STEWARDS REPORT – Friday 23rd, May 2003


STEWARDS PANEL: P Cooper (Chairman), G Meek, R Doyle, N Vagg, C Harris (Cadet)


WEATHER – Fine TRACK – Good
RAIL – Short Course – out 3m from 800-400 metres and 4m elsewhere.
Long Course – out 3m from 700m to the winning post.


General Report:
Trainer D O’Leary was fined the sum of $50 in that he nominated CONJUROR in an event in which it was ineligible.


RACE 1: CLASS 6 H’CAP -1200 METRES (7 STARTERS)
As Apprentice L Timson was indisposed Stewards permitted Apprentice T Mathieson to be the replacement rider for BALMY BAR.
As the start was affected PICNIC POINT (M Evans) jumped outwards and POOCHA (App L Fitzsimmons) jumped inwards which resulted in a general tightening to STEFAMA (A Lane),
TRUSCAN (M Unwin) and BALMY BAR (App T Mathieson).
Jockey M Lehmann rider of PROMISING JOY was advised to show more care in the future after permitting his mount to shift inwards at the 250 metre mark which resulted in POOCHA (App L Fitzsimmons) being taken inwards and hamper the running of PICNIC POINT (M Evans).


RACE 2: 2 YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200 METRES (13 STARTERS)
BLUE JAM (M Barnham) was slow into stride as the start was affected.
DABBLIN LANE (M Bennett) through its head in the air and raced ungenerously at approximately the 800 metres when attempting to be settled.
BLUE JAM (M Barnham) raced uncompetitively throughout the event.
SMEE (G Booth) was steadied from the heels of KON TIKI ROSE (S Quick) at approximately the 800 metre mark.
LET’S KANOODLE (A Lane) laid in under hard riding for the final 200 metres of the event.


RACE 3: MIADEN H'CAP - 1000 METRES (11 STARTERS)
Stewards permitted App H Watanabe to be the replacement rider of PEPPERINA LANE replacing apprentice L Timson.
As Jockey M Goodwin failed to arrive on course Stewards permitted Jockey M Bennett to be the replacement rider for FAR TOO BUSY. Stewards intend to question Jockey M Goodwin as to his reason for failing to fulfil his engagement.
When being paraded in the saddling enclosure the bridle came off COVER BAY (App L Fitzsimmons) this resulted in the field being late onto the course which further resulted in the starting time of the event being delayed.
As the start was affected PEPPERINA LANE (App H Watanabe) jumped away awkwardly.
HIGH TOWER (M Barnham) bled from both nostrils during the running of the event. This was confirmed by the clubs veterinary surgeon. The trainer R Wilson was advised the horse is now under a mandatory ban from racing for a period of 3 calendar months.


RACE 4: CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1100 METRES (STARTERS)
App K Cunningham was a replacement rider for ARADELL replacing App L Timson.
As the start was affected VARPECK (D Whitmore) jumped inwards.
Stewards advised Jockey A Pattillo to show more care after allowing his mount CRAIGLEA HELLE to shift inwards as approximately the 700 metre mark which resulted in VERTARA (App D Johnston) clipping heels and losing its positon.
Stewards also severely admonished App D Johnston with regards to the quality of evidence he gave in relation to this incident.

RACE 5: CLASS 3 H'CAP – 1100 METRES (12 STARTERS)
It was established that an error in the prize money was advertised in the race book. The necessary announcements where made to correct the error.
DANCING LIMO was a late scratching at 3:46pm by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight Stewards ordered that deductions be made at a rate of 10 cents in the dollar for the win portion of the bet and 10 cents in the dollar for the place portion of the bet.
MILLERS GUIDE (M Bennett) was fractious in the barriers prior to the start being affected.
At approximately the 900 metre mark ACE CLUB (App L Fitzsimmons) got its head in the air and shied away from LUCIFER’S DOUBLE (S Quick) which resulted in MAPPERLEY MAGIC (C Beets) being taken inwards which further resulted in HULA REBEL (M Evans) being checked and losing it position in the field. Stewards took no further action.

RACE 6: CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1300 METRES (14 STARTERS).
As Jockey C Schumacher was indisposed Stewards permitted A Lane to be the replacement rider on TYCOON TED.
Stewards permitted App K Cunningham to be the replacement rider of WITH INTENT replacing App L Timson.
At approximately the 1200 metre mark WITH INTENT (App K Cunningham) and CHINA CLASSIC (S Watkin) made heavy contact.
At approximately the 100 metre mark WESTERN DOWNS (M Evans) shifted outwards abruptly under pressure and made contact with SAILING DAN (App H Watanabe).

RACE 7: OPEN H'CAP – 1200 METRES (15 STARTERS)
App T Mathieson was a replacement rider for KENDEL WAY replacing App L Timson.
Jockey S Watkin was a replacement rider for JAZZAD replacing C Schumacher.
YALLAH’S POLONAISE (M Barnham) jumped away awkwardly.
ZOE’S LAD (A Lane) raced awkwardly into the first turn out of the back straight.

RACE 8: CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1600 METRES (12 STARTERS)
App D Johnston was the replacement rider for ALLIE BOB replacing App L Timson.
No incidents in running.


ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.

BOOKMAKERS: Four (4) bookmakers fielded at the race meeting.
