GENERAL
Due to technical problems with the photo finish equipment, the start to the race meeting was significantly delayed. As a result all races were rescheduled.
Stewards intend to interview trainer T. Austin at a later date with regards to the nomination, acceptance and scratching of his horses at today’s meeting.
Race 1: The Brown & Hurley Maiden Plate 1100m
The declaration of correct weight was delayed, when the connections of MORE THAN SUPERB, placed fifth, lodged an objection against the judges placing’s on the belief that MORE THAN SUPERB had run fourth. After taking evidence from trainer R. Frazer, jockey C. Rogers, the judges and viewing the stewards patrol footage, stewards were satisfied with the judge’s placing’s and therefore under the provisions of AR156 correct weight was given.
SAHARA GOLD (L. Appo) was tightened for room at the start between LUCKY PUNT (B. Newport) and RUBIS (J. Brand) which jumped out.
C. Rogers was fined $100 under the provisions of AR175(k) for negligence when weighing out, which resulted in MORE THAN SUPERB carrying in excess of its handicap weight.
Race 2: The Skytrans & Quilpie Shire Council Class B Handicap 1100m
CAPTAIN BERNIE (J. Brand) blundered shortly after the start.
Stewards questioned apprentice J. Brand and trainer B. Sheppard with regards to the disappointing performance of CAPTAIN BERNIE. J. Brand stated that her mount blundered shortly after the start and lost ground and as a result was required to pressure her mount from this point. She added that the gelding while racing back in the field did not appreciate the kickback and never travelled comfortably throughout and proved disappointing. B. Sheppard confirmed his disappointment in the performance adding that CAPTAIN BERNIE had either led or raced on the speed in most of its races and felt that racing back in the field had a detrimental effect on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of CAPTAIN BERNIE failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Race 3: The Bill & KJ Costello Memorial QTIS Class 3 Plate 1200m
Stewards accepted trainer W. Baker’s explanation for the late declaration of J. Brand as the rider of HAMMER ME PRINCE.
KIRKHEATON (B. Newport) and HAMMER ME PRINCE (J. Brand) bumped on jumping away.
ASTRO NASCENTE (L. Appo) began awkwardly.
CRAWFISH (C. Rogers) was slow to begin.
Near the 900m ASTRO NASCENTE was steadied from the heels of KIRKHEATON.
When questioned, jockey L. Appo (ASTRO NASCENTE) stated that he had eased his mount near the 900m as he did not want to be caught wide and obtained a position behind KIRKHEATON. He added that a short distance later his mount improved onto heels and was steadied and lost ground. He further added that his mount resented the kickback from the track however when he shifted his mount to the outside of runners from the 600m, his mount responded to his riding and ran home well from that point.
Race 4: The Elders Newmarket Open Handicap 1100m
Stewards questioned trainer M. Goodwin regarding the nomination, acceptance and scratching of JUNCTION STAR from this race. He stated that he had nominated the horse as he had identified it as a suitable race. He added that after speaking to the owners, they had advised him that they did not want to back the horse up from its last run at Mitchell on the 3 May and he therefore scratched the horse. Stewards accepted the explanation.
At the start, SECRETS REVEALED (C. Rogers) began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly making heavy contact with LONE ASSASSIN (B. Newport) resulting in the rider of that runner becoming unbalanced and LONE ASSASSIN shifting out and forcing WIGPOOL (J. Brand) wider on the track.
J. Brand (WIGPOOL) stated that after receiving some interference at the start, she rode forward in an endeavour to carry out her instructions. She added that while she was wider on the track than she would have liked, WIGPOOL was resenting the kickback from the track and for this reason she shifted her mount wider on the track.
Stewards will interview apprentice J. Brand at a later date with regards to WIGPOOL racing in a wide position from the 600m and rounding the home turn.
Race 5: APV Contracting Quilpie Cup Open Handicap 1350m
The start of this race was delayed when apprentice J. Brand (REGAL PRINCE) was required to reweigh due to a clerical error.
REGAL PRINCE knuckled on jumping away.
Near the 700m LAPEL (B. Newport) improved onto the heels of REGAL PRINCE and was steadied.
Race 6: The Brisbane Business Group Benchmark 60 Handicap 1350m
TERMS (B. Newport) began awkwardly and shifted out making heavy contact with DING DONG (E. Heinemann).
