trainer S. Kendrick was fined $200 pursuant to LR 67(1) for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time.
WHISKEY DANCER – Laid out rounding the home turn taking both SHINSHINTO and GALACTIC LEGEND wider on the track.
SHINSHINTO – Raced wide throughout. Taken out rounding the home turn. Trainer I. Turner was fined $200 pursuant to LR 36(6)(a) for failing to scratch a dual accepter by the prescribed time.
OBLIVION – Near the 1000m, was bumped on the hindquarters and became unbalanced when BIGGIE laid in. Laid out rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils for the first time. Trainer B. Jones was advised the OBLIVION would be stood down from racing pursuant to AR 79(4) for 3 months and must trial or gallop 1000m in the presence of Stewards prior to racing again.
BIGGIE – Laid in near the 1000m.
Race 5: FREE ENTRY VETERANS RACEDAY SUNDAY 25TH AUGUST QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 60 HCP - BASE RATING 48 1200 M
MASTERPLAN – Trainer B. Stewart was fined $100 pursuant to LR 67(1) for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time. Raced wide throughout. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey R. Wiggins reported the gelding was obliged to race wide throughout from the wide draw, however; was disappointing when placed under pressure from the 600m was disappointing and in his opinion MASTERPLAN raced flat today. Trainer B. Stewart advised Stewards he would monitor the gelding’s post-race condition and report back. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
ESJAY – Shifted out at the start.
GALWAY HUSSLER – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running leaving the 300m.
BEACHSIDE BABE – Bumped at the start between ESJAY which shifted out and CRIMSON WARNING which shifted in.
CRIMSON WARNING – Shifted in at the start.
TYPHOON TIP – Slow to begin.
THE UNDERGROUND – Checked leaving the 1000m. At a subsequent inquiry, Apprentice R. Thornburn pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 131(a) in than passing the 1000m, he made insufficient effort to prevent his mount shifting in resulting in BEAN THERE TOO being taken in which in turn resulted in THE UNDERGROUND (A. Thompson) being checked. Apprentice R. Thorburn’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven (7) days, commencing midnight Saturday 13 July 2024, concluding midnight Saturday 20 July 2024.
CAILIN ALAINN – Slow to begin. Apprentice E. Molloy reported in her opinion the filly did not appreciate todays prevailing track conditions.
Race 6: THANK YOU JENNY SEARLE 0 - 55 HANDICAP 1200 M
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, G. Cartwright rider of third place getter FLYING TYROL viewed the Stewards patrol footage in the home straight before electing to lodge a protest against second place getter ALLEZIZZY (J. McMurray) for interference in the home straight. After viewing the patrol footage and hearing submissions from the riders and trainers of both runners, Stewards found from the 150m ALLEZIZZY shifted out under pressure taking FLYING TYROL wider on the track and that approaching the winning post, FLYING TYROL was bumped and became unbalanced when ALLEZIZZY continued to shift out under pressure. Bearing in mind the manner in which both horses finish the race off and the half length margin, Stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was declared on the semaphored placings. At a subsequent inquiry, Apprentice J. McMurray was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for permitting his mount to shift out under pressure in the home straight.
PERFECT POINT – Slow to begin and obliged to steady from heels when tightened between runners. Near the 600m, steadied from heels when the pace of the race steadied.
MONEY BEAR – Bumped on jumping.
ALL ABOUT LEWIS – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Raced wide throughout.
ALLEZIZZY – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Shifted out under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ALLEZIZZY revealed lacerations to both the inside and outside of the mouth.
FLYING TYROL – Near the 700m, steadied from heels when the pace of the race steadied.
NATIVE BEAUTY – Hampered on jumping and shortly after was restrained to obtain a position with cover.
ELESPRIT MISS – Bumped shortly after the start, steadied from heels and over raced when attempting to restrain to a position.
PABALLO – When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of the gelding, Trainer J. Moore indicated he had recently stepped up the amount of work in trackwork for PABALLO, and that the stable was confident of a forward showing today. Stewards noted the explanation.
ANTHROPICA – Raced wide throughout.
Race 7: SEARLES GARDEN PRODUCTS RATINGS BAND 0 - 55 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 43 1200 M
KUZCO LAD – Raced wide throughout. Laid out and made the home turn awkwardly.
CRAZY EYED FRED – Slow to begin then bumped. Over raced in the early stages and inclined to lay out rounding the 800m turn.
GUS THE BUS – Shifted out under pressure near the 100m.
HOLY TROJAN – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped SALACIA. Raced wide in the early stages.
FLY LIKE HELEN – Put in an awkward stride approaching the 600m.
AVOID THE MISSTRES – Slow to begin. Made the 800m turn awkwardly and shifted out. Jockey J. Bayliss reported his mount was inclined to hang out throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
SALACIA – Buffeted shortly after the start between runners.
MAGIC TALENT – Slow to begin. Held up between the 500m until the entrance to the home straight. Near the 100m, steadied from the heels of GUS THE BUS which shifted out under pressure.
PAPER COWBOY – Shifted out at the start.
OPAQUELY – Bumped shortly after the start when PAPER COWBOY shifted out.
Race 8: VIETNAM VETERANS CUP FREE ENTRY SUNDAY 25TH AUGUST RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 46 1500 M
CLUSTER'S REIN – Passing the winning post on the first occasion, taken wider on the track when DUCHESS OF MILAN laid out. Raced wide for the majority.
KNIGHT BATCHELOR –When ask to comment on the disappointing performance, Jockey C. Meehan could offer no explanation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer J. Moore was advised in light of today’s poor performance, a TAB bar would be placed on KNIGHT BATCHELOR until the gelding’s performance improves to the requisite standard.
SCOTTISH PRINCE – Held up from the 400m until the entrance to the home straight. Shifted in under pressure near the 100m.
SOKUDO – Began awkwardly. Raced wide for the majority.
SARODEC – Slow to begin and lost ground. Approaching the 200m, had to be steadied when LATE NIGHT DEVIL shifted out momentarily before being corrected by its rider. Raced wide for the majority.
ALPINE LADY – Near the 100m, had to be steadied when SCOTTISH PRINCE shifted in under pressure. Jockey J. Bayliss was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
MARCADA – Trainer J. Gleeson was reprimanded pursuant to LR 67(1) for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time. Began awkwardly. Rounding the home turn, held up and had to be steadied. A short distance later approaching the 100m, had to be steadied when ITALIAN VIRTUOSO shifted out.
DUCHESS OF MILAN – Passing the winning post on the first occasion, laid out taking CLUSTER'S REIN wider on the track. Raced wide for the majority.
LATE NIGHT DEVIL – Near the 200m, shifted out momentarily before being corrected by its rider.
IS SWEET (NZ) – Laid out passing the winning post on the first occasion and made the crossing awkwardly resulting in LATE NIGHT DEVIL being obliged to check away from heels, shifting out and bumping ALPINE LADY resulting in both runners being hampered.
