GENERAL
 
Stewards upon arrival conducted an inspection of the track and upgraded to a Good 3 at 11am.
 
SMASHING LUCAS in race 5 was declared a late scratching by Stewards at 8am due to no available rider.
 
Stewards accepted the explanations of trainers with regards to the late declaration of riders at today’s meeting.
 
 
 
Race 1: NANANGO RSL / PEDERSEN FAMILY MEMORIAL QTIS RATINGS BAND 0-60 HANDICAP 1000M
 
HEART OF MARBLE – Near the 200m hung in despite the effort of apprentice R. Thorburn, taking NO BETTER AFFAIRE in, resulting in NO BETTER AFFAIRE being crowded for room and steadied between HEART OF MARBLE and HERO’S TRINKET approaching the 100m. Whilst acknowledging R. Thorburn’s efforts in attempting to straighten his mount, he was nonetheless reminded to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. HEART OF MARBLE continued to hang in over the final 100m and was unable to be tested over the concluding stages. Trainer M. Currie was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the gelding.
 
IGBO – Apprentice O. Kendall reported that the gelding did not appreciate today’s track and may not have backed up from the last run at Roma on 9 December.
 
NO BETTER AFFAIRE – Race wide without cover. Crowded for room and steadied near the 100m.
 
CITY CHICK – Raced wide throughout.
 
LITERMONT – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination behind the barriers after making contact with the enclosure gate and was subsequently cleared to race. Steadied when crowded for room shortly after the start between MR ENCORE and CITY CHICK which shifted in.
 
ULTRA INSTINCT – A post-race veterinary examination revealed lameness in near foreleg. Trainer T. Maloney was advised that the mare would require a veterinary clearance before racing again.
 
 
Race 2: MALCOLM McCALLUM MEMORIAL MAIDEN PLATE 1200M
 
ENTERPRISE SUCCESS – Bumped at the start and shifted out wider on the track. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey T. Brooker stated her mount never travelled well within itself. She added that the gelding trialled five days ago and, in her opinion, raced flat today and that ENTERPRISE SUCCESS would appreciate a step up in distance.
 
THE MAGICIAN – Jumped out at the start making contact with ENTERPRISE SUCCESS which shifted out wider on the track. Commenced to weaken near the 700m and was eased down from the near the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed lameness in both hind legs. Trainer J. Gleeson was advised that the colt would require a veterinary clearance before racing again.
 
AKEED’S GIRL – Near the 1000m improved onto heels and was steadied.
 
BEATLEMANIA – Raced wide without cover.
 
 
Race 3: NANANGO CARAVAN SERVICE & REPAIRS RATINGS BAND 0-50 HANDICAP 1200M
 
Stewards declared DANTE ALIGHIERI a late scratching at 9.30am due to transport difficulties.
 
MISHANI SCANDAL – Trainer A. Park was reprimanded under AR106 for failing to ensure the gelding was presented with the correct saddlecloth number. Jockey L. Miller was reprimanded under AR 227(a) for negligence which led to a breach of the rules.
 
WHISTLIN’ ARROW – Raced wide throughout.
 
BETTER THAN ROSES – Commenced to hang in shortly after entering the home straight requiring apprentice R. Thorburn to stop riding and straighten near the 140m and again near the 75m. Trainer M. Currie was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the mare. Apprentice R. Thorburn was found guilty under the provisions of AR131(b) for failing to ride BETTER THAN ROSES out to the end of the race, an action which Stewards believe had a material effect on the placing’s and cost that runner third place. R. Thorburn was fined the sum of $400. In determining penalty Stewards acknowledged R. Thorburn’s relative experience as an apprentice jockey, his previous record relating to this rule, the status of the race and meeting in which he was riding in and mitigating factors, in particular BETTER THAN ROSES racing manners.
 
SISYPHEAN – Jumped out at the start forcing HEAR HEAR wider on the track. Raced wide throughout.
 
YES NO MAYBE SO – When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice H. Gillie stated that she was unable to lead as per her instructions, however she obtained cover behind the leaders and that her mount travelled well in the early stages. She added that her mount hit a flat spot from the 800m until approaching the 350m where the gelding did not travel well despite her urgings. She further added that her mount felt unbalanced approaching the home turn but then began to respond to her riding upon straightening and finished the race off well.
 
HEAR HEAR – Forced out wider on the track at start.
 
 
Race 4: NANANGO MEMBER’S CUP OPEN HANDICAP 1200M
 
GRAND PALAZZO – Slow into stride at the start.
 
OAKFIELD COMANCHE – Bumped and forced out wider on the track at the start. Jockey H. Phillips was reprimanded under the provisions of AR 132(5) for using her whip 15 times in totality.
 
DOCTOR TEEKAY – Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
KUZCO LAD – Jumped out at the start.
 
TA CHANSON – Jumped out at the start and forced OAKFIELD COMANCHE wider on the track.
 
 
Race 5: HERITAGE BANK NANANGO BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP 1600M
 
Stewards declared CONTESSA NILE a late scratching at 1.45pm due to sustaining injuries during transport to the track. Trainer R. Milne was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the mare before being permitted to race again.
 
BASILS BOW – Held up for clear running approaching the home turn.
 
TUSCANY BOUND – Faltered in its action near the 150m. A veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained an injury to the near fore fetlock. TUSCANY BOUND was subsequently euthanised on humane grounds. Post-mortem samples were taken for analysis.
 
MASTER DRUMMER – Raced wide throughout.
 
LEINSTER – Raced wide in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer P. Nipperess was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required before the gelding races again.
 
MUWARRAD – Stood flat footed and lost considerable ground. Trainer P. Duff was advised that the gelding must obtain a further barrier certificate before being permitted to race again.
