STEWARDS REPORT – FRIDAY 23rd JULY, 1999

GENERAL

Stewards today resumed an inquiry into M. Barnhams handling of FIANDER in the Class 2 Hcp, 1400 at RJC on Friday 16th July 1999.
After hearing evidence from M. Barnham and trainer K. Fisher Stewards reprimanded Mark Barnham for failing to make more effort to restrain his mount in the middle stages of the race when there was opportunity to do so.
Trainer K. Fisher was advised that FIANDER would have to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.
Stewards took into account that FIANDER had commenced to over race from approximately the 1100 metre mark until about the 500 metre mark thus placing its rider M. Barnham at a disadvantage.
The Stewards also concluded an inquiry into the bona fides of the ownership and training of the gelding JUBILATE.
Unlicenced person Mr. P. Apps pleaded guilty to a charge under AR56B in that he failed to declared his interest in the said horse. Mr. Apps subsequently was fined the sum of $1000.
Trainer Mr. Fred Smith also pleaded guilty until a charge of LR44 that as the trainer of the gelding he failed to notify the Stewards that the horse was being trained in a different location to that of his registered stable address and that he failed to obtain the consent of the Stewards, in doing this Mr. Smith was also fined the sum of $1000.
An inquiry has been adjourned into the reason why Mr. E. Jones failed to attend the inquiry.
Stewards today interviewed apprentice jockey T. Button and his master Mr. D. Vale in relation to Apprentice Button not wearing his body protector at trackwork on the morning of the 21st July. Apprentice Button pleaded guilty to a charge under AR87c and was subsequently fined the sum of $200.
Stewards questioned apprentice T. Banks in relation to his activities in the betting ring today. Apprentice Banks was found guilty of a charge of LR53 in that he was present in the betting ring during todays race meeting. Apprentice T. Banks was subsequently fined the sum of $100.

RACE 1 MAIDEN HCP, 1400 METRES – (3 STARTERS):. THE CRAW and SPORTS CALL bumped on jumping.
IRISH ROSE made contact with the fence on two occasions near the 800 metre mark and again at the 700 metre mark.
Inside the 200 metre mark THE CRAW shifted out abruptly when placed under pressure resulting in its rider G. Evans being able to use the whip on the mare over the concluding stages.

RACE 2 CLASS 3 HCP, 1400 METRES – (9 STARTERS): CHOQUITA jumped awkwardly and continued to race ungenerously in the early and middle stages of the event.
HUNGERFORD LAD jumped awkwardly.
Apprentice M.C. Johnston was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that approaching the 1300 metre mark he permitted NOBLE WILLY to shift in resulting in EVALTER being taken in onto DANCDEN resulting in that mare becoming unbalanced and being taken in onto CHESTER IN CHARGE which was in turn crowded onto HELIAST which ultimately had to be checked by its rider.
Apprentice M.C. Johnston’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 3 Capricornia Racing Association meetings to commence at the expiration of his commitments at the Gladstone meeting on Saturday 24th July and to expire on Tuesday 3rd August, 1999.
At approximately the 700 metre mark HELIAST again had to be steadied when PLATFORM shifted in when racing ungenerously. A. Williams was reprimanded and advised that he would be expected to make more effort to keep his mounts on a straight course. In issuing a reprimand the Stewards took into account that PLATFORM was inclined to hang for some distance in the middle stages of the event.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CHESTER IN CHARGE its rider G. Evans stated that the gelding was inclined to pull slightly in the early stages of the race however he failed to respond when placed under pressure in the straight. He further added that in his opinion the gelding may not have backed up when placed at its previous start a week ago.

RACE 3 CLASS 5 HCP, 1600 METRES – (8 STARTERS):. ROSE OF ARAWATTA and MOSSTIQUE came together at the start.
HARD YARN jumped inwards and hampered MAJOR WILL.
At approximately the 700 metre mark ROSE OF ARAWATTA was obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of MAJOR WILL and made contact with the running rail at that stage.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of ROSE OF ARAWATTA apprentice M.C. Johnston stated that after being briefly tightened at the 700 metre mark the mare didn’t handle the extended loop track and failed to respond when placed under pressure in the straight.
A veterinary examination of ROSE OF ARAWATTA revealed no abnormality.

