SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

15th April 2021 at Gladstone Racecourse
Stewards enquired into the circumstances regarding the use of an unlicenced track work rider by trainer Mr P Pengelly. After hearing submissions Stewards were comfortably satisfied that Mr Pengelly took reasonable steps to ascertain that the rider used was licensed. Due to the mitigating circumstances the Stewards deemed no further action was necessary other than to remind Mr Pengelly to ensure in future he ensures any rider used by him is fully licenced.

GENERAL
Due to the abandonment of several meetings today all race times were rescheduled to allow the Mackay meeting to be televised on Sky 1 racing channel. The rescheduled times were as follows:

Race 1 – 12.52pm
Race 2 – 1.27pm
Race 3 – 2.06pm
Race 4 – 2.46pm
Race 5 – 3.23pm
Race 6 – 3.58pm
Race 7 – 4.39pm


Race 1: S.H. TAIT & CO CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS Maiden Handicap 1200 metres

DANGERFIELD – Hung inwards early stages and raced wide middle stages.

MOUNT DUMARESQ – Raced wide early stages. Apprentice rider Z Llloyd was reprimanded for using his whip on seven occasions two more than permitted prior to the 100m pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii). Stewards took into consideration this was Mr Lloyd’s first breach of the respective rule.

MAN ONA MISSION – Slow to begin. Lost its nearside winker near the 400m.

TIDES OF TOKYO – Over raced early and middle stages. Rider A Jones advised after over racing through the early stages it had failed to sprint with the leaders over the final stages and could only put that down to the prevailing track conditions.

SNEAKY GAL – Jumped away awkwardly.

Following the running of this race track conditions were downgraded to a Soft 5 retrospective to race one.


Race 2: TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1100 metres

ISIS TURBO – Clipped heals and blundered shortly after jumping away. Held up briefly approaching the 200m. Laid inwards near the 150m with rider S Sheargold obliged to stop and straighten his mount. A warning was placed on the pre-race manners of the gelding.

OUR IRISH EMPEROR – Over raced early stages. Laid in when placed under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

SIR ARCHIBALD – Laid inwards over the concluding stages.

RIVER DAISY – Jumped away awkwardly. Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight and was obliged to shift ground to improve its position.

FAIRYBOWER FLYER – A warning was placed on the pre-race manners of the filly.

MAHKOTA ROSE – Jumped away awkwardly.

Rider S Sheargold was examined by the QAS following this race and cleared to ride his remaining engagements.


Race 3: SMARTSTATE RENTALS Class 3 Plate 1100 metres….

DOUBLE MAJOR – Hampered shortly after jumping away. Laid outwards in the home straight.

DAWN TOO GOOD – Raced keenly over the early and middle stages. Laid out inside the final 200m.

INTIMIDATING – Slow to begin. Held up for clear racing room approaching the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

MAN O' ROSS – Examined pre-race by the veterinarian and cleared to race. Raced wide early stages.

BITTERGREYMAGIC – Shifted out shortly after jumping away. Over raced early and middle stages.

SCENT OF FEAR – Awkwardly placed on the heels of CHEYENNE BEACH approaching the 900m. Laid in when placed under pressure in the straight.

CHEYENNE BEACH – Raced wide early stages.

HOLLYWOOD DREAMING – Hampered shortly after jumping away. Over raced early and middle stages.


Race 4: MORE THAN JUST A RACECOURSE OPEN Handicap 1560 metres

Correct weight was delayed to allow rider N Thomas to view Stewards footage of the final 400m. After viewing the footage Mr Thomas elected not to proceed with an objection and correct weight was declared.

BERING SEA – Raced wide early stages. Became awkwardly placed on heels on entering the home straight. Had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 200m

BREAK MY STRIDE – Jumped outwards at the start and was hampered by PROANE. Hung outwards rounding the bend and in the home straight.

PROANE – Jumped away awkwardly and hampered by BREAK MY STRIDE. Over raced early and middle stages. Raced wide throughout.

CINNAMON MISSILE – Blundered passing the 500m.

