Cullen reported that his mount had a tendency to hang in and out at various stages throughout the event, and after passing the 500m failed to respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards inquired into the reason for jockey Peter Cullen returning to scale overweight. After hearing submissions put forward by jockey Cullen, stewards were not satisfied that due to the extenuating circumstances he was in breach of AR145 and therefore took no further action. CRAIGLEA VIRTUE – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn. DANSARA – Laid out when placed under pressure in the home straight. CRAIGLEA RUBBLE – After leading for the majority of the event, weakened in the home straight. Rider L. Tilley was of the view that the step in journey may have been a contributing factor in its performance today. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Stable representative S.Johnston was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to the horse racing again. Race 3: Cheryl Green Tanning Benchmark 70 H’cap – 1560m TEXT BOOK – As there was no other apprentice available Stewards permitted apprentice L. GRAND EMPEROR – Bumped shortly after the start. Raced three wide without cover for the entire race. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, apprentice N. Fazackerley advised that instructions given by trainer T. Bannon were to have the gelding settle in a midfield position if possible, however after travelling a short distance after the start and being caught in a three wide position without cover, he was unable to settle the gelding and therefore allowed it to stride forward without pressure before obtaining a position three wide joint leader passing the 900m. When asked if there was an opportunity to obtain cover, he stated due to the horse’s racing manners of overracing he was reluctant to over-restrain his mount and was unable to obtain cover. Stewards however were of the view that apprentice Fazackerley had erred in his judgement, and felt he should have made a greater effort in attempting to find cover, but did not believe he was culpable under the rules for such error. Stewards advised him that in similar circumstances they would expect him to show better judgement. WORTHY HERO – Bumped shorty after the start. FRIENDLY DRAGON – Held up rounding the home turn.