RACE 4 SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES 2YO HCP, 1300 METRES – (8 STARTERS): GOGO JAFFA shifted out hampering HIGH POWERED and WAITING TIME on jumping.
BIG ‘N’ NOBLE was slow to begin.
At approximately the 400 metre mark SPECTACULAR SLOT shifted out and bumped GOGO JAFFA.
Inside the 300 metre mark SPECTACULAR SLOT had to be eased as a result of HIGH POWERED shifting out slightly and GOGO JAFFA shifting in under pressure. G. Evans the rider of GOGO JAFFA was reprimanded and advised that he would be expected to keep his mounts of a straight course when they are shifting ground under pressure.
EDGED IN BLACK and GEM’S HOOD was both inclined to shift ground under pressure over the concluding stages.

RACE 5 CLASS 6 HCP, 1200 METRES – (7 STARTERS):. MORE TODAY and FLYING DEAL jumped awkwardly.
ALL FUN jumped outwards and hampered AGITATIONS.
At approximately the 600 metre mark FLYING DEAL became unbalanced when racing to the inside of AGITATIONS.
S. Katsidis the rider of MY STORY was reprimanded for what Stewards deemed to be excessive use of the whip when that gelding was out of contention.

RACE 6 CLASS 2 HCP 1ST DIVISION, 1000 METRES – (9 STARTERS): RHUDANNA RANCHO was slow to begin.
PIPER SANDS jumped awkwardly.
Approaching the 800 metre mark STERLING RULER had to be steadied off the heels of SPEED ALERT which shifted in. When questioned G. Booth stated that STERLING RULER was racing ungenerously at the point of the incident and this contributed to the incident.
Approaching the 500 metre mark MUNDA MAGIC was inclined to hang out. At the same stage FIGHTING MISS made the turn awkwardly taking GREENUP STREET wider on the track.

Approaching the 100 metre mark RHUDANNA RANCHO had to be eased and shifted out making contact with PIPER SANDS as a result of MUNDA MAGIC shifting out under pressure. P. Moodie the rider of MUNDA MAGIC was reprimanded and was advised that he would be expected to take more care into keeping his mounts on a straight course when they are shifting ground under pressure.

RACE 7 CLASS 2 HCP 2ND DIVISION, 1000 METRES – (10 STARTERS): HILARUS (NZ) jumped with its head in the air.
SIMPLY SPECIAL dipped on jumping away.
Leaving the 600 metre mark VOLCANIC SPARKLE was obliged to race in restricted running and as a result had to shift out across the heels of PIMPALA MAGIC resulting in VOLCANIC SPARKLE racing wide on the home turn.
Approaching the home turn NANATAN commenced to hang out and continued hanging out on the straight until it reached the outside fence. Jockey R. Goltz and trainer L. Ross were questioned regarding NANATAN’S racing manners. L. Ross stated that the gelding had never previously displayed any tendency to hang out and it was in his opinion that it was because it was the geldings first start at this track that he failed to handle the home turn. The Stewards advised Mr. Ross that the gelding would be required to trial again to their satisfaction in a trial which incorporated a turn. A veterinary examination of NANATAN revealed no abnormality.

RACE 8 CLASS 4 HCP, 1100 METRES – (10 STARTERS): BLAZING LIGHT jumped awkwardly and shifted out hampering BEAU DRUM and CADDIS FLY.
BLAZING LIGHT raced ungenerously in the middle stages and brushed the running rail on two occasions near the 700 metre mark.
BLAZING LIGHT bled for the second time and under the rules of AR53A will be barred from racing from this point onwards.

RACE 9 OPEN HCP, 1100 METRES – (11 STARTERS): ABBA JET was slow to begin.
BAY POET made contact with the side of the gate on jumping away.
INTERIM shifted out at the start taking SWEET AFFECTION out onto TURRAMURRA.
Approaching the 800 metre mark WESTERN BAND had to be steadied off the heels of ROGER’S GOLD and shifted out taking WHITSUNDAY VIEW wider on the track. The Stewards questioned N. Evans the rider of BAY POET in relation this incident. It was established that Nathan Evans had permitted BAY POET to shift in resulting in ROGER’S GOLD being obliged to race in restricted room. A short distance later N. Evans allowed the pace to slacken when reaching the lead resulting in these runners having to take evasive action. Stewards advised N. Evans that he would be expected to be sufficiently clear when shifting ground and that he was advised to exercise more care when slackening the pace in similar circumstances.
Approaching the 200 metre mark ROGER’S GOLD was tightened when MEGA JET attempted a run to the inside of ABBA JET.

SWABBING: All winners and a number of random samples were sent to be swabbed and those obtained sent to the Racing Science Centre for routine analysis.
BOOKMAKERS: 2 Bookmakers fielded at the meeting.
