Supplementary Report

Stewards today continued an inquiry into the reason for medication being brought onto the racecourse precinct by trainer P Blackwell at the Bundaberg race meeting on 28th January 2023.

Mr Blackwell explained the reason for a bottle of Acepromazine (ACP 10) and an unused syringe being in the float used to transport his runner DAULAT MACHTIGNAGA to the race meeting was for the purpose, if necessary, to sedate the horse on the return 3:5hr return float trip to his stables.

After considering all evidence Mr Blackwell pleaded guilty to a charge under AR251(1)(b) in that he did, without written permission from Stewards, have in his possession in the horse float used to transport the racehorse DAULAT MACHTIGNAGA to the Bundaberg race meeting on Saturday 28th January, a bottle of Acepromazine that could be used to produce a prohibited substance in a horse. Mr Blackwell was fined $500.

Race 1 – Class B Handicap (800 METRES)

Declaration of correct weight was delayed allowing N Vuille, rider of TOY WHITTY, and trainer L Peterson to view the head on patrol footage of the start to determine whether the horse was afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from starter K Dennien and viewing the patrol footage it was established TOY WHITTY, which had been held by a barrier attendant just prior to the start being effected, began awkwardly as a direct result of its own barrier manners and as such the horse was declared a definite starter.

CITY CHICK – Jumped in the air at the start and lost ground. As a result, rider H Richardson lost use of her offside stirrup iron placing her at a disadvantage for some distance thereafter.

TOY WHITTY – Began very awkwardly and lost ground.

HERO’S TRINKET – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Passing the winning post shifted out abruptly towards the outside running rail resulting in apprentice S Champkin becoming unbalanced, and a short distance later being dislodged. S Champkin was attended to by QAS staff, stabilized and transported to Kingaroy Base Hospital for further treatment. A post-race veterinary examination of HERO’S TRINKET revealed no abnormality. Representative for trainer M Currie was advised the horse must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. S Champkin will require a medical clearance prior to her next race or trial ride.

LADY RASCAL – Jumped out at the start.

GERTAINE – Which was having its first start on a right-handed track, hung out rounding the home turn.

Race 2 – Maiden Plate (1000 METRES)

SAND AND OCEAN was declared a late scratching at 2:06pm on veterinary advice when the horse broke loose from the attendant in the saddling enclosure, contacted the enclosure fence resulting in its head making heavy contact with a rail. On declaration of correct weight Stewards ordered all bets on SAND AND OCEAN refunded in full and deductions of 13c win and 12c place to apply on face value of all winning wagers prior to 2:06pm.

The start of this event was delayed approximately 10 minutes top allow a replacement QAS vehicle to arrive on course.

EMPEROR TEIO – Crowded between runners at the start and lost ground.

SPILLIONAIRE – When asked to comment on tactics adopted rider K Yoshida stated the horse, which was having its first start today, raced greenly in the early stages and when placed under pressure near the 600m initially was slow to respond to his urgings, however when able to secure clear running at the entrance to the home straight SPILLIONAIRE finished the race of strongly. Jockey Yoshida added the horse would in his opinion be better suited to races over a longer distance than that of today. Stewards noted the explanation of K Yoshida.

INVANESS – Laid in despite the efforts of its rider near the 800m. Raced wide for the majority of the event.

SPRESSI – Slow to begin. Laid out rounding the home turn.

ANGELS OF FENWAY – As had not started for an extended period of time underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Trainer K Miller was reprimanded under AR106(1) for incorrectly saddling ANGELS OF FENWAY, which resulted in a delay to the starting tome of this event. When asked to comment on the performance rider M Gray stated the horse was first up for 18 months and would derive significant benefit from the run adding ANGELS OF FENWAY was not entirely comfortable on today’s firm racing surface.

HARD LANDING – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 5 – Ratings 0 – 60 Handicap (1200 METRES)

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be coughing and striding short in the near foreleg. Trainer A Briskey was advised BLUE SMARTIE would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.
