Race 4: NUTRI-LICK BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP 1400M BADGE OF GAMENESS- Jockey C Rogers advised Stewards that when approaching the 400m as she was trying to improve into the race her horse failed to respond to her riding. Began to weaken from that point. WAITAKERE- Travelled wide for the majority of the race. BEYOND MARS- Declared a late scratching by Stewards at 2.30pm under AR75(2)(b) acting under Vet advice due to the horse sustaining an injury to its near foreleg after running off from his allocated tie up stall. No deductions applied to the late scratching as betting had not commenced on this race at this time. Trainer R Frazer advised Stewards it was now his intention to retire the horse. However, Mr Frazer was advised that a Veterinary Certificate would be required prior to the gelding ever racing again. BAUHINIA BEANS- Shortly after going onto the track for this race, the gelding began to run off with Appr S Wilcock having difficulty in restraining it. Appr Wilcock was eventually able to pull up the horse with the assistance of the Clerk of the Course. She then dismounted it approximately 200m from the barriers where it was then examined by the attending Veterinarian and subsequently passed fit to start. As the gelding approached the barriers Starter Mr L Connolly advised Stewards that Appr Wilcock had sought the horse to be declared a late scratching due to an ill-fitting girth. A replacement girth was sent to the barriers by Stewards a short time later. Appr Wilcock was then unable to resaddle the horse safely and therefore, Stewards declared BAUHINIA BEANS a late scratching at 3.10pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on the horse to be refunded less the following deductions to apply: ANACHEEVA LAD- Win 9c and place 11c, BUDDIE OLLIE- 2nd place, 11c and WAITAKERE- 3rd place,12c. A subsequent inquiry was held regarding the matter. Stewards considered submissions from Trainer Mr W Pugsley and Appr S Wilcock. It was determined that the incorrect girth and the limited experience of the barrier staff had contributed significantly to BAUHINIA BEANS being declared a late scratching. Stewards ordered that no further action would be required at this time. BUDDY OLLIE- Began awkwardly NALSSENDORI- Raced at the rear of the field for the majority of the event.
