STEWARDS REPORT – TUESDAY 11th FEBRUARY 2003
STEWARDS PANEL: P Cooper (Chairman), G Hargraves, G Meek, N Fox, N Vagg, C Harris (Cadet)
WEATHER – Fine TRACK – Race 1 Slow; Races 2-8 - Dead
RAIL – Short Course out 2m from 1300 – 800m; Out 4m from 800 – 400m; True Elsewhere. Long Course – Out 3m from 700 – 400m. Cutaway 400m.
RACE 1: RACE 1 2YO H'CAP – ABT 1100 METRES (7 STARTERS)
FLEET STREET (J Stephens) was slow into stride as the start was effected.
ARCHER BOY (P Crich) raced ungenerously from the 800 metres to the 400 metre mark.
OFF WITH THE STARS (App H Watanabe) laid outwards at approximately the 300 metre mark.
RACE 2: MAIDEN H'CAP – ABT 1000 METRES (11 STARTERS)
Apprentice Darryl Johnston reported to the Stewards that his horse VERTARA over-raced and got onto heels at approximately the 600 metre mark resulting in the horse having to be restrained.
RACE 3: CLASS 4 H'CAP - ABT 1000 METRES (8 STARTERS)
BLANCHEFLEUR (G Evans) was slow into stride as the start was effected.
It was noted that Neil Jolly the rider of GRANDE SEQUALO accidentally dropped his whip at the 100 metre mark.
RACE 4: OPEN H'CAP – ABT 1000 METRES (7 STARTERS)
DARING MISS (M Unwin) laid out over the concluding stages of the race and caused minor inconvenience to SILVER SWITCH (C Beets).
RACE 5: CLASS 3 H'CAP – ABT 1800 METRES (11 STARTERS)
Jockey C Beets was the replacement rider for TOUCHE TURTLE when the declared rider T Kruger failed to arrive onto course due to mechanical problems.
At approximately the 800 metre mark SHEBEAT (N Jolly) had to be restrained when tightened to the inside of GNAEUS POMPEIUS (NZ) (M Barnham) and VINDICATION (S Quick). Stewards advised both jockeys Barnham and Quick to show more care in the future.
RACE 6: CLASS 1 H'CAP – ABT 1200 METRES (9 STARTERS)
NEWSFRONT (App L Timson) hung out from the 800 metres to the 600 metres.
BOURBONNAIS (App D Johnston) returned to the enclosure with the presence of blood in the offside nostril only.
RACE 7: 3YO CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200 METRES (13 STARTERS)
SARANAL (C Beets) bucked shortly after the start. Trainer Clem Jackson was advised that the horse was again barred from racing until such time as it can successfully pass a barrier trial.
Stewards questioned Jockey N Jolly as to an explanation for the performance of MRS DENVER. Jockey Jolly informed the Stewards that the horse over-raced early and refused to settle and upon straightening raced extremely uncompetitively and tailed off. Stewards accepted the explanation of Jockey Jolly.
RACE 8: CLASS 6 H'CAP – ABT 1200 METRES (9 STARTERS)
Stewards delayed the declaration of Correct Weight whilst they perused the patrol footage as to the reason STOPWATCH (M Barnham) was slow away from the barriers. After viewing the patrol footage it was established that as the start was effected STOPWATCH had reared in the barriers and lost considerable ground.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
BOOKMAKERS: Five bookmakers fielded at the race meeting.
