As apprentices J Devine and L O’Donnell were indisposed at today’s meeting, rider replacements were made as per the steward’s race day summary. Both apprentices were advised that they require medicals prior to resuming race riding.
Stewards permitted the overweights as listed in the stewards’ race day summary.
Race 1: SKY RACING CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1560m)
BRASCO – Bumped the inside running rail near the 1100m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
GOING NUCLEAR – Re-shod upon arrival on-course after losing its near-hind plate and subsequently underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Was fractious in the barriers prior to jumping. Laid in rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight when placed under pressure. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey C Jokic advised that in her opinion the gelding is better suited to be ridden when able to obtain a position with cover, rather than on this occasion where the gelding had settled further forward which proved detrimental in the gelding’s overall chances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
RELEASE LE MISSILE – Trainer D Amos was reprimanded under the provisions of LR67 for the late rider declaration of jockey A Butler. In determining penalty, stewards were mindful that this was Trainer Amos’ first offence under this particular rule. Slow into stride. Raced keenly in the early stages when being restrained to obtain a position with cover. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
BO BO BEWARE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn and in the early stages of the home straight before electing to shift out off the heels of GOING NUCLEAR to obtain clear running nearing the 100m. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
ENCROACHMENT – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, specifically the gelding leading, jockey J Stanley stated that after beginning well from the inside barrier, he identified that there was an apparent lack of pace in the early stages of the event, therefore elected to settle his mount further forward.
NAHEIGHTKAY – Raced keenly in the early stages. Apprentice O Kendal was reminded of her obligations under the provisions of AR132(6)(b) for using her whip when out of contention.
Race 2: LADBROKES RACING CLUB QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP (1300m)
TIME TO PROPHET – Change of tactics; to settle further forward in event if circumstances permitted. Settled mid-field. Shifted in shortly after the start and bumped SCRUB CHAIN. Raced keenly in the early stages before being steadied to avoid the heels of UNDERRATED near the 1100m before continuing to race keenly for some distance after. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey A Butler advised although over-racing in the early stages and the slow tempo set may have proved detrimental to the filly’s finishing chances, he was overall disappointed with the performance, adding that the filly had performed below expectations throughout its preparation. Trainer G Holt stated that they were also disappointed with the performance and concurred with jockey Butler’s comments regarding the filly’s disappointing efforts during this current preparation. Ms Holt advised they will look to undertake a further veterinary examination inclusive of blood results and undertook to report back to Steward on any significant findings.
SCRUB CHAIN – Bumped shortly after the start by TIME TO PROPHET which shifted inwards. Raced keenly in the early stages. Jockey R Silvera Olivera pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(5) for using his whip on 21 times in totality, with 6 of these being prior to the 100m. Jockey Silvera Olivera’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 days, which was ordered to commence Sunday, 5 January 2025 and to conclude Sunday, 12 January 2025, directly following a careless riding suspension occurred at the Rockhampton meeting on Thursday, 19 December. In determining penalty, stewards considered jockey Silvera Olivera’s good record, guilty plea, the QRIC Whip penalty guidelines and took into consideration the suspension that jockey Silvera Olivera occurred in previous days. Jockey Silvera Olivera was advised of his rights to an appeal.
UNDERRATED – Over-raced in the early stages.
WOODSTOCK ROCK – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Commenced to shift out under pressure over the concluding stages before being corrected by its rider.

When asked to comment on the performance, jockey J Murphy stated that the gelding never travelled comfortably throughout the event and when he held concern with the gelding’s action in the home straight, he elected to ease his mount down. Jockey Murphy further reported that the gelding took the crossing awkwardly passing the finish post and when concerned something was amiss, he elected to dismount. A post-race veterinary examination revealed mild-lameness in the near-foreleg due to its plate becoming displaced. Trainer G Holt was advised that given the comments and concerns of jockey Murphy, the gelding would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
