Race Day Stewards’ Report

Mount Isa Thoroughbreds

Date: 09/05/2020

Weather: Fine

Track: Sand/Dirt

Rail: True

Stewards Panel: C Warren (Chairman), R Smith (700m & Birdcage)

Officials: C Moore (Starter), L Winks (Judge), Dr K Stretton (Vet & Swab attendant), Stewards (Clerk of Scales)

GENERAL

Stewards accepted the explanations tendered by Trainers Mr T Krogh, Mr J Bawden and Miss T Parry for the late notification of riders at todays meeting.

Race 1 –  Ratings Band 0-60 handicap 1450m

ECHELON ROSE- Raced wide the majority.

CHANDON KISSES- Raced wide throughout.

RAPTOR- Raced wide the majority.

KING SOLOMON- Raced wide throughout. Jockey J Hoopert was fined the sum of $100 under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for his use of the whip prior to the 100m.

Race 2 – Open Handicap 1450m

ROCK TSAR- Raced wide throughout.

MOORE ALPHA- Raced wide throughout.

LE DRAMA- Post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils in running. Acting under the provisions of AR79(1)(4)(a)(b) advised Trainer Mr J Morris that, as this was the first such occurance, the gelding would be banned from racing for a period of three (3) months and be subject to a satisfactory 1000m gallop in the presence of a Steward prior to again being permitted to start in a race.

Race 3 – Open Handicap 1000m

Declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey J Babarovich rider of 4th place getter, SAFDIE, to view the patrol footage to ascertain whether grounds for a protest were evident. After viewing the footage Jockey Babarovich advised Stewards he wished to lodge a protest against 3rd place getter SPLIT THE ATOM (J Hoopert) sighting alleged interference near the 700m. After viewing the footage and hearing submissions from connections Stewards were of the opinion that passing the 700m SPLIT THE ATOM, which was on an inward trajectory, did bump SAFDIE inwards and onto the hindquarters of READY ZAIM FIRE, before continuing to shift in and dictate the line of SAFDIE further inwards and across the heels of READY ZAIM FIRE, forcing Jockey Babraovich to check his mount loosing ground and momentum. As such Stewards were of the opinion that the ground lost by SAFDIE was greater than the margin between the two runners of 3/4 of a length the protest was upheld and correct weight declared on the amended numbers of 6-7-4-3. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey J Hoopert was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) the particulars of the charge being that Jockey J Hoopert (SPLIT THE ATOM) did permitt his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear and did not exercise sufficient effort in straightening his mount and as a result bumped SAFDIE (J Babarvich) inward and then dictated SAFDIE’s line inwards forcing that runner onto heels and it having to be checked and loose its rightful running. Jockey J Hooperts license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 17/05/2020 up to and including 25/05/2020. In considering penalty Stewards took into consideration the degree of interference, which was deemed to be in the low range, as well as Jockey Hooperts good record in relation to the rule.

WORLD OF PAIN- Commenced to race ungenerously passing the 800-600m.

CLATEAU- Raced ungenerously momentarily passing the 700m before resuming to race tractably.

SPANISH HURRICANE- Raced wide thoughout.

SNIPPY STRATEGIC- Raced wide throughout.

Race 4 – Benchmark 60 Handicap 1000m

BOLD SAM- Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped with another runner. Shifted wide early to avoid kick back.

IN TWO MINDS- Bumped with another runner which shifted out on jumping. Jockey T Brummell was fined the sum of $100 under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for his use of the whip prior to the 100m.

ALMIGHTY GOL- Bumped with another runner on jumping.

MANDALONG PASS- Bumped with another runner on jumping. Raced wide throughout.

ORTEGA LANE-  Commenced to race ungenerously passing the 600m before shifting wider to avoid the kickback.

LORD WINDERMERE- Raced wide throughout.

Race 5 – Benchmark 45 Handicap 1200m

IMAPOET- Reared as the start was effected. Raced wide the majority. Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have sustained a minor injury to its right eye from the kickback in running.

SUGAR RAY RED- Began awkwardly and shifted in. Commenced to race ungenerously from the 1100-900m. Jockey J Esser advised he believed the gelding to have resented the heavy kickback at that point.

Stewards inquired into the reasons AYLA’S ANGEL (M Gray) appeared to check passing the 600m. After reviewing the race footage and hearing evidence from the riders involved it was ascertained that CAITLIN EMILY (J Babarovich), which was racing ungenerously at that point, shifted in abruptly and impeded the running of AYLA’S ANGEL, which was improving to its inside, causing that runner to check and loose ground. Jockey J Babarovich was Severely reprimanded as a result of this incident. In considering penalty Stewards took into consideration the degree of interference as well as the racing manners of CAITLIN EMILY.

Race 6 – Class 6 Plate 1200m

LE CHIFFRE- Bumped with another runner on jumping.

TANGO RAIN- Bumped with another runner on jumping.

PRETTY SMART- After beginning on terms with the field failed to muster speed to maintain its position.

Race 7 – QTIS Maiden Plate 1200m

GREY ARTEMIS- Was found to be lame in the near-side front and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 1015am. Trainer Mr J Babarovich was advised a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to the filly again being permitted to start in a race.

PRINCIPLE- Began awkwardly.

ON TOP ONCE MORE- Began awkwardly. Momentarily hampered by another runner which shifted in near the 800m.