INDERNILE – Slow into stride. Blundered passing the 500m. Held up for racing room approaching the 350m. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

SCHAPPOSE (NZ) – Laid inwards near the 150m. Apprentice rider A Donald was reprimanded for using her whip on seven occasions two more than permitted prior to the 100m pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii). Stewards took into account this was Ms Donald’s first breach of the rule.

Following this race a track inspection was conducted by jockeys and Stewards in relation to an area of the track near the 500m. After the inspection all parties were satisfied with the track conditions and the meeting continued as programmed.


Race 5: MACKAY CUP SATURDAY 24TH JULY BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1300 metres

LET'S GO BOBBY – Over raced early and middle stages.

GREAT FOX – Raced wide throughout. Laid in when placed under pressure in the straight,

DON'T DOUBT LARA – Over raced early and middle stages.

KEFALONIA – Rider C Whiteley was unable to offer an explanation for the disappointing performance of KEFALONIA. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.

STRIKE A BEAU – Over raced early and middle stages. Raced wide in the early stages and passing the 900m became awkwardly placed on heels when attempting to obtain cover. Rider B Thomson advised the Stewards the gelding had bitten its tongue during the running causing some minor internal bleeding to the mouth.

SIR VAN DYKE (GB) – Hampered shortly after jumping away. Laid outwards in the home straight.

Following the running of this event the track was downgraded further to a Soft 6 retrospective to race five.

Race 6: BARRY WILLIAMS MEMORIAL LIGHTNING OPEN Handicap 1100 metres

BRAD – Jumped away awkwardly. Laid inwards in the home straight.

OZARK – Slow to begin.

GYPSY TOFF – Apprentice rider A Jones was questioned regarding the tactics she adopted when leading over the early and middle stages. She advised it was her intention to settle handy from the good draw and then hand up the lead to MORENO who was a noted front runner. She stated in hindsight she should have allowed MORENO to lead and settle in the trail. Ms Jones acknowledged she was not aware of the speed they were travelling over the early and middle stages. Stewards concurred with Ms Jones summation of her ride and that she should have made a better effort to restrain her mount to allow it to finish the race off in a stronger manner. Stewards were satisfied the ride did not reach the threshold of a charge however advised her in similar circumstances she should ensure she gives her mount the opportunity to obtain its best finishing position. Trainer J McConachy confirmed the instructions given to Ms Jones.

BEST GUESS – Momentarily inconvenienced passing the 900m by FRATELLINO which shifted out marginally.

STAR OF O'REILLY (NZ) – Rider C Whiteley was spoken to regarding the manner he used his whip in the home straight. Laid inwards over the concluding stages

OUR ALICIA'S LANE – Shifted inwards shortly after the start before being straightened. Held up in the home straight when FRATELLINO shifted outwards.

FRATELLINO – Had its hind quarter turned shortly after the start. Laid outwards in the straight.

TOY BOY – Hampered passing the 900m by MORENO (NZ), which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Jockey D Simmons, rider of MORENO (NZ), was reminded of his obligations to be fully clear when shifting ground in future. Had to be steadied over the final stages after FRATELLINO shifted outwards. Apprentice rider E Cass was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for allowing her mount to shift outwards when insufficiently clear.

WREN PLUCKED – Awkwardly placed on heels of FRATELLINO shortly after the start.


Race 7: RACING AGAIN FRIDAY 16TH JULY BENCHMARK 60 Handicap 1800 metres

BROMES – Over raced early and middle stages. Became awkward in its stride passing the crossing at the 1600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

TRACKMAN (NZ) – Slow into stride.

ANNMARIE – Raced keenly early stages. Apprentice A Donald was reprimanded for failing to fully ride her mount out to the finish pursuant to AR131(b). Stewards were satisfied after reviewing the footage her riding did not affect her finishing placing and also took into consideration her inexperience.

EXELANT MOSH – Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.

LETS TORQUE A DEEL – Rider W D’Avila was suspended for 11 days from midnight the 6th of July – midnight the 17th of July 2021 for using his whip on nine occasions four more than permitted prior to the 100m under AR132(7)(a)(ii). When considering penalty Stewards took into account this was Mr D’Avila’s seventh breach of the rule since August 2020.
