QRIC Stewards Report

NANANGO RACE CLUB: 12th September 2020
Weather: Fine Track: Firm 2 Rail: True
Stewards: K Daly (Chairman), C Fedrick
Starter: K Dennien
Clerk of Scales: B Webb
Judge: P Chilton
Veterinarian: Dr L Schiemer

General:
As W O’Connell was ill, riding changes were made as per the race day summary sheet. W O’Connell was advised he must provide a medical clearance before resuming race riding.

Race 1: MAIDEN PLATE 1000 Metres
ARRIVERDERCI ROMA – jumped in at the start.  Tightened for room and had to be steadied near the 900 metres when placed in restricted room.  Rider H Richardson reported the gelding was not suited by today’s firm racing surface.
BOBBYBOUCHE – crowded for room near the 900 metres.
CRAIGLEA DANIEL – laid in under pressure over the final 100 metres.
YOUPE – raced three-wide without cover throughout.
EMMABROOKE – slow to begin.
THE MOA FACTOR – slow to begin.  Raced wide in the early stages.
MISHANI FORTUNE – when asked to comment on the below-market performance, rider C Small stated after racing back in the field the filly then resented the dirt kick-back and failed to let down as expected.
RAINING RICHES – shifted in when not fully clear near the 900 metres crowding BOBBYBOUCHE which in turn was taken in and crowded ARRIVERDERCI ROMA which had to be steadied.  R Faehr, rider of RAINING RICHES, was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Race 2: BENCHMARK 60 HDCP 1000 Metres

On return to scale a protest was lodged by R Faehr, rider of fourth placegetter HARRY’S STAR against second placegetter PETITE ELLE (G Goomany) alleging interference rounding the home turn.  After taking evidence from both parties and viewing the official patrol footage, stewards were of the opinion that rounding the home turn PETITE ELLE improved to the inside of HARRY’S STAR and at a point near the 200 metres PETITE ELLE shifted out slightly resulting in both runners brushing.  Bearing in mind where the incident took place, the long-neck margin separating the runners at the finish, and how each runner finished the race off, stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was declared on the semaphored placings.

Also prior to correct weight, stewards considered an application from App M Potgieter, rider of TOECANARGIE MAN, for that gelding to be declared a non-runner on the grounds that its barrier was slow to open when the start was effected.  After taking evidence from starter K Dennien, trainer R Coveney and viewing the head-on patrol footage, it was established the barrier of TOECANARGIE MAN was slow to open resulting in the gelding losing considerable ground and acting under AR204(1)(c) TOECANARGIE MAN was declared a non-runner.  On announcement of correct weight, stewards advised all bets on TOECANARGIE MAN be refunded in full and deductions of 10 cents the win and 10 cents place to apply on all winning bets.

Prior to the running of this event, all barriers were tested and found to be in satisfactory working order.

DAVE’S VALOR – raced three-wide throughout without cover.  Made the home turn wider on the track.

GETS SMOKIN’ – slow to begin.

PETITE ELLE – race three-wide with cover throughout.  Bumped rounding the home turn.

HARRY’S STAR – bumped rounding the home turn.

Race 3: CLASS B HDCP 1200 Metres

SAVSGOLD – commenced to tire significantly leaving the 300 metres and near the 150 metres shifted out abruptly and collapsed to the track.  The horse was immediately attended to by the club Veterinary surgeon who advised SAVSGOLD had suffered a bleeding attack and was deceased. Post-mortem urine and blood samples were taken from the gelding.  Rider P Hamblin was cleared by QAS medical staff to fulfil his remaining engagements. As a result of this incident the starting times for remaining events were adjusted:

Race 4: 3:45pm
Race 5: 4:15pm.

CURRY CONNECTION – raced three-wide without cover for majority of the event.

GREY COURT – near the 800 metres shifted in despite the efforts of its rider resulting in RELIABLE LASS being placed in restricted racing room and LIFE’S A WITCH, which was racing to the inside, having to be steadied.

RELIABLE LASS – crowded for room near the 800 metres.

LIFE’S A WITCH – tightened for room and steadied near the 800 metres.

Race 4: OPEN CUP HDCP 1600 Metres

GUD ONYA – jumped away awkwardly resulting in App R Wilson losing use of her near side iron for a short distance.

CERTAIN DOUBT – rider C Small stated the gelding, in his opinion, was not suited to racing on today’s firm surface.

AIRLIE MAN – raced three-wide without cover throughout the event.

CRAIGLEA SIMMO – rider Adam Spinks was reprimanded for use of the whip on six occasions prior the 100 metres, one more than permitted.

Race 5: CLASS B HDCP 1600 Metres

Prior to declaration of correct weight, starter Mr K Dennien advised stewards he was of the belief HEATHER JOAN (Adam Spinks), drawn in barrier seven, had begun from barrier eight and FURY OF THE STORM (H Richardson), drawn in barrier eight, had begun from barrier seven.  This was subsequently confirmed on review of the head-on patrol film.  After taking into account where both FURY OF THE STORM and HEATHER JOAN settled in the early stages of the event, Stewards were of the belief this error had no material effect on either horses’ finishing position and acting under AR198(2)(a) correct weight was declared.  At a subsequent inquiry, both A Spinks and H Richardson were reprimanded and advised of their obligations under AR198(1) in ensuring their mounts begin from their allocated barrier draw.

MAHUSSEY – on arrival at the barriers, contacted near side running rail.  The mare was examined by the club Veterinarian and passed fit to start.

FURY OF THE STORM – raced three-wide in the early stages.

RIVER OF LOVE – slow to begin.

HEATHER JOAN – rider Adam Spinks was reprimanded for use of the whip on six occasions prior the 100 metres, one more than permitted.

AKLAVIK – unable to muster speed in the early stages, raced at the rear of the field before failing to run on over the concluding stages.  App R Wilson reported the gelding hung out throughout the event.  A post-race veterinary examination of AKLAVIK revealed no abnormalities.  Trainer G Schrader was advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the gelding.
