GENERAL
 
As apprentice B. Grylls was not riding at today's meeting, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
 
Race 1: CHANNEL 7 QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1050M
 
NATURE'S WAY – Had to be restrained when racing greenly in the early stages.
 
SHORT CIRCUIT – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Momentarily steadied near the 300m when another runner shifted out marginally.
 
CRAIGLEA CETINA – Raced greenly throughout.
 
CRAIGLEA OREA – Raced greenly throughout.
 
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 4.
 
Race 2: UBET MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M
 
GENERAL BEERS – Slow to begin and then raced greenly and wide in the early and middle stages.
 
OUR TAX CI – Slow to begin.
 
TROPICAL STORM – Slow into stride.
 
ZATORIO – Inclined to overrace in the early stages. Shifted in near the 300m, bumping with another runner.
 
BELMONT TURF BELLE – Raced wide on straightening.
 
PRINCESS TORIO – Stewards permitted N. Day to replace S. Watkins as rider.
 
SPARKLING GIFT – Raced four wide without cover in the early stages. Bumped by another runner near the 300m. When questioned regarding the horse's seemingly disappointing performance, apprentice C. Bayliss advised stewards that the mare had travelled well to the home turn but had failed to respond to his urgings down the running and was disappointing.
 
Race 3: R. MULES RACEDAY 29TH DECEMBER QTIS 3YO H'CAP – 1300M
 
SIMPLY MARVELLOUS – Rider G. Kliese advised that in his opinion his mount had not been suited by the tight circuit, although the horse had finished the race off fairly. Trainer Mr B. Williams advised that the horse would now be spelled.
 
RUBY REMEDY – Slow into stride.
 
RUSTY SCOOTER – Slow into stride.
 
PURBECK – Shifted wide on straightening.
 
Following this event stewards questioned both official starters regarding the reasons why this race was started approximately 3½ minutes before the scheduled starting time. It was established that this incident had occurred due to a misunderstanding. Stewards reminded both officials of their responsibility to ensure that races are not started before the scheduled advertised starting time.
 
Race 4: DAILY MERCURY BENCHMARK 70 H'CAP – 1300M
 
DUAN MAJOR – Slow into stride. Rider S. Sheargold advised that the horse raced in its normal rearward position, however after a six-week break from racing had been unable to sprint when called upon in today's event. Connections advised that it is now the intention to spell the horse immediately.
 
CAPE LUCK – Inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages.
 
Race 5: HAMDEN P & C BENCHMARK 55 H'CAP – 1560M
 
DRAGSTER – Overraced in the middle stages.
 
PERFECTLY ALIGNED – Began awkwardly.
 
ROCKCHESTA – Worked hard out wide to obtain the lead near the 900m.
 
MONTANA HERO – Overraced in the middle stages.
 
MYSTIC HARMONY – Slow to begin.
 
WULFIES LADY – Slow to begin.
 
MY SISTER SUE – Slow to begin.
 
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 3.
 
Race 6: MTC 100 CLUB BENCHMARK 75 H'CAP – 1050M
 
NATURAL DANCER – Shifted in near the 750m, inconveniencing another runner. Apprentice Z. White was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
 
SHEPIKTUS – Momentarily inconvenienced by another runner which shifted in near the 750m.
 
WHITSUNDAY EXPRESS – Slow into stride. Had to be steadied off the heels of another runner near the 850m.
 
CANNY AND THE JET – Declared a late scratching at 3:07 pm after being fractious in the barriers, becoming momentarily cast and dislodging rider N. Day. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, bookmakers were ordered that all monies wagered on CANNY AND THE JET be refunded in full, and further that all successful wagers placed on the event prior to 3:07 pm be subject to deductions of 17 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 15 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets. Trainer Mr L. Wright was advised that CANNY AND THE JET would have to obtain two consecutive barrier certificates prior to being permitted to start in a race again.
 
ZIZA SPIRIT – Had to be restrained near the 850m when tightened by another runner which shifted in. Jockey S. Sheargold was fined $100 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram over the horse's allotted weight.
 
VAINACIOUS – Worked strongly towards the barriers in its preliminary, resulting in the saddle shifting. The horse was then examined by the veterinary surgeon, cleared to start and resaddled. Shifted in near the 850m, momentarily tightening another runner, which had to be restrained. Jockey N. Summers was issued with a severe reprimand.
 
Race 7: PAYNE PRINT BENCHMARK 60 H'CAP – 1100M
 
FOUR EXCEL – Raced four wide without cover in the early and middle stages.
 
BON TEMPS – Raced four wide in the early stages. Shifted in marginally near the 700m, causing minor tightening to runners to the inside.
 
JEWELLERY THIEF – As S. Watkin was unable to fulfil his engagement due to transport difficulties, L. Attard was substituted as rider.
 
WHITEHOUSE AFFAIR – Bumped with another runner on jumping. Steadied near the 700m when another runner shifted in marginally and then was inclined to overrace and had to be steadied for some distance thereafter. Unable to obtain clear running in the home straight and went to the line without being fully tested.
 
LA PRENSA – Steadied near the 700m when another runner shifted in marginally.
 
THE TEENY HASS – Slow to begin.
 
PLAIN 'N' SIMPLE – Bumped with another runner on jumping.
