MACKAY TURF CLUB TUESDAY MAY 16th  2017

Stewards today concluded an adjourned inquiry from Race 5 Mackay Turf Club on Tuesday 16th May 2017 into the reason why PULSAR (App.Z White) had to be checked, losing its rightful running, passing the 200m.
After hearing further evidence and viewing patrol footage of the incident Stewards, acting under the provisions of AR137(a), found Jockey S Watkin guilty of a charge of careless riding in that passing the 200m he permitted his mount COVENTRY to shift out when insufficiently clear of PULSAR (App. Z White) causing that gelding to be checked and lose its rightful running. Jockey Watkin’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 days to commence at midnight Saturday May 27th 2017 up to and including midnight Saturday June 3rd 2017.

PULSAR – When questioned into the tactics adopted today on the gelding rider A. Butler stated that due to the lack of pace in the middle stages he elected to allow the horse to improve forward as he was mindful of its heavy impost today and felt it would be advantageous to allow the horse to be closer when they sprinted. Stewards note his explanation.

GOT YOU DOUBLE – When asked to explain the gelding‘s performance today rider A. Coome stated it felt comfortable when leading and travelled well however once placed under pressure leaving the 500m the horse failed to respond to his riding and was very disappointing and as such he did not pressure it to the line. Trainer A. Cameron stated he was at a loss to explain the performance, will monitor the geldings progress when back at the stables and will have further veterinary examination performed and will advise Stewards of any findings. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
