GENERAL

Due to threatening weather conditions and after consultation with the Laura Amateur Turf Club, it was decided that in the best interests of safety for all concerned, the starting times of Races 2 to 5 be brought forward in an effort to ensure completion of the program.

Race 1: PATRON BILL WARE QTIS MAIDEN PLATE 1000m

ROCKET OF GOLD – Jockey B Swaffer reported the gelding was inclined to race ungenerously for a short distance approaching the 900m when placed in restricted room, and was reluctant to stretch out due to resenting the kickback in running.

Race 2: SPONSORS RATINGS BAND 0 - 50 HANDICAP 1000m

TWICE THE STYLE – Was slowly away after beginning awkwardly.

SAMUEL JAMES – Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority.

AHERN – Raced wide rounding the home turn.

Following the running of this event Stewards amended the track rating to a Good 3.

Race 3: LAURA 10,000 CLASS 3 PLATE 1000m

HUNTER CAULFIELD – Was slowly away. Was inclined to lay in under pressure down the running.

IN AKITA – Was slowly away after beginning awkwardly. Jockey F Edwards advised that in his opinion the mare, which trailed the field throughout, would be better suited on a roomier circuit.

Race 4: LAURA BRACELET CLASS B HANDICAP 1200m

EVIL EYE MAC - Lost ground when buffeted between runners soon after jumping.

IN KOBE – Was unable to muster pace in the early stages.

HUNGRY HORSE – Raced 3 wide without cover in the early and middle stages.

Race 5: PIONEER CUP CLASS 6 PLATE 1200m

I’M NOT SURE – Was slowly away.

RYLEE’S SAGA – Was taken in approaching the 1000m by another which was shifting in when not clear to do so.

THE BEE’S KNEES – Had to be checked and lost ground when forced in near the 1000m due to tightening from the outside.

ROBBERS ROOST – Was severely checked and lost considerable ground near the 1000m due to tightening from the outside.

SPACE TIME – Was hampered near the 900m by another runner which shifted in when not clear to do so. Was inclined to lay in under pressure down the running. Jockey B Swaffer was fined the sum of $100 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for excessive whip use prior to the 100m.

On returning to scale Jockey B Swaffer who rode 2nd placed SPACE TIME lodged an objection against ONE FOR THE MONEY (M Kai) being placed 1st on the grounds of alleged interference near the 900m. After hearing evidence from the connections of both runners and viewing the available patrol footage, which clearly illustrated that SPACE TIME was hampered and had to be restrained at that point, due to being tightened to the inside of ONE FOR THE MONEY which was shifting in, Stewards could not be satisfied that the amount of ground lost by SPACE TIME in the incident was in excess of the 2 lengths margin which separated the 2 horses at the finish of the race. Consequently Jockey Swaffer’s objection was dismissed and Correct Weight was declared on the Judge’s numbers. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey M Kai was reprimanded for careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a).

At an inquiry following the running of this event Jockey M Kai pleaded guilty to careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount ONE FOR THE MONEY to shift in under riding tightening the running of RYLEE’S SAGA (K Stone), which was forced in onto the running of THE BEE’S KNEES (App. R Shred) which was in turn taken in onto the running of ROBBERS ROOST (K Rockett), causing that gelding to blunder and lose its position. Both RYLEE’S SAGA and THE BEE’S KNEES were also hampered in this incident. Jockey Kai’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 11 days to commence at midnight Saturday June 30th 2018 up to and including midnight Wednesday July 11th 2018. In determining penalty Stewards, took into account Jockey Kai’s admission of guilt and his good record in relation to the rule.

Race 6: 2018 LAURA CUP WEIGHT FOR AGE 1450m

AMULETO – Was fractious in the barriers.

DEXTEROUS – Was fractious in the barriers. Was hampered and forced wider near the 1200m turn by another runner which became unbalanced and shifted out.

FIVE STARS – Became unbalanced rounding the 1200m turn and shifted out hampering another runner.

CONCRETUS – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

MR BOXVALE – Shifted in making contact with the running rail near the 1000m. Was restrained around the heels of a tiring runner near the 100m.
